AMERICA - The Right Way!! (Day 279) [Remember the Trade Center!!!]
Various News Sources and FReepers | October 26, 2001 | All of Us

Posted on 10/26/2001 4:29:08 AM PDT by Chairman_December_19th_Society

Good Morning!!

Do not let them die in vain!!

There a lot of stuff to get everyone up to speed this morning, so I'm breaking the opening rant into sections.

ANTHRAX ATTACK

Another confirmed case of pneumonic anthrax - the postal worker in Sterling, VA, is diagnosed with the malady.

Anthrax has been found at the CIA, though termed "medically insignificant".

Anthrax has been found at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

Anthrax has been found in a mail sorting facility in Manhattan.

Another possibly tainted envelope was reported at the New York Post, though it is likely "collateral mail".

Several suburban mail facilities in Washington, DC, are undergoing tests for anthrax.

Over 10,000 mail workers are on antibiotics.

CDC has changed policy regarding treatment of anthrax: exposed people should get 60 days of antibiotics, not the current 10 they are receiving. Pneumonic victims to receive multiple antibiotics - Cipro and at least two others.

SOUTH ASIA THEATER OF OPERATIONS

US warplanes and Northern Alliance troops step up attacks around Mazer-e-Sharif, though it is uncertain when the city will be captured.

Northern Alliance would like the United States to step up its attacks. The United States bombs Kabul and Kandahar.

Two American fighter aircraft narrowly missed a SAM shot.

There is growing criticism the United States is conducting the war too slowly.

Uzbekistan agreed to open some of its river ports to allow relief supplies to go to Afgoneistan.

HOME FRONT

The last President was mailed salmonella.

The Senate overwhelmingly (98-1) approves anti-terrorism legislation. The President to sign it today.

Groups have appealed to Tom Ridge to fortify the Nation's nuclear reactors.

A $1.4 billion package for emergency preparedness has been introduced in the Senate.

The UNITED WE STAND postage stamp will be available November 1 in Post Offices in Washington, DC, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

OTHER ITEMS

I learned this morning that another worker in my building - someone whom I've known almost since the first day I worked here, 14 years ago now - had her mother pass yesterday. I would ask for your prayers for her.

For AMERICA - The Right Way, I remain yours in the Cause, the Chairman.

AND A GOOD, 'END OF WEEK DAY' A.M. TO ONE AND ALL! Prayers for your co-worker and her family. As I read of the deaths in the papers each day I can only feel for the families as I know the grief they are going through. I heard that one of the Afgan leaders (our side, I guess) was captured. You see the jets streaking over the skies, bombs falling, the tanks, automatic weapons, troops jumping from planes, and the leader was captured on his horse. What a small world we live in after all. I am in my third day of my physical workout (swimming) and yesterday, 45 min of steady swimming. Today, sore as all get out. Every muscle in this ole 65 year old body is crying out 'more Ben Gay, please'! Prayers for our sick and dying, our love ones with a few hugs thrown in and special prayers for our President, the 'within' political attacks are starting, suttle, but starting. He needs us behind him durng these trying and important times. 'Better poor and humble than proud and rich' Proverbs.

...JeeZ! This early in the morning and you guys are already talking that gibberish? I need some more coffee....

Mrs. Bit cannot understand what I find so durned fascinating about all of this computer crap, and there are times (more frequently, lately) when I agree with her. I think she secretly takes sedatives to help her cope with my tech frenzies....

Good morning! The British Armed Forces Chief of Staff, a gentleman with a lovely Scots accent, just announced further deployments to the South Asia Theater (I think that is a good name, and thank you for using it). I didn't catch everything because I was still on my first cup of coffee, but it includes a carrier, several ships, a SUBMARIINE, various aircraft, and Royal Marine Commandos. The British stand fast!!

He also made a statement about how hard this was on the service families, because this deployment comes at the end of extended war games, and pledged that the government would do everything it could to assist the families.

