Alliance Envoy Says Kandahar Falls to Opposition

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (Reuters) - Northern Alliance ambassador in Tajikistan Said Ibrohim Hikmat told reporters that the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar fell into the hands of the opposition and tribal rebels Wednesday.

``Today the forces of the Northern Alliance entered Kandahar,'' the ambassador said.

``They went in with the support of the local population which was rebelling,'' he said. ``The town is now under the control of the northern alliance. There are no Taliban in the city.''

The report could not be independently confirmed but one tribal leader said the Taliban had thrown a defensive circle around Kandahar and would fight off any attempt to capture the city.

I think the only form of government that will work is a representative government. A revolutionary ( pun intended ) concept in the Middle East. We should translate the Constitution into all the local dialects, turn it into pamphlets, and drop them everywhere.

I would go a bit further, and divide Afghanistan into mostly autonomous states, along ethnic lines. Let each ethnic group stay in its own state and not try to bother anybody else

And make sure that each Afghan has his own AK-47. The reason the Taliban were able to take over so fast, was that they had the arms.

Right...cut out the part about slavery. Still, most Afghanis shouldn't find the concept of electing representatives to be too hard to understand. If all the tribes don't get representation, they'll continue to fight. We want to set up a government, and Afghanistan doesn't have one. We might as well set it up right.
