P.C. Town Bans Santa Claus

P.C. Town Bans Santa Claus

Is something strange in the water in Montgomery County, Md.? This enclave of leftist thought police is notorious for censoring Indian nicknames of sports teams and trying to criminalize smoking in private homes. Now one of its towns has banned Santa Claus.

Kensington Mayor Lynn Raufaste says that a mere two families "felt that they would be uncomfortable" with Santa being part of the annual Christmas tree lighting. So the town council gave St. Nick the heave-ho-ho-ho.

These two families, who don't celebrate Christmas, say they feel excluded because - duh - Santa is synonymous with the holiday.

In years past, Santa would arrive on a fire truck and light the tree with the mayor. But on Sunday, the mayor will light the tree herself, something she calls "a shame," WJLA-TV reported today.

How come kooky, out-of-touch bureaucrats and politicians have no consideration for the majority who are "uncomfortable" with P.C. idiocy?

We know there are plenty of good, sensible people in Montgomery County, because some of them have written to us about the Berserkley-like nonsense going on there. It is time for the silent majority to contact their elected officials and roar.

An old Greek (or was it an old Roman) once said that nothing - NOTHING - withstands laughter.

Henceforth Kensington, Maryland, shall be known as Grinchtown, Maryland.

What was it about Santa Claus that was objectionable to the two Grinchtown families? Were they against the stereotype of the jolly obese? Were they humiliated by the red suit Santa wears with black boots? Or by Santa's white hair and long white beard? Or by his belly that shakes when he laughs like a bowl full of jelly? Or by laughter itself? Were they offended by the possibility of Santa "interacting" with their children and possibly (the horror) bring gifts to their children? Dare they admit that Santa Claus gained his jelly belly when Grinchtown proscribed smoking at home?

Who knows. Who knows.

Put up the signs on all roads leading to this one horsesenseless town: "Welcome to Grinchtown, Maryland - "All our Idiocy Is Belongs to Us."

Why would these families WANT to attend the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony????Exactly what part of "Christmas Tree" do these people not understand??? when i called there today,, it was pointed out to me that it is not called a 'CHRISTMAS TREE PARADE' but rather just a parade. they thought calling it a "christmas" parade was making to many people feel "uncomfotable" so they just call it A TREE LIGHTING PARADE - NOTICE NOWHERE IS CHRISTMAS TREE MENTIONED

I dare someone to play The Chipmunks Christmas Song when she lights the tree!

I would do it if I was there (or even close).

"Santa Claus" is an Anglicization of San Nicklaas, the Dutch name for St. Nicholas. It has nothing to do with Satan.

Where do you get "San Nicklaas" ?? It's "Sinter Klaas" I believe, unless 1520 google matches are wrong. A much closer match to "Santa Claus," you'll note.

Christine O'Keeffe's Saint Nicholas page

He's clearly the origin of our Santa Claus via the Dutch in New York.

"Couldn't step into a thread without Catholic bashing, could you? Gee, imagine the horridness of honoring people who propagated and nurtured the faith, some of whom frequently suffered torture and execution for it. And what, pray tell, have Swaggert, Falwell, Mohler, Bakker, Crouch, or your average Midwest/Southern evangelical suffered for it?" Bad Hair and Polyester suits......

Will There be a Santa Claus?
From the Editorial Page of FreeRepublic,
written by lowbridge, November 28, 2001

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of FreeRepublic:

"Dear Editor--I am 8 years old.
"Montgomery County community of Kensington and two families that live within the community say there wil be no Santa Claus.
"Papa says, 'If you see it in FreeRepublic, it's so.'
"Please tell me the truth, will there be a Santa Claus?
Virginia O'Hanlon
115 West Ninety-fifth Street

Virginia, Montgomery County community of Kensington is wrong. They have been affected by the fascism of a politically correct age. They do not feel comfortable except they offend. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All liberal minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's are little. In this great universe of ours liberals is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there will be a Santa Claus. He will exist as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the state of Maryland if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no child-like faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in state and commuinity standards of politially correct offenses. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not have a Santa Claus! They might as well not have wedding ceremonies! They might get government agents to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did arrest Santa Claus, what would that acomplish? A community board bans Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there will be no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men, nor town boards can ban. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? In Maryland, of course you did, but that's no reason to arrest them. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the voting machine and see what makes the chads inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the politically correct liberal democrats that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus in Maryland! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever in FreeRepublic and Maryland. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

The mayor was on the radio with Ron Smith (WBAL, Baltimore) today and she said most emphatically that it was not a Christmas tree - it's a Holiday Tree.

Methinks this particular "Holiday Tree" comes with many splinters.

A further humorous note on this. One David Brooks, resident of Montgomery County, Maryland, has written a long article which appears in the December 2001 issue of Atlantic Monthly, entitled "One Nation, Slightly Divisible". The article is characterized as "A report from 'red' and 'blue' America", and in it the author tries (and fails miserably in my opinion) to understand and determine the magnitude of the divide shown by the famous 2000 election map. As representative of "blue" America, he has chose his own Montgomery County; as representative of "red" he chose Franklin County in south-central Pennsylvania. I would think he might now be a little embarrassed by his "blue" home county.

Maryland sucks!

As a resident, I should know. Years-of-education per capita is very high here (at least in Montgomery County) ... which means common sense is lowest per capita. As a result, voters regularly elect mean-spirited, arrogant, condescending liberal politicians ... who have nothing better to do than think up ways to control the lives of law-abiding citizens.

We've got one liberal mayor trying to outlaw smoking anywhere in public.

We've got a liberal county council trying to outlaw smoking in your own home.

We've got another liberal mayor molesting children.

And now we've got a liberal mayor banning Santa Claus.

This place is insane. Montgomery County, Maryland is the Berkeley of the East Coast. DO NOT MOVE HERE. It sucks!

Ron told her that she should expect quite a few Santas to show up at the ceremony.

Ron ought to know that most liberals are innately myopic. I'm sure this dumbass liberal wench hasn't thought that far in advance. Offended by Santa? Guess what? The majority will NOT be tyrannized by the "feelings" of a minority. As a result, that minority will now get exactly the opposite of what they wanted - tons of Santas.

People who are productive, work. People who aren't, become politicians.

But... what about the CHILDREN?!?!?!?!?

Imagine the kids racing by the telly when this story hits the 6 o'clock news.

"Mommy? *sniff* Daddy? Why... w-w-why isn't Suh-S-Suh-Santa allowed in our town? anymore? *snuffle* What did we do?"