Praying for your co-worker's family.

It is a chilly day in Virginia this morning. Sunny, but chilly.

I understand your other side of the argument..I think my angst in his "rhetoritic" is that you, dear Chairman, are the exception to the norm..while being concerned and no doubt alarmed at times...you are still able to keep your wits about you,,,I don't feel so confident about a huge number of americans to act responsibly, the same way you do.

If you get my point.

I agree, Chair, but why are we talking to Senators about this? I would like to hear what mayors are doing and what they think should be done.

My point is that Frist is a surgeon, and I would bet he knows only a little more about epidemiology than anyone else, but because he's a doctor everyone stops what they're doing and listens when he speaks because he may have some big medical insight (and he obviously doesn't).

ALL of them are alike, saying the same think over and over and over, same ole people, same ole subjects. I like Fox but they have a small selection of guest list, three I think, Richardson, Shays and King.

#5 Way Way Way----don't you know our govt. by now?

Intimately.

That's why I get tweaked by this approach. It's incrementalism. And it is an almost universal axiom that critical problems are critically underfunded.

It always starts with a low level until something is found wrong. Then it goes to a new, higher level, until something is found wrong. Then it goes to a new, higher level, until something is found wrong. Then it goes to a new, higher level, until something is found wrong. Then it goes to ....

Good morning!

Thanks Chair for the great recap of news as a beginning this am. That certainly catches me up... and fortifies my position that I don't need a TV. LOL

Bit... I had to laugh when I saw your post. I started through that stuff last evening then got tired of it so I just pulled the plug on the net. But no, no flashing red on the hub, did check the IP addresses and a cursory check. It's on the Win2KPro box "BigMac" I'm sure for I can see BigMac from Edinburgh (server) when I'm up. I'll figure it out but you can't imagine how good it is to get input from you. It helps with the thinking when the thinking isn't working.

S_Y... thinking and praying for you and yours. It is interesting to observe how these politicians work and for much of this now it is politics. I think they might have done a bit better, for the privacy issues, to put a calendar cap on the bill.

OM... you can't live with them and can't live without 'em. Am glad daughter is back and pray for patience. She'll learn and do well I'm sure.

kachina... did you use up all the material you were to pick up on the way home the other day? Don't mind our "geek" talk, we're just trying to impress the rest of you.

Lysie... gulfcoast6... Miss Marple... kassie... Molly...

Hi to each of you.

I don't expect they will act responsibly, not at all. Just witnessing the chaos that is Washington this week, I'm not sure it can get any worse.

I agree to a certain extent. However, Senator Frist is better than interviewing JOCELYN ELDERS!!!!

On another local bit of news, Eli Lilly Company here in Indianapolis is working on smallpox TREATMENT investigations, because they think some of their current anti-cancer drugs may be effective in the treatment of smallpox, and they have offered to make their scientists available to the government without charge. (I believe they will continue to pay salaries if these people work for the government.) I think that is an excellent contribution, and one which is probably playing with local corporations in other areas of the country which we seldom hear about, BECAUSE THE MEDIA IS DOING THE ALL-ANTHRAX COVERAGE 24/7!!!

I would like to hear what mayors are doing and what they think should be done.

There was a large emergency mayoral conference earlier this week. Fox News covered excerpts. Mayors in large cities discussed how they are reviewing their emergency prep plans and realizing they are wowfully inadequate for bio attack scenarios as reviewed in the current paradigm. They are calling on the Feds for money to get to first responders.

There was also a tidbit yesterday in terms of an announcement by the CDC carried by Fox News. Those field test kits used by first responders to test for anthrax may not be worth a darn. Seems they may be giving up false negatives (they also may be giving up false positives, but that's the safe position). CDC has advised that no evac/entry decisions should be based solely on those kits. (I would offer that a false positive should cause an evac order, just to be safe.)

That is good news. It would be good if we can find a treatment, for now there is none.
