Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty, but it is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. The only foundation of a free constitution is pure virtue. - John Adams |
Isn't it the responsibility of all Christians to spread the gospel? The 'universal priesthood' of believers?
This was from an in house type memo, he was saying they may be scorned by others in the church.
heh, heh, heh, what are you doing in the liquor store, huh, trying to convert inebriated Baptist?
IMO ... it was a time to show justice. It was a time to show the people the error of their ways.
As a father, do you discipline your children (or are they too young still)? I'm not talking about spanking, just discipline in general.
Turning the other cheek does not mean doing away with justice. There are consequences for our actions ... both good and bad.

Aren't we all?

By this are you implying that there may be others out there that are guided by the Holy Spirit besides the pope?
Say it ain't so......(*g*)
Didn't say he was, merely asking. Quit twisting and putting words in my mouth. For which I'll expose your tactics later in this post.
You thought it was OK if some Catholic had previously called someone a dirty name.
I think you meant to say "if some non-catholic". Nonetheless, twice I told you I didn't think it was ok for that to happen.
Example #1: Post #1425 Not with him on this one. Just pointing out your silence when it happens on the other side. And, yes, you were around. Wasn't that long ago.
Example #2 Post # 1434 Which part of "I am not with him on this one" don't you understand?
If all you're gonna do is post at me and not listen to what I say I'm afraid I'm gonna have to expose your lies about what I said. Please stop doing that. It lays bare your disingenuousness when ya try to warm up to the non-catholics.
[44] And all who believed were together and had all things in common; [45] and they sold their possessions and goods and distributed them to all, as any had need. [46] And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they partook of food with glad and generous hearts, [47] praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. (Acts 2:44-47)
This is probably a very common occurance in study groups across the board. I know it happens in my parish. We have a group that gets together every Sunday morning and on a number of occasions, the discussion has become very heated. It's as if some people want the church to change according to their views instead of changing their views to match those of the church.
It's kind of frightening when our day (me and my wife) to facilitate the study, because we know in our hearts that something we say will set off the ones who lean toward their view of Christianity instead of the church's view. My last lesson was the Sunday following the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon. It was really difficult (almost frightening) to go into that room and talk about forgiveness (the subject of the readings all week after the attacks and the following Sunday) to people who were hurting, mourning, angry, etc. But I know that I was supposed to say the things I did and I offered it with no apologies. We did have a couple of heated discussions, but it actually went over very well, much to my relief.
But I guess that's why we have these study groups, isn't it ... to talk it out and help each other along our walks?
You also won't find any support in the Hebrew scriptures for the idea of individual interpretation.
I don't understand your statement. I immediately thought of my favorite OT chapter---Psalm 119, which include these words addressed to the LORD from the psalmist.
Thy hands made me and fashioned me; Give me understanding, that I may learn Thy commandments.
I have more insight than all my teachers, for Thy testimonies are my meditation.
Deal with The servant according to Thy lovingkindness, And teach me Thy statutes. I am Thy servant; give me understanding that I may know Thy testimonies.
The unfolding of Thy words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple [hopefulpilgrim].
Make Thy face shine upon Thy servant, and teach me Thy statutes.
Thy testimonies are righteous forever; give me understanding, that I may live.
Let my cry come before Thee, O LORD; give me understanding according to Thy word.
Let my lips utter praise, for Thou dost teach me Thy statutes.
If so, then how can you say that we all aren't part of His church?
We are all created to be part of that church. Whether or not we choose to follow is up to us, but we are all called.
The authority to interpret the Law was not given to individuals:
[8] "If any case arises requiring decision between one kind of homicide and another, one kind of legal right and another, or one kind of assault and another, any case within your towns which is too difficult for you, then you shall arise and go up to the place which the LORD your God will choose, [9] and coming to the Levitical priests, and to the judge who is in office in those days, you shall consult them, and they shall declare to you the decision. [10] Then you shall do according to what they declare to you from that place which the LORD will choose; and you shall be careful to do according to all that they direct you; [11] according to the instructions which they give you, and according to the decision which they pronounce to you, you shall do; you shall not turn aside from the verdict which they declare to you, either to the right hand or to the left. (Deuteronomy 17:8-11)Of course individuals can study the Law (the original synagogues were actually schools for Torah study, and only became the center of worship after the destruction of the temple). But when a question arose about interpretation, the authority to decide was given "to the Levitical priests, and to the judge who is in office in those days", not to any regular Schlomo.
And a hearty "Amen!" to that.
I think I'm gonna have ta start takin' those stillers semi-seriously.
What a glorious day to be a Steeler fan. The Bucs made the mistake of trashtalking and basically daring the Bus to run against them. The Steelers made Tampa's "dominant" defense look silly. By the mid of the third period their defensive greats were sucking wind.
The Bus threw a TD pass and once in the game Kordell Stewert stayed on the sideline and they hiked the ball to a receiver lined up in the backfield. All this and they still could have lost with a play or two at the end. We still need to get the offense scoring when we have the chances.
Next up the first-ever Monday night game in Heinz Field against the Titans. This will be one to watch. Can the surging Steelers give the struggling Titans a mercy killing?
Oh, and Penn State finally won a game, letting JoePa finally tie Bear Bryant's record. And Notre Dame won too!
(If only the Lions would have held out!)
