This morning on Fox News there was a report of a middle eastern man being noticed by an off duty policeman photographing a Diamond Shamrock oil refinery in Texas. The man was apprehended by law enforcement. When questioned, he did not come up with any logical explanation for his photographing the refinery. The Fox video report showed the man in custody. The report also showed his late model car which was found to contain only maps of undisclosed locations.

If press attention is any indicator, and there is good reason to argue that it is not, then it would seem that the sleepers are beginning to stir. Sleepers, as in al Qaeda sleeper agents. Or perhaps middle eastern males find oil refinery equipment captivating in the same sense that western males find the female form captivating. Who bloody knows?

It's not illegal to photograph a refinery, is it? Or is there something else about the situation that made it suspicious?
There's more to this story.

What do you make of this? I don't know. I often burn up a roll or two of film at industrial sites, doesn't everyone? You know, for the beauty of it. He was probably on a sight seeing tour of refineries and chemical plants. Contact your travel agent.

No, it is not illegal for a person to photograph a refinery. However, if the man is an enemy agent he is commiting espionage, and if we are at war, there are serious consequences.
How we deal with this situation says a lot about how serious we are about fighting terrorism in this country. Must we wait for another Sept. 11 type incident to react, or can we be proactive?

You know the more I think about this it may be a little suspicious. At least as suspicious as the little old white ladies they are frisking at the airport to make sure they are not terrorists. What do you think?

I didn't hear the Fox report, but this morning's local news (from OKC) mentioned several (as in, more than just one) such sightings at refineries and power plants in Texas. Sounds like maybe finally someone is taking this stuff seriously.

Surely you jest. The possible "casing" of new terrorist targets is hardly insignificant.

These people are rubbing our noses in our own stupidity. Damn the griping about profiling. We should have started the round-up at 9:15 AM on 9/11. The American people will not be so supportive if we let another attack happen because we were afraid of the PC police. If you can not prove citizenship or have an expired visa, you must go!! It's just a matter of time before we get spanked again.

Just this morning on our way to church we saw two Asians taking each others picture in front of their motel. My 11 yr.old son asked why would they do that, it's just a door and window that will be in the picture, and 20 yards behind them is the Atlantic Ocean. It's funny what people will take pictures of...but in this case, where he is Mid Eastern, and taking picures of a refinery are too suspicious. I have to think there's more to it too.

If any of my civil liberties have to be given up in the name of security, let it by my right to photograph refineries and power plants without a good reason.
