BREAKING: Anthrax case possible in VIRGINIA
AP Breaking ^ | 10/09/01

Posted on 10/09/2001 12:15:18 AM PDT by cgk

Elsewhere, a state official in Virginia confirmed that health officials there were monitoring a possible case of anthrax at a northern Virginia hospital.

Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Va., contacted the state health department with a possible anthrax diagnosis, "one of several possible diagnoses" for the victim, whose name was not released, said M. Boyd Marcus, Gov. Jim Gilmore's chief of staff. He said a germ culture from the victim was transported to a state laboratory in Richmond on Monday evening and would take at least 24 hours to analyze.

The state government was told that the Virginia victim had either been an employee of or a contractor for The Sun, Marcus said. He had no details, and he said it wasn't known whether the victim had been in Florida of late or had had direct contact with Blanco or Stevens.

Now we have a possible third case of a disease that hasn't been seen in this country in 27 years (and 18 times in the last 100 -- this can't be stressed enough) in the building where this kid worked . A disease that's been cultivated as a WMD by the enemies we're currently engaged in a war with.

Bingo! There are now 2 and perhaps 3 cases in less than a week. Going beyond 'normal' occurances. These guys are cunning. Had they used a crop duster and there been mass exposure and mass deaths by a WMD, I doubt any nation would have batted an eye if we sent them a nuke. But, by exposing a few people and hoping it spreads in a more slow manner, they will have left enough doubt that some nations may balk at any nuke attempt.

Just as there is a tremendous trail that eventually leads back to bin Laden for the WTC attacks, so too will the anthrax. Making it hard to say bin Laden did it for sure, no fingerprints again, so to speak. And just enough uncertainty for Islamic nations to say 'prove it', once again.

We are a nation of civilized people and we must not loose grip on our sanity, determination, and will when we are presented under these types of circumstances.

Of course not. But we have to see the threat for what it is: very, very real.

I haven't seen much in the way of people wetting themselves, and I don't consider concern -- even grave concern -- to be the least bit fatalistic. We're sharing information, thoughts, fears and opinions about what's happening to our country. That's why we're here. The people who've lost their grip and determination are the ones who've grown bored of the crisis and just don't give a damn anymore -- they're the ones you need to worry about.

Some good and scary points about using a cropduster even right now. Well, time for me to sleep. Lets hope we can wake up tomorrow and realize this was all a very bad dream. Its not normal when tin foil hatters like myself start sounding sane. Its just not the same world anymore.

Please go review the CDC material on Anthrax. If you must, go to the USAMRID website. Thanks. I don't have time to argue with you about the pathophysiology and treatment of this bug. You are correct about Inhalational</b< anthrax. However, the most common forms of anthrax come from skin exposure.

That's why the local doctors in Palm Beach need to be the first responders (and NOT cramming hundreds into a gov't public health facility).

US military site on anthrax vaccine: http://www.anthrax.osd.mil/HTML_interface/default.html

You can read about Anthrax from CDC here: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseaseinfo/anthrax_g.htm

Lastly, If you were sitting on the HMO panel for California, why haven't you done more to correct the CLEAR CUT security problems involved with capitated contracting????? eom for tonight.

We need to give these terrorist the fear of god or at least something very very powerful. They are using weapons of mass destruction on us. Death toll currently over 5,000.

You have to remember these terrorist do not fear death. If they were afraid of death they would not have flew those planes into the buildings.

"You're wrong. There are several different types of anthrax. The timelines for when you must initiate treatment vary with the exposure level. You are hyping out and you've not even been exposed."

Oh, you're a real piece of work alright.

Several types, yeah. The one we're talking about is pulmonary anthrax/inhalation anthrax. 18 cases in past century. Oops, that's 20 now. Or is it 21? So hard to keep up with the numbers.

Anyway, two cases in the past week or two, both in the vicinity of the terrorists -- terrorists who exhibited an interest in cropdusters.

So if you get skin anthrax, then by all means don't sweat it, it won't kill you. But if someone gets pulmonary anthrax, and takes your advice, and dies I hope the spouse/children/parents sue you for every last penny you've got.

