Request for comments: new feature
Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson
I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.
Have a look at it here:
Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts
New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread
I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

cool, look forward to seeing them. you lucky dog, you get to program for a living :-)
and ditto the "include reply" function for replying. can it include the whole post in a box, and you can edit it down to just the parts youwant to quote?

No, it can change. Should change. I don't use that feature so I often forget about it, but it's really no sweat.
To: John Robinson
Just a general comment. All your changes are great!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You may now ignore all previous complaints by other Freepers. Thank you.

excellent again, john. i have a question....
going through my self search (option 1) i saw a couple of these:

...but i can't seem to find which string they were "moderated" from, and i don't recall
my posts being expurgated. were these replies to me that got pulled, replies i replied to that got pulled, my replies that got pulled, all the above?
if i can't find the string they belong to, maybe they shouldn't display? hmmm?

I like the new "Self Search" John. Something I really LIKE is that now it only finds "DB" and not any length IDs with a "db" sequence in it. I would have to search through hundreds of "Self Search" hits that weren't to me. I often missed them because there are so many

Dividing the thread in blocks of 50 should be a switchable option. It might normally be on for low bandwidth and WEBTV people and off for fat pipe-ers.
To: John Robinson
Se;f search as a thread NEEDS to be switchable. I like seeing other peoples comments and things in context. Otherwise its really choppy. I'm in a lot of threads; I'd lose track of what was being referred to and/or said.
To: John Robinson
Nice. See what I miss by going to a fish-fry <VBG>. Three requests (one for the newest versions of self-search, 2 on the "view replies" function of Forum 3.0).
First, could you allow the same choice of viewing the self-search in either Classic FR or New Look FR as in the forum itself (I'm getting quite attached to my style sheet, even though tables currently extend too far to the right in IE6, and some threads inexplicably don't fully-load in NS4 :-) .
Next, could you allow us to reply to the top post in a "view replies" window (example; if I click on view replies to a post #2, I want to be able to also reply to #2 and not just its replies)?
Finally, if you could add a "return to main thread" link, it would be great for those who don't want to have to keep on clicking the "Back" button on the browser (not a personal concern, but something I suspect most people would like).

To: All will now ping everybody that has posted on the thread. First person to abuse it gets his or her choice of hand severed! :-)
To: glock rocks
Hrm, good point. Hrm... that's one to dwell on.
To: John Robinson
Oh, yeah, pinging EVERYONE, making this a 500 post thread.
I don't think Notradamus predicted this.
To: Lazamataz
Settings... go to "Settings" choose 250, and you're good to go.
However, the bandwidth savings is on FreeRepublic's side of the wire too.
To: John Robinson
This is powerful to go back to previous rants and repost them instead of retyping them all the time. It makes the job of spreading the word more powerful. Of course, all powers need to be balanced, so watch out for abuse of this feature.
To: 6ppc; John Robinson
Really liking the new features. One suggestion. When you post your reply to a post it takes you to the top of the last page, i.e. the page with your reply. I've always wanted it to take me back to the message I'm replying to so I don't lose my place in the thread.
. . . or else to the bottom, where I can review my post before using the "TO 58" feature to go back to my place in the thread. That's still my practice, tho you seem to have killed the dreaded "open tag carryover" bane which made that a good idea for catching your own or others' open tags sooner rather than later . . .
To: John Robinson
Oh, "To: All" only pings those who've posted on the thread. Well, cancel that 500 post thread comment. Never mind.
