Red Cross to Burn Surplus Blood

The American Red Cross collected hundreds of thousands of blood donations after Sept. 11 knowing that it could not be used for victims of the terrorist attacks.

After selling some of the surplus to hospitals, the Red Cross has begun to destroy thousands of pints that have outlasted their shelf life. Directors of several Red Cross blood centers said their sites may discard as many as 1 of every 5 donations and the national total could easily reach tens of thousands.

"The Red Cross may start to die a slow, painful death in America after this. The things they've done and continue to do are disgraceful. I feel bad for every American that donated to their fund, since just pennies on the dollar are going to the families of the attack."

They just don't seem to understand how upset the American people are. If they did they would be frantically hitting the talk shows with detailed plans of how they are going to make things right. They are definitely history and other charities like the United Way will go down with them.

United Way had not yet lived down the hookers, limos and huge salaries for their execs to say nothing of trashing the Boy Scouts before their bungling of the 9/11 donations. I was in the fund raising business for several years and of course the charity has to keep some of the money for their expenses but not most of it. Their lack of responsiveness is the most upsetting. Charities I'm familiar with would have responded immediately to public concern. But the RC attitude seems to be that they do us a favor by existing. Of the major charities, the Salvation Army has a good reputation and also a low overhead. Faith based - it works.

You are right. The families of the victims should be the only ones able to sell the blood of donors.

I received a telephone call from etrends.com. They wanted me to download some software that monitors my computer to rate websites. While on the phone, I looked at the website. The Bloodsuckers of America's (red cross) logo was at the top. In mid sentence, I stopped him and politely told him I didn't need to hear anything else, the logo at the top of the webpage told me they were not a creditable organaization. He was dumbfounded and tried to explain that they were not part of the red cross.

Again, in mid sentence I told him I was well aware of that, but that anyone aligning themselves with an organization that wasn't trustworthy did not deserve my time. Then I politely told him to remove my name from his database, we had nothing else to discuss.

One more reminder why we will never, ever, never again do anything to support the Red Cross.
