Request for comments: new feature

Posted on 10/13/2001 3:17:06 AM PDT by John Robinson

I've been tinkering with a new way to do self-search. It will display the comments as if they were in a thread, but only displays those comments addressed to you or posted by you.

Have a look at it here:

Last 100 posts involving you -- in reverse chronological order, like latest posts

New posts to you (since last time you checked) -- in forward chronological order, like a normal thread

I think this should be listed in forward chrono order, but that might make browsing your self-search awkward.

Good point. Hrm. Now, is this a user preference, something out of the way until you need it, or are the two simply equally used tools.

The first time I looked at the new style, I wasn't too crazy about it -- but right now, it's looking really really good! I like the new self-search features too. Still getting used to the 50-post thread break - it makes fast threads (like real-time commenting on the President's speach) reload faster - just have to get used to moving to the next section.

Well, cancel that 500 post thread comment. Never mind.

no 500 is probably accurate even if restricted to the present thread, the disruptors will absolutely love this.

I like the two links that were in each post line: one to the article and one to the reply itself. Also, it's confusing to not have the recipient's name on the line flagging the post that I make.

Otherwise I like it fine.

I miss having the header on the self-search screen. I typically use that to read my freep mail, etc., which leaves my primary browser free to display the headlines. It saves a lot of wear and tear on the "back" button. ;-)

I also wish that the links in "Breaking News", etc., when clicked in the primary browser, would open on the secondary browser, just like the regular article links. Why hasn't it always worked that way?

It just keeps getting better and better! Thanks for all the hard work both of you do, in different ways.

excellent again, john. i have a question....
going through my self search (option 1) i saw a couple of these:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...but i can't seem to find which string they were "moderated" from, and i don't recall my posts being expurgated. were these replies to me that got pulled, replies i replied to that got pulled, my replies that got pulled, all the above? if i can't find the string they belong to, maybe they shouldn't display? hmmm?

Hrm, good point. Hrm... that's one to dwell on.
IMHO, they shouldn't be displayed (don't have a clue as to whether Perl is up to it). The person whose reply gets pulled should (again, IMHO) get a courtesy FReep-mail (don't know if that is current policy, so don't flame me if it already is-VBG).

Thanks, but what I do here is infinitesimally insignificant compared to John ;^)

When you right-click on a link (I am, of course, assuming you don't have a 1-button-mouse Mac, in which case I think the equivalent is holding down the mouse button), you do get the option to open the link in a new window. That's saved me countless times.

Still, I miss the Latest functions. Then again, Forum 3.0 is still in beta and John might not have gotten around to wrapping something that is known to work into something that isn't known to work (following the 1 bug at a time principle).

Yeah, I know, but that clutters up the screen with browsers (which Windoze 98 is allergic to, and reduces the time to the next therapeutic reboot). And then I get confused as to which is the "real" slave browser.

Oh, here's something that makes me absolutely nuts. In the text box where I'm typing now, it used to be that when I tried to scroll beyond the end of the text with the arrow keys, the cursor stayed at the end of the text. Now it gets transported magically to the top of the text with the next keystroke. The only safe way to position the cursor at the end of the text (e.g., to append more text) is by using the mouse, which is awkward. Can this be put back the way it was?
