FReepers I Need to Pic Your Brains - Help!
me

I know I have not been on for awhile. Many of you have written to me and asked what is going on. After Jarbidge in July 2000 I moved up to Idaho to be closer to my daughter. As many of you know I am disabled. Since I moved here I have been having a major nightmare with doctors. Without boring you with details, I am ready to quit the whole lot of them. But I have a ball and chain around my neck, social security disability, and long term disability from my employer. I am not looking for sympathy or instant cures with herbal medicine, but I am a good conservative and I want to remove this ball and chain! I also am not looking for charity or people to feel sorry for me!
This is where I am asking for help. I need a way or means to support myself from which I can do on my computer from home. It needs to be something that does not require a lot of reading. I have my computer set up at my bedside. Then I can quit the doctor thing, and just go once a year or so to my doctor in Reno for my meds.
This is a brief synopsis of my working history.
- Secretary for 3 years
- CNA-for 1 year while in school
- RN &/or Charge Nurse for 19 years (Primarily Pediatrics, but also Adults and L&D)
- Started & Ran a Maternity Home for Pregnant minors while a nurse
have gotten 501C3 status for the maternity home and another organization - Authored Mattys Heart a Childs and Parents Guide to Open Heart Surgery (I donated these books to Kids with Heart many years ago and do not receive anything for them.)
I have been disabled since 1996 with Myasthenia Gravis and Adult Onset Stills Disease.
I must also say I am a very conservative Christian so anything I do has to be in line with my Christian Values and Love of my Lord.
I need approximately $1500 a month to support myself: medications, utilities, house payment/rent etc (does not include medical insurance which I will loose my Medicare). That is the trade off. But I do not know what else to do. I need a business that can generate that kind of money and is not physically taxing. Oh yeah, I am 54 years old. Been disabled since I was 48. Was in the middle of starting the Medical Storybook business when I became ill and lost it all, infact still paying off some of it. I believe in honoring my debts, so I did not file for bankruptcy.
Well it seems like an impossible task to me How about you guys, any ideas to help me get off the taxpayers dime.

With your medical background, maybe you could offer medical transcription or billing/insurance filing services to local physicians? I am unsure how much reading these would require. I'll second this - medical (or even legal) transcription is one of few jobs you can do entirely from home. There are some logistical issues (e.g., how to get the voice recording to you) to overcome, but those can be worked out. Doing this requires little if any reading.

Ask and ye shall receive!
The Right Links has a number of conservative links to various organizations -->Right Links The specific organization is
Frontiers of Freedom Institute 12011 Lee Jackson Memorial Highway 3rd Floor Fairfax, Virginia 22033 (703) 246-0110 (703) 246-0129 (fax) info@ff.orgWallop is a retired Senator and probably maintains an office in Cheyenne. I think his wife runs a western oriented art gallery there. Good Luck.

Hi Jean, I see that you've received some good suggestions.
Decide what you want to do and stay committed to it.
Stay in communication with people that have a positive attitude and that support your commitments.

Call a conservative talk show host and tell him of your situation. Explain that, as a conservative, you don't want a government handout. You want to work. Tell them of your skills. Perhaps the host will have the screener take your number off the air and some local businesses might call in with an offer.

http://www.disabled2work.com/ I noticed medical transcriptionist, internet research among others. Good luck.

How about writing childrens' books? A series of Christian childrens' books with good, biblically-based morals? Something along the lines of Aesop's Fables? (Just tossing... you catch what works!) :-)

You could check out a virtual assistant career. It's like temp work, but all online. I joined
staffcentrix a few years ago (when it was free.)They basically work as an agency and send out RFPs based on your experience. I still get proposals from them, but am too busy to worry about them. Be careful--many VA "agencies" are scams. I think staffcentrix is on the level, but I have never pursued the field.
I know there are a lot of jobs for medical writing. Have you ever considered technical writing or editing? With your experience as an RN, you could probably get some work editing those boring medical tomes. :)
Check out DICE and also check out the local STC. I know Idaho has an active chapter and even if you just call a few people, you may get some pointers on local opportunities.
Medical transcription is supposed to be a very good job for telecommuting and another where your experience would help.
God bless youyou are an inspiration to us all.

Also (I have no idea if your condition permits this sort of thing) there's crafts and sewing. Afghans or quilts in deep colors with a fancy gold cross in the middle would be nice. The darker the colors, the more expensive. (I've never seen such a thing, but they're in my fantasies!)

If all else fails, Wal-mart has an excellent record of hiring disabled people. I went there today and saw a quadaplegic worker. She was a greeter, and she was also working on some sort of special computer set on her lap with a stick on her mouth.

thanks in advance...

I wish I could help, but seems like children's books or another book using your background would be your best bet. Best of luck with your endeavors. I'll be keeping an eye out for a progress report, could always use some money myself :-)

I would encourage you to go for the lobbyist idea, since you have a passion for that. It's going to make a real difference if you love what you're doing. Maybe there are other Freepers who could help you get into a paying position.
Failing that, as much as I personally dislike hearing from telemarketers, I'd say look at telemarketing.
The key here is you want something doable which will generate immediate income at the level you need to make a living. You don't want to wait 6 months for a MAYBE (like a book).
If you do, and it doesn't pan out (for example, no publisher can be found, which is not at all unlikely), you'll be in a lot deeper financially than you want to be. Avoid that situation if at all possible. The way to avoid it is to get a job now which will allow you to make ends meet, reliably and immediately.
If you want to and have the energy to work part time on a book later, go for it. But don't go in any deeper. That's my advice.
