The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

Are you actually a person? You have been sending the same post repeatedly to all you respond to since last night.

Shhhhhhhh, not so loud IL, the800bass doesn't realize he's doing that, and we don't want to embarrass him by telling him, so let's just keep it between us, ok? (^g^) JH

Where's Lent in the scriptures?

I don't expect you'll find the word "Lent" in scriptures. Nor will you find explicit references to any of the liturgical seasons. As a result, we would not consider observance or even recognition of the church calendar to be necessary for salvation.

Nonetheless, we observe the "seasons" of the church year in our worship and in our daily practices. The calendar starts with Advent, then Christmastide, Epiphany, Lent, Eastertide, Ascensiontide, and finally Trinitytide. Through the liturgical seasons, we follow Jesus' birth, showing forth, passion and death, resurrection, ascension, public earthly ministry, and the anticipation of his coming again.

The model for our Lenten exercises is Jesus' retreat to the wilderness for forty days after his baptism and prior to the start of his public ministry. During this season we abstain from various earthly pleasures and make a special effort to examine our lives and to bring them into conformance with Jesus' commandments.

I'll try to make it to the Bethel Baptist, is that okay? I've gone to the 1st Baptist a lot but never to the Bethel Baptist.

I'd choose a synagogue but the nearest one is over 55 mi away.

Lent is forty days before Easter excluding Sundays..On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation.

Didn't ask what it is. I asked where it is in scripture. The ones you posted don't explain lent.

I lived in Burke VA for a year and loved it (course I was a kid). Southern manners just outside the beltway.

I lived in Burke ("the Oaks") from '79-'95 (except college) and my parents still have a house there.

"Southern manners" is now quite a stretch for anything north of Fredericksburg (and even that is losing it).

If your question is truly serious, read Luke, Chapter 4. The example of Christ's withdrawal to the wilderness and his fasting for forty days is most often cited as the inspiration for Lenten observations.

I'm not familiar with the Benediction service, but by your description it does not sound like anything for which the Orthodox have a parallel. Most weekday Lenten services are either vespers or modified Liturgies, as no host is consecrated except on Sunday and Wednesday evening full Liturgies.

I'm an autobot. But the catch is I only respond coherently to coherent statements. It's how I'm programmed.

Here's the quote I mentioned earlier:

"When Catholicism goes bad it becomes the world-old, world-wide religio of amulets and holy places and priestcraft. Protestantism, in its corresponding decay, becomes a vague mist of ethical platitudes. Catholicism is accused of being much too like all the other religions; Protestantism of being insufficiently like a religion at all. Hence Plato, with his transcendent Forms, is the doctor of Protestants; Aristotle, with his immanent Forms, the doctor of Catholics." - CS Lewis, "The Allegory of Love"

In case you get curious, there's an excellent Orthodox Church in Lafayette. St. Luke's on Stonehenge Drive. My wife and I attended a few times when we lived in Ft. Collins. The pastor, Fr. David Mustian, is a good man. The parish converted en masse from Episcopalianism about 10 years ago when the Episcopal Church started to go off the liberal deep end.

I believe one of the reasons that the NT took so long to put together was because of the amount of forgeries that were circulating even 100 years after the death of Christ. My point is that since Jesus' time, forgeries have been abundant and the problem has been deciding what was real and what was not. In case anyone is wondering, the decretals Havoc is talking about were written in France probably 3 Popes (not sure in years) before they ever made it to Rome - they had been accepted in general use well before Rome ever got them.

3 popes prior - no. The title "pope" didn't exist before Nicholos I, first of all. Second of all, a couple of the documents were much earlier forgeries. Third, it is known that they were created in the time of Nicholos because of certain things Nicholos commissioned done prior to the inclusion of the decretals. They were well aware of the actual history because of the studies done. Such a study would tell them both what they had to work with and what they would have to fabricate. You have to get deeper into the history of what was going on to see the whole picture. Most are not willing to do that. I might also throw in the fact that certain writings that were drawn from, in my readings were available only to Nicholas at the time. Pretty hard to pawn guilt off on someone else in that light.

I'll pray for you that this is true and remains so, and that the demons don't lead you along a deceptive path. God be with you.

Cute. Demons leave when commanded. How you get from that to being led by them... I know, just a swipe at something you either don't understand or don't believe, right.

As you know, Lent is not specifically mentioned in Scripture. Lent is a practice that has developed over the centuries and has been passed down via tradition as something that is beneficial for Christians. It is a period of intensified prayer and fasting and repentence leading up to the celebration of the glorious Resurrection of our Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, during which Christians are supported by the communal nature of a shared fast. As you know, there are many passages in Scripture that support the practice of fasting.

The Orthodox try to abstain entirely from meat and dairy products for the 40 days leading up to Holy Week, the week before Easter, and try to intensify their fasting during Holy Week by limiting their speaking and television watching and such. The spirit of the season is best reflected in the Lenten prayer of St. Ephrem the Syrian:

O Lord and Master of my life!

Take from me the spirit of sloth, faint-heartedness, lust of power, and idle talk.

But give rather the spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to Thy servant.

Yea, O Lord and King!

Grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother.

For Thou art blessed unto ages of ages. Amen.

Can you elaborate on this? I am really curious about the above statement. I've never heard anyone say anything like it. Thanks!

What question do you have? We have authority by the blood of Jesus and through the Holy spirit. If you have neither you have no authority in Him. When the devil tempts, you command him to go. When he oppresses, you command him to go. When he attacks in any other way, you command him to go. But, absent Jesus in your life, you've no authority to tell the devil anything - or any of his minions, or any other spirit. It's not surprising that you haven't heard anything like this. RCC clergy will only say things like 'there is power in prayer'. They don't know the first thing, in my experience, about the true authority they are supposed to have. If your priests ever woke up on that matter alone, there'd be a mass exodus from Catholicism IMO.

Havoc, wake up! The definition that is "completely valid" is the one that has been in use for over 1500 years. Theotokos = Bearer of God. Ay Carumba!

Wake up? LOL. Get a grip. I defended a definition that most definitely exists. What's your problem.

When we used to live in the desert our friends kept their Great Danes near their trailer whenever there were coyotes around. They said that one time a coyote let one of the Danes chase him out in to the scrub, where a pack descended on him. Our friend chased them off with his handgun.

I don't ever underestimate the power of our Lord, but I try never to underestimate the cunning and persistence of our adversaries either. I don't know you or your situation. If you have genuinely driven them off, God bless you and your work. I would humbly remind you that this is through no power of your own, and to always be on guard against pride. Thus my offer of prayers. My offer was genuine, and I'm sorry that you are not trusting enough to receive it as such. Christ Bless.

It snowed in Dallas for little Grace's birthday.

The best kind of snowfall, too. Lot's of the white stuff, but the roads stayed clear. We got about 3 - 4 inches here in Allen. Not much by Pittsburgh or Green Bay standards, but it's been a while since I've seen this amount here.
