The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Man is my Hebrew's rusty. And it didn't help that it was unpointed. Say what?

Except that we can domonstrate historically the distinctly Catholic doctrines were in place in the second century. This is why some Protestants are driven either to reject history or say that the descent into heresy must have been immediate.

Allow me to make an editorial correction in your post and I'll be in full agreement.

I understand that personal understanding grows. But I do not think you can make an analogy from the personal to the communal with respect to the Catholic church.

Not to mention that the "images" we see here on our computer monitors. I guess if we post a graphic, or even a picture of little Hannah, it could lead Havoc to temptation. He should avoid any such threads.

Oh my gosh! I've been worshipping my little Hannah by taking/posting pictures?!
I'm such a sinner.

Of course it develops, but in this sense: the Holy Spirit gives the Church a deeper or more poignant understanding of Christ’s teachings and Works, as we need them. You see that was the plan, not the modern tower of babble that sola scriptura, as embraced by neo-Christendom, has created.

I imagine you disagree with this.

Did you expect I'd agree. All necessary understanding was available immediately. Some, have played games with "Tradition" and/or "Magisterium" to modify this "understanding" to suit their needs.

Just because we claim a guidance from the Holy Spirit to protect us from error?

A community understanding certainly can be transmitted over the generations. If we take as axiomatic that which our grandparents struggled to prove true, we can then work on to higher understanding. Truth does not cease to be true with time.

So why can't Catholic communal understanding grow?

Therefore a Christian trying to refute the Arian heresy would have had a hard time reading thru his/her bible to figure this out.

This is true. Probably one of the reasons that the Arian heresy almost won. However, could a person depend upon the church for the teaching of truth? Aren't there some councils that have some Arian problems? Where would the individual turn to then?

When we accept His will and die to ourselves? If I, in a state of humility, don't belive I'm capable of understanding Scripture on my own, could that be an indication of the HS illuminating my mind?

No. Probably Satan.

But I do think that there's a sense of communal guilt (which we see in the OT) that we, as an individualistic nation have gotten away from. Our actions do affect others. Our sin does affect others. To pretend otherwise is to put our heads in the sand.

Well put.

I actually believe my level of understanding was exactly the same the day I accepted Christ as it is at this moment.

Would I teach differently, would I change some of the things I have done? Sure, but my understanding hasn't changed. Do you see the distinction?

Now will you respond to the "Rocky" thing?

I think if one wants to engage in apologetics and be taken seriously, he needs to be somewhat intellectually open.

Oh. I thought you meant anti-intelectual. The above insinuates intelectual dishonesty.

Then how come every scary movie with vampires or demons possessing someone (like the movie I watched last night) has people in trouble with the devil and they always want a priest? Huh? I've seen a lot of such movies and never, never has one person ever shouted out "get me a good Bible-based non-denominationl preacher." No, it's always priests and Holy Water and Crosses. :-)

Hollywood goes in for image over substance. The world has no idea about the spiritual. Neither does catholicism. Jesus and the Apostles used the authority of the Father - not tokens, crosses and 'holy' water which have no power over a single demon. Faith doesn't make a symbol work. And invocation of symbols rather than the authority of God.. Witches call them "spell components" or "familiar" items.

Last time I checked Al, pictures weren't graven images. A statue of little Hannah might be taking it over the line somewhat. No?

My post was all in the name of fun, Steven. Don't worry ... I don't buy into the graven image thing (unless folks are actually worshipping them ... that would be wrong).

Never ceases to amaze me how little regard the RCC and it's followers have for the word of God.

Too bad Aaron didn't own a canon 35mm. He could have taken a picture of the golden calf and then the milion and a half Israelis could have just stayed in their tents and bowed to the photos. :-)

Also if you take Ex 20:4, and De 4:16 to mean you can't make ANY image of a man or woman, than you have to include photos as well, and tv and film. They are all made by us and they are all images.

This is getting crazy. Look at the scriptures...God says in the following verse (20:5) that we must not WORSHIP or SERVE the images, for "the Lord your God is a jealous God." He's talking about idol worship. Don't treat them as you would God. Don't pray to them, don't bow the knee to them, etc.
