Note how they are trying to slip witchcraft/paganism into the school curriculum in the same manner as they are trying to slip homosexula perversion in.

My daughter (2nd grade) chose to skip the Harry Potter reading at Halloween at her school. Maybe the school will let us have a Veggie Tales reading.

Parents who have been told that Christianity must be kept out of schools due to the “separation of church and state” are now trying to protect their children from classroom discussions about paganism and the occult.

While I don't buy the "Harry Potter is Satan" schtick, I think this is a legitimate gripe. No overtly Christian fiction stories in school, but overtly occult fiction stories are ok? You have to have it one way or the other.

Forget Harry Potter! We are about to have the entire country celebrate a pagan holiday! It's called Christmas. The last time I read the Bible, there was no Santa (Santa can be rearranged to spell Satan), Christmas Trees, North Pole, Flying Reindeer or Magic Toy Making Elves. Plus there is no real evidence that Jesus was born on Dec. 25th, 0000.

Yawn. These are the same clowns that were telling us the end of the world was upon us in the 1980s. It was the biblical math, don't you know. Something about 40 years (1945-1985) after Israel settled. Then there was that Hal Lindsay retard that had all the fundamentalist bible-thumpers believing the world would end during that decade ... or that Ronald Wilson Reagan was the anti-Christ because each part of his name had six letters (666). Then there was the anti-christ/occult existing in the corporate symbol of Proctor & Gamble. Etc. Etc. Etc. The people who dream up this stuff have very vivid imaginations. But, they're track record is horrific. Take your kid(s) to see Harry Potter ... and then sit back and laugh at the stupidity of the bible-thumpers.

It's because of nonsense like this that liberals can use a broad brush and label conservatives theocratic ignoramuses.

Anyone who would be seduced by Harry Potter into believing in black magic or any other kind of magic is a moron anyway. Here is the truth: Magic spells do not work. If you think magic spells work you are an idiot. If you are so influenced by a movie or book that you believe that magic is based in reality your an idiot who could probably be convinced to drink poison or jump off a bridge which would only increase the national average IQ scores in this country.

There are actually a few legitimate points in this article, unlike most Harry-bashing rants. Public schools should not be in the business of promoting either paganism or Christianity. Of course, the real problem is the very existence of public schools, which deprives parents of the right to choose how they wish their children to be educated.

I have read all of the Harry Potter books, and I think the criticism is ridiculous. It is obvious that most of the critics haven't personally read them. Yes, in the books Harry Potter is a "wizard", but he had to be BORN that way. A "muggle" (nonwizard) cannot aspire to wizardry, study the occult, and become a witch. Therefore, the books can't be considered how-to books on becoming a witch or wizard. According to the book (a fairy tale!!), you are born a muggle (human), a witch or wizard, a gnome, or all sorts of other mystical beings that DON'T REALLY EXIST.

I think I have had it with all this Harry Potter hype. I read an article on Drudge yesterday where J.K. Rowlings
was inferred to be another Shakespeare. Someone, please pass me a HUGE barf bag!

Show your child the Biblical passages condemning the casting of spells and contact with demons

Somebody show me a child who has contacted a real live demon using a Potter book, or any other book for that matter.

I am sorry, but these people are INSANE... this book is just that a book... a fair tale with an unlikely hero facing challenges.. nothing more nothing less... I've read it, unlike MOST here who condemn it, so I know from which I speak. I don't think its the greatest literary work of all time, but it is a pleasent little story. I personally fail to see why it is as big as it is, but I didn't get power rangers or Barney either.

This isn't heather has 2 mommies, or david has 2 daddies... its just a fictional story like thousands of others... All this hubub by a bunch of kooks over peganism or witchcraft etc... lot of hooey. Its a book... nothing more nothing less... I think these people who try to cast it as peganism brainwashing are the rights equivalents of the environmental kooks....

Hmm, well would I want my kid taught by someone that thinks that wizards and spells are just fantasy or one that believes in them? Think I'll pick the former.

Matrisciana says witchcraft is real, and she adds that elements of the books symbolize pagan deities. “J.K. Rowling majored in Mythology at Exeter University in England. She researched the occult in order to present an accurate representation in her books.”

Since when is French considered "Mythology."

From her biography listed with the Educational Paperback Association:

At Exeter University Rowling took her degree in French and spent one year studying in Paris. Source

I searched several Rowling biographies and found only that she studied French at Exeter. And no other references to studies/work in "Mythology."

Okay folks, take a deep breath and repeat after me ... IT'S ONLY A MOVIE. IT'S ONLY A MOVIE. IT'S ONLY A MOVIE. I'm sure JRR Tolkein and CS Lewis were accused of the same thing. Let's all relax, folks. HARRY POTTER is doing something that I didn't think was possible in an MTV age ... it's getting kids to READ and READ often. And that's a good thing. Parents can handle the rest.
