Just did a study of Israeli-Palestinian conflict
Rant

Posted on 12/06/2001 12:29:07 PM PST by robjna

Forgive me if I have things wrong and please correct me if my personal research has led me astray. Let me also preface this post by stating that Palestinian lunatics like Hamas need to be destroyed.

With that said, my research has led me to belive that the palestinians have been screwed throughout history. Israel, by force has seized so much land and then infringed even further into palestinian land. They ignored the U.N. recommondations and siezed vast amounts of land from Palestine. Israelis were the minority and by force , displaced weaker, huge masses of Palestinians. I have spent most of my life hating the PLO and blaming them for the huge Middle-east problem. now I beleive the Iraels are also to blame. I never really understood the issue and decided to find out. I strongly believe there needs to be distinct boundries that must be respected by both sides. I was surprised to see how many Israeli settlements were in Palestinian areas. I guess I figured out there is two sides to every story. Come on fellow freepers, educate me and tell me your beliefs.

Read Moshe Dayan's memoirs before you believe that the Egyptians started the 6 day war.

What was this? A two-hour study?
Two days? What?

If you expect to get a grasp of the issue like a 10 second sound bite, you might as well give up.

It's tough, Robjna, but you're right. I was once a no-holds barred Israeli supported. Until I lived in Jerusalem for 3 years and saw the situation for what it really is. I still ardently support Israel's right to exist, but the fact is that the Palestinians have suffered to an extent that the vast majority of Americans would never tolerate if they really were exposed to both sides of the story.

What scares me is -- IMHO and after doing a ton of studying -- sometimes it really does look like Congress puts Israel's interest before the interests of Americans. Two weeks ago, Ha'aretz wrote that Israel deposited $1 million in a bank account for Jonathan Pollard. Also, there seems to be little question that Israel sold our technology to the Chinese, which we nicely asked them not to do (not to mention our laws which prohibit it). For a good, well-balanced view, read Thomas Friedman's "From Beruit to Jerusalem."

If you want, e-mail me and I will send you some links to some very interesting newspaper stories from mainstream sources.

What is "right" in the case if Israel/Palestine is extremely subjective and, in my opinion, far more complex and extensive an issue than most commentary I've seen on it seems to recognize (including my own, btw).

One thing seems pretty much beyond dispute: the notion of "Peace in the Middle East" is an unlikely one at best. The place has been a hotbed of trouble for millenia, and the trend doesn't exactly seem to be leaning toward a more peaceful future.

More likely we'll see another high-intensity war followed by Israeli territorial gains and more Arab outrage -- again, if the more recent historical patterns continue.

Who's right in my opinion? I think both sides have legitimate grudges, but my personal opinion is that Israel has a right to exist and that the people thereof will enforce that right by any means necessary. Attempts to destroy Israel are extremely unlikely to succeed, but guaranteed to result in a lot of death, pain and suffering, and all for nothing.

The only peace in Israel will come from the muzzle of a gun, and it doesn't look good for Israel's enemies -- whether they're "right" or "wrong".

It sounds like you researched this by going to propeganda sites. I cannot say that the Palestinians have no complaints, certainly they have some that are legitimate -- but the fact remains that they screwed themselves a long time ago, and their children and grandchildren are paying the price today. The vast majority of them displaced themselves during the war, fearful that they would get hurt, and hoping that the Jews would be defeated by the Arab armies and that they could return.

Do yourself a favor and look up the following:

Hebron Massacre of 1929

Jerusalem Riots of 1936.

Hajj Al-Housseini + Hitler.

When you are done report back here and see if your perspective has changed slightly. I think you will start to see that the Jews living in the British mandate had no choice but to demand their independence. I will have plenty more things for you to research so that you can have a well rounded and highly informed opinion.

If they are mainstream sources, please post them here for everyone to see. No need to be secretive about them unless they are from hate sites, in which case they are probably not welcomed by the management (or decent people in general).

The mere fact that you have tried to learn anything about the conflict will have you branded as an anti-semite.

