The Neverending Story
An ongoing debate on Scripture, Tradition, History and Interpretation.

Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams

I just went to a mass about a year ago tho.

I kinda felt like a porkchop in a synagogue tho. :-). Actually I've been to charismatic and AOG's. I am going to a Messianic Jewish congregation for passover this year.

Who wants in?

I'd be interested. There's a Greek Orthodox parish in my town and I've always been interested going there. The trick is when. Next Wed is Ash Wednesday and I wouldn't want to miss a Sunday in Lent at my own parish. I've been to enough non-liturgical services in the past to know that's not for me. Seems like a "one of these days" kind of thing.

I've always wondered if I could someday go to somewhere, um, untouched by certain developments and open up a shop. I figured I could sell bagels, rent videos, have a laundromat and shooting range. Wouldn't it be fun to shoot a few rounds while you're waiting for the spin cycle? Maybe sell a few beers for folks who aren't shooting.

Uncle Daves, Booze, Laundrymat, Target Range, and Porn shopee. (it would be a big sign but I kinda like it:)

That's an interesting idea, I think I'd be game. Can't make any promises about how soon I'll get to it, but it would be a good learning experience. There's actually a Baptist Church just down the road from me, I'll have to get the name.

I was in an RC Church recently, the Friday after 9/11. Closest Church to my office to go say prayers at lunchtime. I've also been to the UU Church in the area recently. Let me tell you, you haven't seen a liberal church 'til you've seen the UU Church of the Amherst/Northampton area of Massachusetts. Yikes!

The Greek Church will be celebrating the start of Lent, Holy Week, and Pascha/Easter on the old calendar, so you might have a good opportunity to attend a service. Any Orthodox Church would be having Saturday night vespers and Sunday Liturgy throughout Lent, even if they don't usually do vespers, and most will also do Wednesday and Friday vespers as well. Then there would definitely be services every night of Holy Week. Orthodox Easter this year doesn't fall until May 3. You'll all have to pray for me, I'll be still fasting long after you've celebrated Easter.

Don't forget the water slide, (would be even a bigger sign:) you get the kids and the parents follow right along.

I cannot find the last post that you sent me. Was it deleted? Anyway I saw a quote from you ranting and raving about Foxes Book of Martyrs. Here is a quote from a biography on Tyndale,

What was Tyndale's crime? For what was he arrested, imprisoned for so long and evenutally condemned to death? ...In other words the charge was heresy (emphasis mine), with not agreeing with the Holy Roman Emperor-in a nutshell, being a Lutheran.

I did that once as an assignment in college: our assignment was to go to a group we were least like and try to fit in. My girlfriend and I attended a Pentecostal Tent Revival. Someday I'll tell ya that story.

As for your idea, I'm in — provided I don't have to touch any snakes.

Yes, but you'll be starting later. During Lent, we have Sunday and Wednesday eucharist and Friday Benediction and Stations of the Cross. I find the Stations to be a very effective Lenten devotion. I must admit to having some concerns with Benediction. Do the Eastern churches have such a service? I tend towards the Anglican interpretation of real presence (though I don't go as far as Cranmer did). I believe that the purpose of the sacrament is communion, not adoration. I don't object to reserving the sacrament, but holding it up for everyone to see does bother me some.

The Book of Martyrs is propoganda in behalf of a queen who was busily hunting down Jesuits with her secret service

Now, why would they be hunting down Jesuits? Could it be that they wanted to murder Elizebeth and tried killing James in the Gunpowder plot?

As for the Irish the worst foreign ruler they had over them was Rome.

And before you start talking about Cromwell and his war with the Irish, do not forget they massacred thousands of innocent English men, women and children, which is what led to Cromwells retaliation.

You RC's sure do love rewriting history!

Lent is forty days before Easter excluding Sundays..On Sunday we must celebrate Christ's resurrection for our salvation.

Moses stayed on the Mountain of God forty days (Exodus 24:18 and 34:28), the spies were in the land for forty days (Numbers 13:25), Elijah traveled forty days before he reached the cave where he had his vision (1 Kings 19:8), Nineveh was given forty days to repent (Jonah 3:4), and most importantly, prior to undertaking his ministry, Jesus spent forty days in wilderness praying and fasting (Matthew 4:2).

Lent is a period of prayer and fasting. Christ used a forty day period of prayer and fasting to prepare for his ministry, which culminated in his death and resurrection, and thus it is fitting for Christians to imitate him with a forty day period of prayer and fasting to prepare for the celebration of his ministry's climax, Good Friday (the day of the crucifixion) and Easter Sunday (the day of the resurrection).
