I will never forget that video showing the 2nd 747 going past the the smoking WTC from the first hit. Those sitting on the left hand side of the air plane had a clear view.
A question: Are you reflective?
I think that heroism comes from ordinary people placed in extraordinary circumstances and given no alternative but to act. The passengers of Flight 93 left that morning as ordinary folks on a seemingly ordinary day, and finished the day as heroes who acted with incredible bravery.
Yeah, but it's gonna take a shaking up of the American people who are asleep to get this country back. It might take another earthquake to do that though.
Many things in this article struck me to the heart. In regard to the two comments above, these two quotes from the above article stuck out strongly in my mind. Actually, they were sticking with me before I read your comments, but your comments really made them strike home. (Mind you, I'm not disagreeing with what you said.) They are:
... resistancefierce, unyielding resistancewas the spirit of Flight 93.
and, of course, the now, very famous:
Are you guys ready? Lets roll.
IMHO, the authors of this article, whether they knew it or not, showed that the spirit of the American people, has not, and will not, waver when put under the gun. I believe that this was a wake up call for all Americans.
Would the passengers of Flight 93 reacted in the same manner if several of them had not learned that two or three other planes had already committed assault on Americans on our own soil? I don't think any of us can answer this. But regarding my above statement about a "wake up call for all Americans" I believe many more of us are now prepared not to sit idly by when our freedoms are threatened either by terrorists, or by those with political motives.
I believe that the events of 09/11/01 propelled us into an era where Americans will begin (or renew), some slower than others, to take an agressive spirit when they are threathened. Not all of us may be in a position to take an active part; not all of us may be called upon to be on the front lines. But I believe that if the entire nation could read this article, and understand the underlying motivation of these Patriots, that no longer would we only display the "Spirit of '76" flag, fife and drum, but we would have a dual picture of the Spirit of '76 and the Let's Roll Eagle graphic from above.
(As a side note, I wish I knew how to manipulate grapics so that I could come up with that one -- also, a dual image of Iwo Jima and those Firefighters who were hauling up Old Glory in New York.)
Anyway, just my two cents worth, most likely slightly incoherent as I didn't have much time to spend on this reply, and I apologize for that.
Since 9/11, I have done two things regularly: I have asserted my conservative much more openly in honor of Barbara Olsen (Flight 77), and I make a point to say "Let's Roll" in my daily conversation as often as I can.
Instead of saying "Let's go" I say "Let's Roll." You would be surprised how often I can work it into a day's conversations. Each time I say it, I secretly think of Todd Beamer and the other heros on that plane, and vow not to forget.
I challenge you to do the same: Say it early and often throughout your day. And it won't be long before you hear someone else say it. And someone else...
Let's Roll.
.
Some things money can buy; for the rest you have to have the heart to make it happen.
The feeling is mutual, Tonk.
I'd be there with you anytime anyplace.
This is the most gripping story imaginable.
God Bless the families of these American heroes.
Me, too, Texasgirl.
I'm sure I feel the same way as Todd Beamer felt that day. I'd give my life for my country and my kids.
Both give meaning and purpose to life.
IMHO, 9/11 is the "earthquake" of which you speak, my FRiend. Most folks aren't admitting it yet, but the Righteous National Furor that we now have aimed at bin Laden is transferrable to other Murderous Tyrant Thugs like Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, Ziang Zemin, and William Jefferson Clinton. In due time, each will face their comeuppance and Justice shall not treat any of them kindly!!
FReegards...MUD
Yep...MUD
Once again, we, as Americans have shown that we are capable of doing the impossible, with panache and with no concern for their own personal safety.
These heroes should, by all rights, be considered members of the "unorganized militia", therefore part of the defense establishment of the United States, and at least be able to recieve the Medal of Honor (posthumously). Since, however, they will be most likely considered civilians, they deserve the highest civilian award which our Republic can grant, the Medal of Freedom, or some other such medal as may be designed for those who showed courage "above and beyond" on the day of terror. I realize that any medal or decoration cannot bring these heroes back, or even bring peace and comfort to their survivors, but they deserve the honor.
My prayers continue to go out for the repose of the souls of these departed hero warriors. May they Rest In Peace.
Keep the Faith for Freedom
MAY GOD BLESS AND DEFEND THIS HONORABLE REPUBLIC, AND GRANT THOSE WHO DIED HEROES ON THAT FATEFUL DAY, ETERNAL REST.
Greg
