McCain should apologize for use of the word "volunteer", as there is nothing of the sort going on in the AmeriCorps program. Volunteers give freely of their own time, and DO NOT receive money for their good works. AmeriCorps is nothing but another federal jobs program, and it is insulting to real volunteers to have these paid workers referred to as volunteers.
Geez, talk about Orwellian twisting of the language.

My children volunteer voluntarily already - will they be required to volunteer involuntarily also?

Those "think tank consultant type pukes " are the ones who are shaping tomorrows laws.

The schools in San Diego attempted compulsory "volunteer" service from the high school students as a requirement for graduation. My son ripped them a new a$$hole in a fairly scathing letter to the editor of the San Diego Union. He cited chapter and verse why it was illegal. The letter sparked serious discussion among members of the faculty and administration at the high school and school district. The requirement was dropped.

Please extend my thanks and admiration to your son, and to yourself for raising such a fine young man.
He is to be commended for such a fine accomplishment.

Good for him! Could you post it here, maybe?

It's amazing the power the politicians think they have to make life decisions for the populous. I guess that's why they call it a slippery slope.

I have personal experience as I had a relative in AmerCorps training, even the name is socialist sounding. What's your gripe with the name. It was tested in front of focus groups and came a full 2% above the second place pick, The Clinton Jungen.

Glad you said it, 'forced volunteering' is just another way of saying slavery.

Yah Right! This whole concept is totally insane.

We have enough professionals right now we do not need conscription.

Some state representative tried to require that you have to do x amount of hours of community service to graduate college. That proposal was not well recieved on campuses. I do plenty of volunteer work for my student organizations, and I do not need someone else to tell me that I have to do more.

McCain's been gettin' into the stash again. Somebody bust his bong, will ya??

"Cool your jets folks. Both Bayh and McCain offices point out that they DID NOT say mandatory. Fox News found some think-tank consultant puke who said it might be maybe kinda' sorta' something to consider, maybe, sometime."OK, so let's summarize:
"An incredibly stupid, expensive, wholly wasteful, un-Constitutional, politically-correct, mandatory welfare-program-in-drag..."
OR
"An incredibly stupid, expensive, wholly wasteful, un-Constitutional, politically-correct, voluntary welfare-program-in-drag..."
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....................nope. Little difference to these eyes.

We have enough professionals right now we do not need conscription. We do? So, how come the border is considered porous, and illegal immigration still occurs?
To: Frohickey
Because they don't put the military on the border like they should.

If something is made compulsory , then how can it still be called voluntary?..
