My father was "profoundly hard-of-hearing", not deaf. In his case it was a childhood disease (Mumps?) that caused it.

He was still able to get through medical school--at a time before the transistor, when "hearing aids" were the size of a table radio--and aids like amplified stethoscopes were unheard-of.

Hope Rush can overcome, too.

Vicodin useage can cause deafness

Only if you jam them into your ears. Opiates do not cause hearing loss.

You are wrong about vicodin...

and I am not saying that Rush uses vicodin - I don't know if he does

but it is linked to haering loss...

Misuse of Pain Drug Linked to Hearing Loss

Deafness: Doctors in L.A. and elsewhere have identified at least 48 cases tied to prolonged misuse of Vicodin and other comparable prescription medicines.

"The lack of information is what I’m most furious about. That, and the proclivity of doctors to write prescriptions for Vicodin like it’s candy."

-- CHRISTINA JAEGER By LINDA MARSA, TIMES HEALTH WRITER

A powerful and potentially addictive painkiller used by millions of Americans is causing rapid hearing loss, even deafness, in some patients who are misusing the drug, according to hearing researchers in Los Angeles and elsewhere.

REST OF STORY...

Contrast the way Rush is handling it with Christopher Reeve. He isn't running around demanding government money for fetal stem-cell research or carrying on as a poster-child for the "disabled." Instead, he quietly takes it like a man and fights back with all he's got.

You asked: "Did we give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?...."

You are culturally deprived. You have never viewed "Animal House".(?)

This is awful news. Rush has been the single most important voice of American conservatism since 1988. I hope the docs can stop the progression of the deafness. Stay strong, big guy. We love ya.

WORLD'S MOST-LISTENED TO VOICE ANNOUNCES: I AM DEAF; RUSH LIMBAUGH VOWS TO CONTINUE

In mid-career, musical magician Beethoven went deaf. He would continue to write. Producing some of his best music.

"I have lost my ability to hear, but i have not lost my ability to communicate," the modern world's most-listened to voice, Rush Limbaugh, announced to his radio audience on Monday.

Immediate shock spread throughout the communication industry.

Rush is a real American, he will find a way to overcome this and go on with his life.

As he was describing his hearing loss, I sent him a e-mail about cochlear implants because a friend's son had one done last year and it was very successful. About 3 minutes after I sent it Rush mentioned it himself. Sounds like he's finding out about on the best treatments for his condition.

I agree with you. This is very sad. I know it's small consolation, but at least he has his mind. He will be able to write, if nothing else. Poor President Reagan can't even do that.

Please, sir, if I want my mind poisoned I'll go over to the poison Web site myself. There is no need to bring that garbage here.

Shalom.

Too much listening to himself?

Somtimes I can't hear him either.

Recently I've been less of a fan, even finding him tiresome at times. But that can never take away his incomparable achievement of giving an articulate, reasoned, and intelligent voice to conservative views. This is a human tragedy, and I wish him well.

I know Clymers who are going to complain that he didn't loose his voice as well.

How about all the NON-vile people who have been CONCERNED about his "voice change," not convinced by his claims that it wasn't there, and who have been fans for over eleven years and counting? How would you guess WE feel?

I'm not sure of your point. There have been plenty of legitimate inquiries into Rush's health over the past months. I'm sure NOBODY would have the slightest problem telling the difference between the two.

So sad to hear this. Hopefully Rush can work around this disability. We really need his voice at this time. He'll be in my prayers.

This sad news is heartbreaking. I join all of you in ardent prayer asking that Rush and his family be given the stregnth to endure this adversity. As a fellow broadcaster, Rush is one of the paragons who has set the standard and model for me, and countless others, in the industry. Godspeed.

I'm one who assumed Rush was affecting an accent, and I posted a couple of snide wisecracks. Who would have expected a man his age to develop hearing problems?

If it is all true of course I withdraw the remarks, and wish Rush a full and speedy recovery.
