The donation money trail; Red Cross use of charitable contributions questioned
Nightline, Koppel et al ^ | 10/26/01 | Red Cross and Dr. Healy

Posted on 10/26/2001 9:14:13 PM PDT by Diogenesis

This just in: Nightline.

Of the >$575 million dollars, the Red Cross took more than $300,000,000 given by donors
intended for 911 victims --- for THEMSELVES including overhead and overseas projects.

Bernadine Healy, head of the American Red Cross abruptly resigned.

"I had no choice," Healy said.

Donors have right to specify where their money goes.

It is imperious for the Red Cross to steal the money for other purposes.

[Some for the DNC perhaps, too? ]

Background here

My wife's uncle had very little regard for the Red Cross during WWII...he said that the Salvation Army was better.

There are no words at my command to express my outrage over this wonton abuse of the public trust, and the despicable arrogance displayed by these greedy self serving animals. I will continue to donate blood to the ARC, but I will be dam%ed if they get one more cent from me or any money under my control.

For resigning because she disagreed with the board? That's how I heard it; with one ear to the tube. The board voted to use the money other places. I wasn't paying close attention.

This is criminal. I had a bad feeling from the beginning of the tragedy that this would happen. I've never trusted large corporate-type charities like Red Cross and United Way. They were shilling for money the second these attacks happened, and took advantage of the generosity of millions of good hearted Americans.

I think Ashcroft has another job for a couple of agents. Arrest the board of the RED CROSS for FRAUD.

i think the Red Cross is caught between a rock and hard place as the govt reports 4900+ missing at WTC, but recent news reports say 2600-2900 missing. maybe the Red Cross is just waiting for someone to give an *honest* count of the missing, so they know who to give the money TO..

Another thing - give credit to Bill O'Reilly. He was warning of this for weeks, well before anyone else in the lamestream media would dare question the almighty Red Cross. Now Nightline is on the bandwagon.

Healy's resignation speech is posted on FR. She opposed the board's decision to "redistribute" (that is, scarf) the 9/11 funds, so she quit.

Did she resign because the board did this? Or did the board make her resign because she did this?

Your wife's uncle is a very wise and perceptive man.

Yes, you are right. In fact, I see that lots of others are jumping on the bandwagon, including Chris Matthews and Lou Dobbs, both of whom did stories on the general issue of whether/how the charities are getting money to victims.

I heard more than once today that she was the one who wanted to keep the WTC donations separate from the rest of the Red Cross' money.

As is Chris Matthews. He was covering it on Hardball earlier tonight, and even had on one of the same women from O'Reilly's show a couple of weeks ago. Are even the VICTIMS retaining PR firms now?

In the aftermath of Camille, the Salvation Army fed many of the victims at no charge. The Red Cross, on the other hand, charged the victims for even the doughnuts that they had. Since then, I have had little use for the Red Cross and nothing but admiration for the Salvation Army.
