Well, I just finished installing Windows XP on my computer. It did not go nice and smooth. I ended up reformatting my hard drive and starting from scratch. I know Windows XP sure does not like AOL 6.0. I am in the process of downloading AOL 7.0. I am still installing all my old software. Yes Windows XP locked up on me many times today and last night. Well, I guess I just would like to know how every one else is doing with Windows XP.
However, I stepped officially away from Microsoft this year and I haven't looked back. Stability? XP may be stable, but what in the world took so long for Microsoft to release a truly stable OS? FWIW, my Redhat machine has never locked up, nor has my wife's G4 running OS X. And I mean never.
I do hope that XP is all it is cracked up to be, but I won't be one to tell you that one way or the other.
Actually, I am NOT against Microsoft per se, although everybody loves to poke fun at them because they are the biggest kid on the block. When I flip a KVM switch, I can go to an NT 4.0 SP6 box that has nearly every decent program known to man/woman on it. I can't remember the last time I re-booted that machine. I have a BUNCH of different programming tools on it, and IIS, MS SQL, etc etc etc on it. It works fine, no matter what I throw at it. BECAUSE IT IS SET UP CORRECTLY.
When a Mac is set up correctly IT does NOT crash either. All this stuff about Mac users being 'graphics' people is just a big stereotype, nothing more. Their new operating system is FANTASTIC. I DON'T agree with Steve Jobs' political beliefs, as he is a big-time Friend Of Billy Jeff Klintoon, but they make a nicely integrated software, hardware combination that makes the people who use them LOVE their machines.
Another big stereotype that is completely bogus, is that Linux is too dificult to use. If you know MS Windows inside and out, you can easily learn to be a power user of Linux, if you take a little time to RTFM. (Read the FReeping Manual)
If the thought police showed up tomorrow and took away all but one of those operating systems, I could still use a computer for anything I use one for now. THEY ALL WORK JUST FINE. And anybody who is shooting down ANY of them with a blanket statement about how theirs is best and the others suck, is either ignorant or dishonest.
Bush2000 and I have gone round and round in the past, as he ONLY advocates MS products, but at LEAST he is honest about that. He will defend MS to the end, but usually he argues on MS's merits, and doesn't spread dishonest or inaccurate generalizations about all of the other alternatives. (if memory serves, he works for MS)
I see nothing wrong with that, but I do see something wrong with knocking other OSes just because you aren't talented enough to set-up a box using it. When a customer asks my opinion about what solution they need for some IT problem, I do not automagically recommend a solution just because of what I know. I recommend a solution based on what they need for that problem. I feel like I need to know about most all of the tools out there so that I can HONESTLY provide them with the best solution. We have a responsibility to our customers to do our due diligence about ALL the tools out there.
Some here are projecting their own inadequacies on other operating systems either because they have a hidden agenda, or they simply are inept.
This post was composed on a Mac, and sent through an IP Chains/PPPoE Linux box. I have built HUNDREDS of PCs and installed MS based OSes on them, and been a sys admin at an ISP, so I have PLENTY of experience using ALL the various OSes.
Please describe exactly how Linux is viral, for the record.
Or retract your statement.

I am glad that I ended up reformatting my hard drive. I am starting over with a nice new clean system.
Had the computer on all through the night and this AM my computer is working great. Programs load really fast. All the software seems very responsive.
So far so good.
I'm liking it quite well! My Windows XP came pre-loaded on a new Sony VAIO computer that I recently purchased. I've been using it for close to 3 weeks, and it hasn't crashed yet! What a concept!
If you have more than one user for a computer, XP makes it very easy to change users and to customize the desktop and other settings for each user. Also, if you share an Internet connection, XP makes it easy to do so. I also like the "look and feel" much better!
Overall, I'm very pleased with it!

Great, I was hoping to hear from people who are truly using this OS. Only people using the new OS can really give a first hand accurate report on this OS.
Maybe MS has finally done it right for the average home user. I was so tired of Windows ME locking up every day!
Any one who is having problems with their Windows operating system should go and buy Windows XP and install it from scratch on their hard drive.
I am glad I did!
Anyway, I needed to completely reformat the computer...it seems the previous user had, for 11 days, registered so much stuff...it made the computer useless for me. I called HP support....did a fresh install/reformat...worked FINE except for one bug...I couldn't get OExpress to take my e-mail password. It seems with XP you need to create a user account in order to save your passwords in OExpress. My wife thought that was odd, seeing as though the original 'user' is an admin...and should have that ability.
Other than that my XP is working fine. I'm not thrilled by the almost 'cartoon-like' icons...the soft edges and rounded corners make the screen seem odd....it's not necessary and makes the transition tough to get used to.
She is getting ready to install XP PRO over the top of ME on our other computer in the next few days....that will be fun!
