[history]
The American Red Cross collected hundreds of thousands of blood donations after Sept. 11 knowing that it could not be used for victims of the terrorist attacks.
After selling some of the surplus to hospitals, the Red Cross has begun to destroy thousands of pints that have outlasted their shelf life. Directors of several Red Cross blood centers said their sites may discard as many as 1 of every 5 donations and the national total could easily reach tens of thousands.

One more reminder why we will never, ever, never again do anything to support the Red Cross.

The American Red Cross collected hundreds of thousands of blood donations ......may discard as many as 1 of every 5 donations Blood is a commodity with a limited shelf life. If they collected hundreds of thousands of units and managed to put 4 out of every 5 of them to use, that's a pretty decent record.

Ironic. Local news (Ft. Smith, Arkansas) last evening reported a local "low supply" of blood and were encouraging people to donate blood again.

I'm sorry I sent them money. You and millions of other people. I didn't send them money directly but I am afraid they got their hands on the money I sent to other places after 9/11. I sent some through the FOP and I know that got to the police in NYC but I am afraid all the money for the victims in general got funneled over to the Red Cross.

Good grief, who is that walking skeleton?

You are right about the shelf life but I hate that they "sold" some of the blood to hospitals and pocketed the profit.

I do not like the Red Cross.
I objected when my office selected the Red Cross as the recipient of our donations. (Fortunately, they found another outfit.)
I give blood to United Blood Services, but not the Red Cross.
However, in their defense, they had no way to know how much blood would be needed in the weeks immediately after 9/11. I think they did the right thing to collect as much as they could manage. Unlike the funds which were earmarked for NY and apparently rerouted by the Red Cross, I believe most of us were giving blood in case it was needed ANYWHERE. Fortunately for us all, it was not all needed.

Locally is still a valid reason to contribute. I have a semi-rare blood type so I go in for family and friends whenever they need it.

We need to keep our focus and not get distracted by the misdeeds of the few. There will always be some who take advantage of circumstances. I think we can all be proud of the response of the general public in trying to help all the victims of 9/11.

Oh, My....that woman has anorexia....will no one help her? She's looking like another Karen Carpenter....

And the saddest part is that of the blood sold to hospitals for (I'm guessing $200 per pint), they then turn around and sell it to the patient for (guessing again $400 per pint).
Ironic isn't it, a person could possibly be paying an executive's grossly inflated salary with their own life juices.
Talk about "Blood Money".

They'll burn the extra money too. Donate locally. I hate to say it but WTC workers were not the nations needy.

The Red Cross may start to die a slow, painful death in America after this. The things they've done and continue to do are disgraceful. I feel bad for every American that donated to their fund, since just pennies on the dollar are going to the families of the attack.
In this case, I think anything you can do locally or on your own is worth so much more, and if you haven't given yet, find a more specific way to give. I have a law professor whose brother worked for Cantor Fitzgerald, and we took up a collection at the school. His family is giving it to the NYC firehouse in the neighborhood where they grew up - they lost 10 guys. We were able to come up with $25k, and a few people in the law school donated their time to handle the administration. I know once you split it up, it's not all that much, but at least they already have it.

Yikes. I'll never understand why women are driven to be so thin. I detest the "toothpick" look myself. It's actually ugly and it turns me off. I prefer a full figure in a woman, one with a healthy appetite, not one who plays with her food and has an appetizer as a main course.
