Request for comments: new feature

Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson

I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.

Have a look at it here:

Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts

New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread

I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

I also like the way this new engine zeros me right to the reply addressed to me -- instead of wasting time scrolling through trying to find the one addressed to me (I always forget the number if the thread is especially interesting.)

It didn't do that for this post. I just was taken to the beginning of the thread.

John, thanks so much -- what a great feature that "all" is, to keep everyone up on latest info additions! This sounds trite, but WOW!, and thanks again.

Is it possible to make the URL show along with a link (on, say, latest posts or bookmark pages)? I do a lot of cutting/pasting info to pass along and for my later retrieval, but the links, of course, are not active when I do that -- would sure help to have URL listed, as well.

John, please remove the all option. Keep it for admin purposes. It is not going to be easy to navigate through self search if all become an option for everyone. Thanks. But a nice feature!

Where should last go? To the last comment on the entire thread, or the last comment on the page?

Well, since I like the setup of the "Old Style" buttons, I will say - last comment on the entire thread.

(I just noticed you do have top and last buttons in small print on top in the "New Style." I guess I didn't notice them.)

Since some people will be reading a thread over several pages, I don't know what they'll think regarding "Last," but, it's easier to scroll 1-50, than 1-last at 250. : ) Thanks John.

Have you gone to the top of this thread? Do you see where it says "Settings" in this "New Style" format? Click there, then where you see "Pagination" click on your preference. It should then make a thread page as long as you like (up to 250 posts on one page.) : )

John, could you, would you, please consider putting the "Top" and "Last" buttons in the New Style format on the line where "Post Reply" and the other buttons are? It was/is a very helpful feature, IMO. Like, if you're at post 230 and you want to check a sentence in the article at the top of the page, it's much easier to just click "Top" than to have to scroll all the way back to the top. Thanks, John.

Thanks so much! I LOVE the new format. Heck, I love being able to BE HERE...you could do it in pig latin for all I care. I'd go and translate, somehow, just for the privilege of being able to be on the World's Greatest Forum. Humbly I get off the soap box. Thanks again for your hard work.

I have to admit that you are doing some cool things. I like the self search with the latest changes, and the new features are cool. I was scared for a while there, but keeping the "Clasic" look has made us happy while giving us the advangages of all your great new features. One time you said that you were going to give us the ability to upload images to FR. Are you still planning on that or have you had 2nd thoughts? Good job John.

As somebody who puts a lot of material on the bumper of a post, I'm particularly appreciative of the way long threads are now broken up, while still permitting easy navigation through all of the comments. Thanks!

Well, today it doesn't (zero in on the right reply). My head is spinning with all the changes! LOL.

Yeah, I noticed that, too. I've never come to love something so quickly in such a short time as that feature.

Yeah, me too. What happened to that feature, John? Will it come back?

Could you do an all encompassing thread explaining how to use all this new stuff for those who are technically slow? I set some of my preferences, but I did not know ahow to answer some of the other questions. A complete explanation would be helpful.

And I hope you bring back that feature that zips us precisly to the Reply #. That was neat!

Also, I would like to know how to post a link that takes the reader to the exact reply on another thread. I know there's a way to do it, but I've forgotten how.
