Ashcroft's Warning: Dirty Bomb

Posted on 10/30/2001 4:17:08 PM PST by DrCarl

Am I the only one who heard Sean Hannity, at about 5:40PM EST, stop while on the air and say: "So that's what Ashcroft's warning is. It's a dirty bomb."

A nuke or dirty bomb was my guess when I heard a news item (a couple weeks ago now, as I recall) saying we might use UAVs to scan the U.S. The only thing I could think that one could find that way is a radioactive source.

I'm not familiar with the term, UAV. I take it that this device can detect radioactivity rather well.

I'm suspecting that if they do go radioactive, it will be in the form of a conventional bomb with radioactive material scattered. I suppose they may have a suitcase, but it would be easier for them to obtain the conventional stuff with some nasty waste. Just MHO.

"Another, possibly more likely event would be the detonation of an "electronic bomb"."

I don't think that they have that capability. That would have to be a 'big' bomb and exploded high up to do serious damage.

can anyone go to this site http://www.ki4u.com/
and get the us map that shows the effect of nuclear testing in nevada? It shows how the wind , predictably, moved the radiation from those test over the PLAINS

After worrying about this since last night, I find myself beginning to hope the actually detonate one-- given their past track record they will accomplish about 1/10 of what they intend, but also give us the green light.

Once they open this can of worms, we can retaliate. We'll bleach their bones before they hit the ground. This might be as good a trade as we can hope for with this bunch.

Shame... Shame on you. I live in LA and I don't want this to happen here. You are sick... I have a four and seven year old and I am probably one of the few conservatives in the business... Don't wish this on anyone. Anywhere... Stop this... "If it's gonna happen it should happen_________. Bunch of crap. I pray to God that it doesn't happen here in LA or Houston, or Chicago or anywhere else... Enough of this BS.....

Chris

"Houston would be a good bet...."

Yeah, I'll sleep real well knowing that. :( There's small comfort knowing I'm on the west side, the weather patterns move east, and most anything that a terrorist would want to bomb is either downtown or on the east side--the ship channel and oil refineries. What a disaster that would be.

Something like a dirty bomb in Dallas or Los Angelos, and all the bets are off for a nuclear reaction in Irag and Afganistan will look like a lake.

BTW the liberals and the American Communists for so called liberty (ACLU) and thier minion Professors in the Universities better go undreground for a long time until we win this war.

Sorry, this is so absurd it is pitiful. Nuclear waste wrapped in high explosives will kill nobody except for those close enough to the blast to die from that. The waste itself will not kill anyone. Here is why:

1) Nuclear waste safe enough to handle by a bombmaker will be low level waste. Thus a person would have to be exposed to it for years before even a possibility that the exposure could cause cancer.

2) Nuclear waste distributed by a non-nuclear blast will be in fairly large particles relative to the size that need to be inhaled to cause cancer. If you can't inhale it, you won't get the exposure.

3) Using radioactive detection gear, cleanup crews will be able to find, bag, and transport to a disposal center 99.99 percent of any waste at the detonation site.

I have often found it amazing that otherwise highly intelligent and educated people can make such specious claims when it comes to fields outside their expertise. A radiological bomb is just another terror weapon. In some ways, if they are going to do anything, I really hope they do use it. Not only will it kill fewer people than dozens of alternatives, it will help educate the american people about radioactive waste as we clean up the bomb site.
