Ashcroft's Warning: Dirty Bomb

Posted on 10/30/2001 4:17:08 PM PST by DrCarl

Am I the only one who heard Sean Hannity, at about 5:40PM EST, stop while on the air and say: "So that's what Ashcroft's warning is. It's a dirty bomb."

Exactly correct, which is why the real "dirty bomb" is a fission/fission bomb. Not the non-sense being discussed in this thread.

If these terrorist dare set of a dirty bomb then they will see their own countries devasted with the REAL thing (Nuclear Bomb).

This could very well be the begining of WWIII.

PRAY HARD!

To reiterate: Anyone who thinks a radiological bomb, i.e., a bomb with explosives at its core and nuclear waste around it, is somehow going to cause massive casualties from radiation exposure and make an area uninhabitable, does not know what they are talking about. Do the research

Maybe a dirty bomb explosion like this in mid-America will cause all of this to happen at a remote site, such as Afghanistan, or my favorite choice, Medina.

Dirty bomb would be easy to spot via satellite if not shielded with lead. Also, even if it was shielded with lead, might be spotted with a neutron beam scanner.

Sad to say it but that might be what's necessary to get the mainstream media behind this war.

I also have to say I've been shocked Geraldos outspoken support for the war effort.

Apparently on Sept 11, the usual Muslim vendors didn't show up and even some of their children seemed to know ahead of time about the attacks, I would imagine they'll have plenty of advance notice on this too.

I'd think the quantity of iodized salt required would be lethal.

Perhaps because there isn't much iodine in it. They could increase it. I'm pretty sure iodized salt is NaCl with iodine added, not Sodium Iodide added. If you eat too much potassium (and from my recollection it doesn't take nearly as much potassium as sodium) it will kill you as well. Anyone have any info on this?

I love FreeRepublic and your responses on this thread is a prime example of why. Through all the fear, hysteria, and mis-information, your voice stands out like a beacon of sanity.

If there is enough radiation to contaminate half of the US concentrated in one bomb, then the level of radioactivity in the immediate proximity of the weapon would kill all those terrorists before they could act.

If the terrorists use radioactivity to terrorize our populace it would be a stroke of genius on their part, just by using our irrational fears against us. What next, exploiting our fears of second-hand smoke, SUV's, logging, and unsaturated fats?

Again, thank you for your participation on this thread.

Can you provide some links?

This is good news, but if they escalate the war in this way we should still think seriously about finishing them off with our Nuclear Weapons

I am not an expert, but I think you are correct, such a bomb would be emitting alot of particles. The Nuke waste bomb does not scar me one bit. Now the suitcase nuke is worrysome, but you've have to be real unluckly to be in it's small kill zone.

If the scum bags are going to use a nuke, I say D.C or Houston will be the target. D.C. to strike at the heart of the Federal Government. Houston to strike at the heart of the Bush Family power base.

Tell me pal...Before Sept. 11, if someone told you that terrorists were going to hijack and purposely crash 2 wide body aircraft into New York City's most prominent landmark, you would have thought that person insane. So don't rant about being cautious and a little fearful of further, and yes, even greater terrorist attacks on this country. Do you have any valid proof that these are only rumors. You are a fool!!

Are you calling Cheney hysterical? He's secured in an underground bunker a safe nuclear blast distance away from the president.

Exactly...and that has to be why the terrorists have such in interest...make a little bomb, dump a little radioactive waste in... it doesn't even have to be very potent....some medical waste will do... Boom! Icky mess and then a HUGE people reaction as the men in radiation suits with giger counters show up. That picture on the news would cause that whole city to empty in 48 hours, taking that states economy, and market down with them. That would a very big bang for their efforts

Getting creative -- what about other iodine sources. Such as sweetmeats (animal thyroids). Or bottled tincture of iodine?

The tincture of iodine would need to be diluted to some unknown degree--perhaps rendering it ineffective. Any chemists/pharmacists in Freeperland?

I remember many, many years ago the Tincture of Iodine bottle in the family medicine cabinet had a very serious-looking red Skull and Crossbones on the label.

FOX NEW LIVE 11:32PM CST STATED THAT AN ALERT CAME FROM CANADA REGARDING A "MAJOR EVENT" IN USA WITHIN THE NEXT 72 HOURS. IF SO, THE PROBLEM MAYBE CLOSER TO THE CANADIAN BORDER THAN THE MEXICAN BORDER. I agree with other posters...if they did this dirty bomb on US soil it should be their last act of terrorism. If they did I hope we would neutron bomb and elimiate: Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, North Korea, Somalia, Libia, and all other likely suspects, as well as immediate deportation of all non us citizens from the middle east. And hell while we are at it, after the 2 weeks passes for the neutron debris to settle, lets colonize the these countries and thier oil fields and declare them US property, and set up massive military bases there for any future terrorist plans in the area.

Cheney is not hysterical at all. We have no idea what the nature of the threat is that Ashcroft was talking about. There is only a rumor that it may be a "dirty bomb". The threat may, in fact, be a dozen different things.

The "dirty bomb", as Vauss has pointed out, is not as terrible as those that have an irrational fear of radiation would believe. While a "dirty bomb" would be awful, and would cause mass hysteria, the realities of such as attack would be less than most people would expect.

Crossing the border would be the hardest part. Once across, a truck could be almost anywhere in the US in a day.

Exactly, the resulting terror (hysteria) would be far worse than the actual damages.
