The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Bread doesn't become flesh and wine does not become blood. Would you like us to take a communion wafer and cup from a catholic church and prove to you that neither contains 2000 year old dna? It can be done. Oh that's right It doesn't really become flesh and blood lest ye all be called cannibals sacrificing the flesh of a man and eating it.. it's merely symbolic; but, anyone denying that it doesn't really happen is anathema.. So it's double talk because your own leaders haven't a clue what it means.

Is this a new definition here? "Doubletalk" n. - Anything too complicated for Havoc to understand.

I'll explain it to ya more slowly if you like. You have no conception whatsoever, "dna testing" "it's merely symbolic" you really have no clue.

Colonel, if that's what you really are, you do yourself and those you have (or used to have) authority over disgrace by coming in here and insinuating there's no need for God in a military situation. However, I believe all things happen for a reason and perhaps you've been drawn to these threads by the Spirit of God unawares. You are certainly welcome to stick around and participate because I know Jesus Christ can use this discussion to change your life as he has mine and countless others in here. Good day.

Wow! If that had been addressed to me, I'd have no choice but to bark back a hearty "Sir, yes sir!"

Carry on.

Sorry the Bible doesn't require documentation for post apostolic church councils, you see the church can go ahead and meet anytime, anywhere and no one has to take minutes. Its really a beautiful thing.

Steven, really. This is mind-numbingly anti-historical and anti-intellectual. The "Bible doesn't require" a lot of thing we do in the name of God. Not explicitly anyway. I would think that keeping good records of our thoughts about the Bible and God would be a helpful service to the Christians that would come after us. Give them a "leg up" on studying and understanding the Bible themselves.

Funny that no one would take minutes. So this is your explanation of why there is no written documentation of the Protestant religion between the first century and the sixteenth?

I got all the written documentation I need. Its called the Holy Bible.

I see. So you can’t prove your denomination has been around since the time of the Apostles either. So our documentation is bogus and you can’t provide any of yours. You guys are too much.

My denomination? News to me. Didn't know I had one.

Its all been provided Dave. The Lord gave us the "leg up" in a book called The Holy Bible. The "records" you refer too are contaminated and untrustworthy. If that's "anti-intellectual" so be it.

Consider "denomination" as shorthand for "all those people who believe in God and the Bible in the same way you do."

Now, isn't "denomination" shorter?

The point remains, where are the people in history who believe what you do and where were they before the turn of the 20th century?

The scripture that allend quoted according to many commentators indicates the Christ is foretelling that the Holy Spirit will breath the Scriptures for the apostles to pen.
John 16:12-14 17:19-21
allend>
Yes, that would be correct, but it pertains to more that just the Church during the lives of the Apostles, but to the Church until the end of the world. "I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as Thou, Father, art in Me, and I in Thee, that they also may be in Us; that the world may believe that Thou didst send Me."

Thus, the Church has to exhibit that unity in truth for all the world to see, believers and non-believers, until the end of the world.

We seem to be on the same page particularly :

I do not ask in behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;

I understand this phrase to mean "the Word", "the Holy Spirit breathed Word" penned by the apostles.

My only disagreement is over the phrase "until the end of the world."

My understanding is "until the end of the age" .

Tehillim (Psalm) 19:14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer

To which I reply "What about those Cowboys?" Needless to say, I was unimpressed. Emmitt looked good, but overall, it was quite a lackluster performance. They did play some solid football, but as usual, they couldn't finish off a drive.

In your mind there is no distinction between God's thoughts and what Havoc believes (knows) are God's thoughts. This is what you described as your internal dialogue.

Wrong - so wrong. But I see you are still trying to become a self styled psychiatrist. You need to lay down on the couch tho and talk to Jesus, bud.

Perhaps my comment would be more accurately stated: You believe you have come to learn God's mind - you often speak for God with no distinction, caveat or qualification made.

Jesus spoke for the Father and for himself. I know the word and the Word speaks for itself. To that extent, I have no problem speaking with the authority that Jesus has given us through his sacrifice. Nor do I have a problem boldly thumbing my nose at the devil and putting him in his place. Got a problem with that? Too bad.

Such gurus gain followers, those easily led by self-confident, knowledgeable, eridite and strident, the gurus are greatly driven, motivated by accumulating followers, but they tend to fall in their own pride, by not living up to the expectations they have created for themselves.

Gurus are liars and self-seekers. I draw people to Jesus. I don't want or need anyone following me. They need to be following Christ. That is where I point them and that's where they need to be going - to Christ. This whole guru thing is a self-defense mechanism for you. Try on some of your own psycho babble and don't waste my time with it, please.

I wish you well, honestly, but I will not be surprised to see this in your future.

Sorry, I leave pious fraud to false prophets and teachers. My Father has souls to save and I must be about the Father's business. My witness speaks for itself. You're profound mischaracterization of it is tribute to your intent to color me in whatever way possible to shut me up. I won't shut up - the word will not be silent, nor will the truth.

The point remains cuz I guess the Bible isn't enough for you. The people in history who believe what I do? I suppose in Abraham's bossom waiting for that great and terrible day of the Lord.

And the history of the faith, even if "contaminated" is not worthy of a look. You take the Bible and ignore everything else about what past Christians have had to say. Two millennia of Christians, some right, some wrong, have nothing to add to your benefit?

Yeah, that's anti-intellectual. It also leads many to follow the same stunted paths over and over, not realizing that the collective mind of Christendom has rejected these paths. And rejected them for cogent reasons and to forestall the development of further heresy.

Whatever you call yourself there should be a historical record of those who hold the same beliefs as you do from the time of the Apostles to the present. If there's not, you should be asking yourself some questions.

Can't you see the point is in dispute? I see the early development of the Catholic Church in the Bible. You see the early development of the invisible Church, which just happened to have Apostles still alive and able to speak with the authority which would soon be lost forever.

The Bible can not solve this problem by itself.

So we turn to the earliest history we have and we can conclude the existence of a proto-Catholic Church in early history. And we turn to the early history of your church, of the group of true "invisible Church" Christians, and we can't find it.

No history at all. Not until way after the Reformation. It's almost like these types of Christians never existed until the 20th Century.

The people in history who believe what I do? I suppose in Abraham's bossom waiting for that great and terrible day of the Lord.

Not "where are they now," but "where are they in history"?

"Whatever you call yourself there should be a historical record of those who hold the same beliefs as you do from the time of the Apostles to the present."

Why is this so important to you guys?? This boggles my mind. So somehow the actions of man supercede the actions of God. Once saved, we are adopted into the family of Christ and become members of the Body of Christ not some denomination. I will agree that denominations have seriously fractured the Church and have hurt the testimony of unity, but I will add that Catholicism is a denomination just like Baptist or Methodist.