And if you think you're protected by some cloak of anonymity, guess again. Your personal information is just two subpoenas away. One to FR to hand over the IP information and timestamp, and another to your ISP to hand over your personal information. Oh, yeah, it happens. Often.

"Don't let a terrorist psyop confuse you."

How can I, when I'm busy countering a "don't-panic" psyop?

DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE HOT HEADS HERE, MOST FREEPERS HAVE BETTER MANORS THEN THAT DON GUY. AND YOUR POST IS RIGHT ON. ITS ONLY WHEN WE PANIC THAT WE WILL FAIL.

I agree. It seems I read that Afghanistan doesn't have the lab facilities for biowarfare. But, alas, we KNOW Saddam does! And we also know there is a link between bin LAden and Saddam, or at least Saddam's son. Maybe this is just what we need to be able to take on Iraq as well.

Thanks, it was starting to get lonely here. :)

(The 'gee, thanks, doc!' atta-boys were starting to seem too much like outtakes from Invasion of the Body Snatchers.)

Nope. Anthrax is not a communicable disease.

I was thinking more along the lines of the *whote powdery substance* they've been talking about. If you get it on your hands and then go for your nose, you are halfway there. THAT is what is scarey, because for most people, it is such a common thing to do. Maybe that is why they found the spores in one guy's nostrils, but it hadn't reached his lungs yet. There is a certain amount of natural protection in the nose. If he were more hairy than is usual, it could very well have saved his life because he most likely did most of his breathing through his mouth.
As I said, I know this sounds gross, but you do have natural filters all over the place.

I'm laughing at you. You sound like a panic striken man. Poor guy. Pop some cipro then. If doctors like me aren't that concerned (and we're the canaries who are gonna go down first in bio or chem warfare), why are you going nuts? You've never treated inhalational anything. Don't lecture me about pneumonias or inhalational anthrax. The reality is that very few people in the entire nation have treated it. BUT, we do know that CIPRO works early on. Otherwise, your beef with me is just lame.

Given that anthrax spores are ubiqutious and persistent, isn't it likely that most rural populations possess at least some antibody to this disease? Is there evidence of background exposure prompting such a response? Is there any indication that antibody of this nature is effective in suppressing low-dose infections?

Just curious.

good analysis. We already know Saddam had lab space and the know-how. He may have found a way to create the formulation used in Florida.

I'll bet that is why we're hearing comments on CNN/etc. about Iraq being a potential target. Maybe the letter to the UN Security Council was to set up action in the near future????

For some reason, I'm thinking about Burger King... "Have it yourrr wayyy"

If/when another inhalation anthrax case shows up which is unrelated to the Florida attack then the panic level will rise considerably. It is diabolically brilliant to be done in small doses since it may make it hard to justify an extreme (ie nuke) response, even if the Saddam is implicated, yet the panic could escalate to a surprising level and have a big economic impact. These people are among the worst to ever live.

"You are correct about Inhalational</b< anthrax. However, the most common forms of anthrax come from skin exposure."

Wow, you're amazing.

I can see you now, at the base of the burning WTC buildings, bodies falling to the ground, reminding us that "There's no reason to panic, folks. Air travel is safer than walking across the street, and tall office buildings are built for safety from the ground up!"

Who TF is even thinking about skin infections???

No one, that's who.

Except for you.

You're really gonna have to work a bit harder at reframing the discussion. I mean, hell, you've only been on FR for a few hours, and you're already sticking out like a sore thumb.

You, my friend, have what was known in the '60s as "cop shoes". "Narcs" would grow long hair, put on flower shirts, bell-bottom pants, and try to mingle with the "freaks".

Only thing is, they forgot to take off their department-issue oxfords.

Oops.

Yeah, "the most common forms of anthrax come from skin exposure", so why are we even discussing pulmonary anthrax?

Oh, because that's what people are coming down with. See how easy it is to forget?

Back to spin-control 101 for you, "Doctor".

I have a generator and more than a few extra shells for the shotgun. All the deer, elk and fish you can eat if this calls for a little time in the woods.
