(b) EXPEDITED CONSIDERATION- Any joint resolution submitted pursuant to this section should be considered by the Congress expeditiously. And my right to freedom from government intrusion without due process is of greater value to both me and my country than this newfangled "right" for government to become sigmoidoscopists against law-abiding citizenry "because we're at war".
Some of us think the government is entirely capable of abusing this kind of power.
The Founding Fathers thought so. That's why we have a Constitution. Perhaps you've heard of it?
I'll bet you a buck they don't.
. I realize that after 8 years of Janet Reno abusing almost everything she and the rest of X42's administration touched, It's hard to trust anyone in the Government. But I will wait and see before I condemn George W. Bush and John Ashcroft, I think they have our safety in mind and not stripping away any of the freedoms we now enjoy.
There was some old dead white guy named Franklin who said something once about a government who gave itself more authority and power with its populaces' "safety" in mind...
You can learn a lot from some of those old dead white guys.
Ouch...
"Loose lips sink ships."
Stop reminding us we're supposed to be free.
Don't you know there's a war on?
Comments from my friends at OA?
(And anyone who even DARES to call the fine people of OA "anti-American" can kiss my royal Heinz-57 @ss.)
I provide for the common defense - I pay for it with my tax dollars. Gladly.
I will not pay for it by relinquishing my Constitutional freedoms enumerated by the Founding Fathers you claim to respect.
We lost FReepers in the attack on 9/11...and I'll bet those noble, selfless people would have plenty to say about the proposed notion that their lives were more important than their freedoms.
BTW...if President Gore were in office proposing this, how would you react?
Hmmm...I've heard these arguments before...
Let me ask you how would you stop the shootings? Thousands of our citizens have died because of guns, and thousands more will die if we do nothing. You've just been elected President, now how are you going to stop people from getting killed by guns?
Bingo!
Of course not.
We have never known such a wonderful peace in our lifetime.
The view from under the sand is breathtaking, isn't it?

Such sarcasm, P-Marlowe.
U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Clause 11 -
"(The Congress shall have Power To) To declare War,
grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal,
and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water..."
Where is your Congressional Declaration of War, P-Marlowe?
Excuse me...but considering YOU'RE the one proposing that giving up Constitutional freedoms is necessary for safety, I submit that YOU are the one who has entered into "full panic mode".
In the Second Special Assembly for Europe, Archbishop Giuseppe Germano Bernardini, O.F.M.Cap., Archbishop of Izmir, in Turkey, spoke on "the problem of Islam in Europe today" (L'Osservatore Romano, November 17, 1999). "I will make mention three cases that, due to their provenance, I believe to be true," he said.
1) During an official meeting on Islamic-Christian dialogue, an authoritative Muslim person, speaking to the Christians participating, at one point said very calmly and assuredly: "Thanks to your democratic laws we will invade you; thanks to your religious laws we will dominate you..." I would say the enemy expects US to stay the course with our open society, allowing them to infiltrate to their hearts content, sure that we will not give up our right to privacy which they so handily exploit. Remember the terrorist who missed the flights 9/11 and his computer that was protect from government scrutiny?2) During another Islamic-Christian meeting, always organized by Christians, a Christian participant publically asked the Muslims present why they had not organized at least one meeting of this kind. The Muslim authority present answered in the following words: "Why should we? You have nothing to teach us and we have nothing to learn." A dialogue between deaf persons? It is a fact that terms such as "dialogue", "justice", "reciprocity", or concepts such as "rights of man" and "democracy" have a completely different meaning for Muslims than for us. But I believe that by now this is recognized and admitted by all. We are in harsh times and for a short spell harsh measures are called for, just as they were in WWII; during the second world war, the government didn't bother to pass bills with expiration dates, they just did as they damn well pleased to the constitutional framework. Personally, I'm encouraged that the legislators took the measure to take control over the suspensions instead of winking at the acts as they happen for our benefit ... they suspensions will expire in due course.
3) In a Catholic monastery in Jerusalem there was ... a Muslim Arab servant. A kind and honest person, he was respected greatly by the religious, who in turn were respected by him. One day, he sadly told them: "Our leaders have met and have decided that all "infidels" must be killed, but do not be afraid because I will kill you without making you suffer." This is the attitude that ignores our laws anyway, thus we must have a legislative way to go after these people while still in control of our destinies, thus the expiration dates on the bills.
Are these words anything more than naive or even "extremist" Christian reactions? The Archbishop added: "We are all aware that we must distinguish between the fanatic and violent minority from the tranquil and honest majority, but the latter, at an order given in the name of Allah or the Koran, will always march in unity and without hesitation."
You really know how to hurt a growing government's feewings, dontcha?
Out of date. Solid baby blue with the "we are the world" graphic is what's in store for us.
