FReeper names explained
My curiousity | Now | Yours truly

Posted on 01/18/2002 5:03:35 PM PST by Come get it

Some FReepers have nicks that are obvious in their origin, others don't. I've seen several that probably have interesting stories behind them.

I thought it would be cool to see where FReepers get their handles from. If you don't like this topic, DON'T POST HERE! No one forces you to read this. I'm sure other people may be interested. If I'm the only one, let me know so I can crawl away in shame.

Alright, I'll correct that. MINE IS...

You need to give those from CA a break...we are so over taxed and in need of leadership.

Doh! I thought you were an "easy" girl.

Wrong thought, especially since I'm packin' another type of "big gun", if you get my drift.

If my ferrets could reach the keyboard, they'd be FReepers, too. But since they can't, I thought I would honor them with my screen-name.

Basil and Pixie

A strong woman with strong opinions from our early days. She felt that women should enjoy equality in marriage and be able to vote.

My granddad traced our family lineage back to R. E. Lee (my last name's Lee). I'm not sure what relation, but it's there.

Philip Freneau was the editor of the National Gazette, a newspaper owned by James Madison and Thomas Jefferson. He was also known as the "Poet of the Revolution". I chose his name because of some of the insightful editorials he wrote. The most famous, and my favorite, is titled, Rules for changing a limited republican government into an unlimited hereditary one.

I use the first two initials and my real last name,...no fair issuing forth opinions and not admitting who I am...how can one be truly judged authentic otherwise. I do understand the need for some to be cautious, as they may have jobs or reputations in hostile Liberal territory that need protecting. Voting is the one thing that really counts any-way!
Cheers, Mike Mathis

One of the lily-livered liberal latte-sippers I work with dubbed me Hawkboy because of my support for Bush and the war in Iraq. I decided I'd wear it as a badge of pride here on FR. Also, I enjoy birdwatching, particularly raptors, so it fits in that respect as well...

Now that someone's dredged this thread up again:

I'll try to make the actual story of the screen name short: when I first got on the Internet in 1998, I used to sign on in places as Arglebargle IV. In Harvard Lampoon's satire of Tolkien called Bored of the Rings, this was in a footnote early on about a king: "Either Arglebargle IV or somebody else". I'd read the book in 1970 but always remembered this, so I used it as a screen name. But everyone and their sisters asked for explanations, which I very quickly got tired of giving, so I shortened it to Argh.

Miss Hair, Ruthie, just in case I never told you this before.

It was stupid of me to use my real name. Oh, well . . .

It would probably surprise you to know I have never read "Bored of the Rings" though I know a lot of Tolkien fans who thought it was hilarious and recommended it. I just have never seen a copy when I was shopping around!

Maybe someday Jim will grant us all an amnesty so we can change screen names.

I have dibs on "Burpo the Mad Clown," the name I wish I had signed up with.

I agree... this should be an interesting thread, so ping to some cyber-friends!

my name is pretty obvious. However on other message boards, I go by "spirit tracker," because I've been studying Tom Brown's method of animal tracking, which involves learning about Native American spirituality.

Tom has taught Navy Seals, by the way. :)

Mine came about during the PC commericals that decided we were all hyphenated Americans, I.E. arab-American ETC. Just my way of telling the PC crowd there are only Americans, nothing more, nothing less...
