gonzo, look here:
http://www.fuckmicrosoft.com/content/ms-hidden-files.shtml#4
Be careful with this-- it's a drop to DOS routine that wipes ALL the hidden stuff!
Before trying that, suggest you edit out as many cookies as you can.... you want to keep the ones you know, like for FR, and get rid of most everything else.

Click here and get and install
Pop-up Stopper. Works very well and can be turned on or off from your tray. Using it currently with Win98SE. I like it as it kills all those pesky pop-ups.

Good Morning Gonzo, I think you have to turn off a few things at your security settings to stop those popups. Not sure what but someone on here knows for sure.
Freegards to you and Hope you have a Happy New Year!

This happened to a friend of mine in an adjoining cubicle two days ago. He was trying to look at his hotmail account when he opened something that then opened about 6 different windows of porn, but with no stripe at the top of each window to close them. I had him press control, alt, delete and manually shut down each internet explorer window on the list. Then he could restart his browser without further problem. How to prevent it from happening in the first place, I'm not sure. Zone Alarm advertizes a product (separate from their firewall) that, they claim, will block pop-up ads, and there are other supposed cures available on the net if you do a search for them, but I haven't tried any of them personally. Good luck.

Alas, this is a feature of the Net. Go to any seemingly innocent site and you are about five clicks away from spam city.
If you are on AOL you can block but you sometimes block out your friends in the process. AOL is the worst. And they are really unhelpful when you try to contact them.

All your popups are belong to us!
Valium helps!

You may have downloaded 3rd party spyware. Go to Cnet.com and download Ad-Aware.
It's a great program that finds all third party files that are attached to programs unknowingly to you.
You'll be amazed how many of these files you have.

LOL. I was getting you an answer. I don't have the link to stop the pop-up ads but Cagey does. At any rate, I see someone else already gave it to you.
Happy New Year, gonzo, and choose your porn sites more carefully.

Click on start -> run -> type msconfig -> hit enter -> put a dot next to Selective startup -> take out all of the check marks except for the ones next to Process System.ini file and Process Win.ini file. Be sure to clear even the checks that may look dim. This can only be done in windows 98. Click apply, click okay, they click yes to restart. If this does not fix the problem, then you have a registry problem (most likely) and will need to call Norton because the virus will have saved itself under several different names in your registry. They will have to find out the file names and walk you through erasing them.

You also can get
VizualZone Report (freeware) and backtrace the spam and get more info on it.
Also you can install a hostfile who can block out certain known IP-adresses that spam people.

Look at www.shareware.com and find search for "pop-up stopper" or some sort of phrase. There are several out there. Also, I believe the Opera browser lets you turn them off.
If you use Explorer, take advantage of the security zones in your internet options. You have three security zones interesting to you: Internet, trusted sites, and restricted sites. You can set various security options for each of these. I set my Internet to not taking cookies, but allowing some JavaScript, etc. I set trusted sites to allow almost anything, and restricted sites to allow absolutely nothing. Put your online banking, probably Freep because it needs cookies, etc., into trusted sites, and put known pop-up generators into restricted sites.
Don't forget, in those Internet Options, you can also delete your cookies, temporary files and browsing history. NAV and ZoneAlarm have nothing to do with any of this.
Netscape 6 has some good stuff too, especially the ability to individually delete cookies and allow no more from those specific sites.

The crappy part is that the sites you are spammed, aren't even the smut sites worth looking at.
Rule #1: Never pay for porn on the net. Everything is already out there for free (if you know where to look!)

I agree. Pop-up Stopper is a really useful little program that works great. I use it with Windows ME with no problems.
Plus, the price is right!
