BREAKING: Anthrax case possible in VIRGINIA
AP Breaking ^ | 10/09/01

Posted on 10/09/2001 12:15:18 AM PDT by cgk

Elsewhere, a state official in Virginia confirmed that health officials there were monitoring a possible case of anthrax at a northern Virginia hospital.

Prince William Hospital in Manassas, Va., contacted the state health department with a possible anthrax diagnosis, "one of several possible diagnoses" for the victim, whose name was not released, said M. Boyd Marcus, Gov. Jim Gilmore's chief of staff. He said a germ culture from the victim was transported to a state laboratory in Richmond on Monday evening and would take at least 24 hours to analyze.

The state government was told that the Virginia victim had either been an employee of or a contractor for The Sun, Marcus said. He had no details, and he said it wasn't known whether the victim had been in Florida of late or had had direct contact with Blanco or Stevens.

We already know Saddam had lab space and the know-how. He may have found a way to create the formulation used in Florida.

If he is, Iraq should cease to be a nation.

It would be such a shame if the perpitrators' countries came down with smallpox and the boubonic plague at the same time. It could happen by accident, what with terrorists handling all of these agents.

"Lastly, If you were sitting on the HMO panel for California, why haven't you done more to correct the CLEAR CUT security problems involved with capitated contracting?????"

Oh, did I really say "California"? My bad.

Hmm, come to think of it, I didn't say it was California.

Oops, that's right. I forgot, it's you again, Spin Doc du Jour, Doctor of Digression, Reframer of the Terms, Flogger of the Strawman.

Is that three strikes yet? I do believe you're out(ted).

I don't know where the "don't pick your nose" idea got started, but it has no factual basis.

I can see you now, at the base of the burning WTC buildings, bodies falling to the ground, reminding us that "There's no reason to panic, folks.

LOL

I'm sorry my house isn't nice enough to impress you. At least I DON'T SCREAM EVERYTHING I SAY.

"Nope. Anthrax is not a communicable disease."

"I was thinking more along the lines of the *whote powdery substance* they've been talking about."

OK, that's what you were "thinking about".

Here's what you were talking about:

"Anthrax patient sneezes on keyboard and zoom... it spreads..."

Don't you dare try to pull that kind of stunt again, OK? People's lives are at stake, dammit!

You make an absurd claim, I debunk it, and then you "correct" me by trying to claim you said something entirely different?

Nice try.

You might be right, but the animals would have to have it around. My understanding (and I'm not a vet and I don't practice in rural America) is that most US farmers would not be exposed to this.

Inhalational anthrax is called Woolsorter's Disease because the British livestock handlers would pick up this germ from the wool.

A few years ago I attempted to locate a stockpile of the Anthrax Vaccine (when Clinton kept shooting his mouth off about this threat with NO PLANS in place to address it).

I couldn't get it. The company refused to release it to me because of the priority for the Gulf. Oh well. I see the need to protect the military first, but my calls to local politicians went unresponded. Now, just like missile defense, we're all sitting ducks.

Stupid isn't it? We could have immunized these people years ago. But, the US has only ONE SUPPLIER of vaccine and rumor has it that the FDA SHUT DOWN the vaccine supplier last year (because they claimed the production line wasn't up to their newest standard (passed in 1999?)) Beats me what the technical specs are ... but the suits closed down the line last year.

So DOD had to slow down immunization of US armed forces (because the stockpile was so low).

As you can tell, I tend to blame Clinton for alot.

First you said this...

The treatment for anthrax is well-established.

Later this...

The reality is that very few people in the entire nation have treated it.

Which is it.
Still waiting for the LA (California seems to be on your mind) treatment center info.

I don't understand how anthrax can't be communicable. Bear with my logic, but say you have the spores or bacteria in your nasal passages and you sneeze. If the bacteria or spores are dislodged and sprayed by your sneeze are they no longer communicable because they have been in your nasal passage for hours/days? Do the spores become bacteria immediately upon inhalation and are at that point only deadly to host? The nasal swab on mailroom worker revealed anthrax "spores". This was some time after exposure. The spores had not yet evolved into the bacteria.

Anyway, two cases in the past week or two, both in the vicinity of the terrorists -- terrorists who exhibited an interest in cropdusters.

There is only ONE case of Anthrax, another where a person was exposed (no symptoms, though he's under observation...). If we're going to panic needlessly, let's panic needlessly while getting our facts straight. ;-)

apologies... I am at home and do not have that info available.

Medical Offices send such kits to their local lab (and it is the responsibility of that lab office to pass it to the appropriate testing facility).

County would likely be called because it's probable (though I can not say for certain) that gov't labs are the best at diagnosing this germ.

Do you know about transmission by ingestion of infected animals? Now that I asked it, throw in the other likely pathogens. It would seem useful information.

Bingo! There are now 2 and perhaps 3 cases in less than a week. Going beyond 'normal' occurances.

Ahem... may I point out that, if I read this article correctly, there are perhaps four cases... note mention of another possible down in Florida...

Keep calm, everyone. If anyone should be getting worried, it's me. I live in Northern Virginia!

Hell, I'm there. I'll bring the fire wood and stop at the local army/navy on the way out.

It sure beats watching Aaron Brown on CNN !

Heck, we ought to all go hunting at the same time... that would be funny. These terrorists would be running around the cities while we are out BBQ'ing deer on a fire!

I can see you guys now... Binoculars trained on a major city... "yep, Jeb, there they go again, pass me another jerky."

"I'm laughing at you. You sound like a panic striken man."

Yeah, sure, sure, whatever, "Doc".

I sound panic driven?

Curious, since I live in an area with a zero-percent attraction to terrorists, and thus, a zero-percent probability of coming in contact with anthrax.

Nice textbook work, though, I commend you. When debunked, attack the character of the debunker rather than try to argue an unwinnable argument.

But hey, you already struck out, so I'm gonna have to grade your effort with an F.

"why are you going nuts?"

Why are you making mental health evaluations over the internet? Do you hold your license in such low regard? Remember, munchkin, two subpoenas...

"Don't lecture me about pneumonias or inhalational anthrax."

OK, let's strike a deal then. You stop lecturing me on how it's a sound medical decision to avoid taking antibiotics for inhalational antrax until after symptoms appear, and I'll stop lecturing you on your BS.

Deal, pard?

"we do know that CIPRO works early on"

Ah, backpedaling so soon? You're barely neck-deep in the quicksand, I was hoping you'd keep struggling for a while. After all, very few types of soil are "quicksand", and there's no need to worry, since so few people actually fall into it, right?

But, I digress. (And that's your job anyway.)

Yes, "CIPRO works early on". The problem is your bogus definition of "early on".

Dear sir, If you are that concerned about it, go take some Cipro...otherwise you're missing my entire point. I'm not trying to belittle your comments.

I am trying to get you to be in the proper perspective. If you haven't been exposed to middle eastern guys with powder coming from their mail, why are you so panicked?

Go take some Cipro. It's 500 mg twice per day.

You may not have wanted that vaccine. My understanding is that it contained a powerful adjuvant: Squalene. That adjuvant is a prime candidate for what might have produced the symptoms associated with Gulf War Syndrome. My brother, an MD/PhD viral immunologist at Case/Western, says that the Squalene theory is a likely candidate explanation, given the range of symptoms presented.