IT IS NOT OK to study history, try find out the facts or ask questions.

Palestinians have been screwed alright, by their own stupidity. Like maniacs, now that they have started, they can't go back and stop. Palestine is in Jordan by the way, so the rant on Israel is irrelevant.

Israel, and her supporters here, refuse to recognize the Palestinians as a people.

There are extremists on all sides. But the central problem with the middle east is there is not a single arab democratic government in the area, no arab government that has a constitutional guarantee of freedom of speech or religion, no viable movement in the region for any of these basic human rights.

I do not see any Jews calling for the extermination of Muslims in Israel or in the occupied territories. I do not see Israel deliberately bombing public places occupied by civilians, certainly not as a matter of policy.

As for Israeli soldiers shooting at rock throwing kids -- about which I don't know all the facts -- I would say this: If one kid throws a rock at a soldier and gets shot, that's a tragedy. If a second kid throws a rock, that's Darwin at work. If the parents of these kids have no more concept of morality than to launch their kids at soldiers, they are eternally doomed.

My suggestion. Read the old testament of the Bible. It is the most historically accurate record of Israel there is. Its obvious God gave the land to Abraham and his decendants.

With that said, is modern Israel filled with Abraham's decendants. I don't know because when Christ died for our sins, Israel became a spirtual condition, not a natural order. Galatians 3:28-29 "There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

Since Islam is a religion that is very hostile toward Christianity, and Israel welcomes Christians and sees them as friends and allies, I tend to believe the right people currently occupy the "promised land".

Actually apologies for the response.
In my opinion there are a lot of Arab/Islam apologists posting already here on FR often presenting themselves as unbiased Americans. I suspected you might be one such person based on your standard of English and the fact that you said you had done a study (and therefore presumably were well informed) yet you didn't specify much information regarding what caused you to be sympathetic to the Palestinians.

To be honest there is a lot of material to be studied before you can get a clear picture of the conflict and its causes.
I would try getting information from various different sources before forming an opinion. Having said that, usually people who have an "opinion" regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict, no matter how well versed they are in history, usually end up taking one side or the other anyway.

And your studies taught or informed you of when the Palestinian's came into being?

Afarat is really an Egyptian Officer, or is that a former Egyptian Officer....

Where and how did the Koran come into being and what is the basis upon which it was written?

Something about the late 1880s; something in early 1900s; and then the big promise at the end of WWII? That first the English in 46-47 supported Israel, then the French until 1967, and then in '67 after Israel bombed a US Naval ship with great loss of American Servicemen - the US again bailed out the French... And then the French kicked US forces and NATO from French Terroritory over the Israeli change of allegience.

That the Arab's collectively are hatefull of Jews and Christians; and that they teach this hatred to their children within the numerous school systems?

And finally, after the Jews/Israeli's fended off several wars initiated by the Arabs, and started one of their own, they have too much land....?

Did anyone ever teach you that you must hold some terroritory to protect yourselve in case of attack - but then today with digital warfare the boundaries are erroding.

My only real question of you is whether or not you beleive that a group of perople whould be allowed to exist in peace with the Arabs when they are hell bent upon their destruction?

Palestinians didn't accept the land given to them by UN charter in 1948. Arabs attacked, Israel won. Arabs attacked again and again. So, how should this work? If I attack and win, I destroy you. If I attack and lose, I get a do over? Israel should remain within the same borders and give the Arabs chance after chance to defeat them? I don't think so. Palestinians have been screwed, over and over, by their own leaders. Suicide bombers continue to kill Israelis, but when Israel closes its borders it's not fair because the Palestinians can't work.

Israel and the PA can't negotiate a settlement if the Israeli's are dickering over how many square mile to turn over but the Palestinians are trying to decide whether to kill all the Jews or maybe let a few live.

"With that said, is modern Israel filled with Abraham's decendants."

It certainly is.. Of course you know that Abraham had lots of sons by Hagar as well as his wife Keturah and he circumcised all of them.
