This morning on Fox News there was a report of a middle eastern man being noticed by an off duty policeman photographing a Diamond Shamrock oil refinery in Texas. The man was apprehended by law enforcement. When questioned, he did not come up with any logical explanation for his photographing the refinery. The Fox video report showed the man in custody. The report also showed his late model car which was found to contain only maps of undisclosed locations.
Yeah, there is. Sept 11th is one part of the story. There is the war against terrorism. There is the fact that there are sleeper cells in the US. There is the strong possibility of future attacks on American soil. There is the fact that we are at war with Islamic Terrorists, the man is MidEastern, and a refinery would make a good target.
I always take pictures of oil refineries, nuclear power plants and tall buildings when I'm on vacation....Don't you???...?
Well, Duh...
We like to measure the distances, and the angles, between ground level support pillars on any 'New International' style buildings that we see, too.
My son wants one of those devices that gives a quick field test of the PSI strength of concrete for his birthday.
I told him, "We'll see..."
< sarcasm>They package one with the Improvised Munitions and Incendiary Manuals that Bin Laden is distributing. Might save you some money if you buy the package deal!< /sarcasm>
IMHO activity near the Bush ranch near Waco should be also monitored since terrorists probably would consider that area a target too.
I totally agree with you. I have to laugh at stupid criminals who commit crimes in Texas. They must have a death wish or something. Texans don't take crap from anyone. We don't put up with this kind of garbage. He is toast.
Now watch them let him go because they have nothing to charge him with. Who honestly drives around with maps of undisclosed locations in their car, taking pictures of refineries? I'm a scrapbooker and a shutter bug. I have a gazillion pictures and not one picture of an oil refinery in my home state. If he is innocent then they should let him go of course, but this is very suspicious. If you come to my state and act stupid or suspicious, we dont care what color you are. Black, brown, white, yellow, purple or green, you dont pictures of oil refineries when we at war, for your fond remembrances of our fine state. If pictures of refineries mean that much to you, go to the 7/11 and buy some nice post cards.
Gee, I certanly hope it was a case where profiling came into play. It isn't illegal to photograph a refinery but what could be so interesting about an oil refinery to a Middle-Easterner that he'd want to photograph it ? It isn't like he hasn't seen them before, is it ? It sounds like something akin to a Norwegian suddenly feeling compelled to photograph a herring.
The economic effect of striking our refineries would last for years. Osama has directed them to strike at the US economy. I canot think of a better way.
Oops, I guess this makes me a racial profiler of some such sort. So solly.
I bet we didn't allow the Nazis to take pictures of our refineries during our war with them. Obviously this guy is a foreign spy and should be treated as such.
You and the movie Airplane! (or perhaps one of its sequels) where an Asian man is standing there with a dozen cameras around his neck, hangs another one on and proceeds to tip over. Quite funny.
I asked my beloved and it was suggested that the Diamond Shamrock Sign might have been perdy and the fellow either collects signs or pictures of industrial site signage.
I read before that's also part of their plans. I'm sure they think we'd be even more impressed with a coordinated attack on the pipeline with a lot of our refineries. Just like the many hijackings planned Sept 11.
At this early stage, no one can know what his affiliations are. Detaining someone requires a charge, so what would it be? Just acting suspicious isn't enough. Perhaps he's another visa overstayer, which would be good enough. Whatever else, he must be pretty witless to call attention to himself this way.
