I think the sign of God is not the cross itself, but the response to it by the men who needed the symbol of hope to keep going.

Yes! Haven't we all had those times of great need, when we found comfort and strength to keep going, from some smallest "sign." And the fact is, that God is constantly giving us signs of His love and care. It's just that we're not always picking up on them so well. (Just speaking for myself here.)

Are you speaking God's intentions for us? We'd prefer His inspiration. Is it not marvellous that it broke off in 4 places that gave it the dimensions of THE cross on which Christ and others, who respected him, died?

This cross in the ruins of the World Trade Center is just such a sign -- a remnant of a heinous crime, but it is nonetheless a sign from God, even if in your distress and anger you must reject it as such.

What is an example of a bad sign from God?

The cross is not a sign

WOW! You sound so sure of this. Did God tell you this? Inquiring minds want to know.

Shudder, let's at least have a non-Romantic Period, Biblically accurate, angel: they were all in the form of men except for the ones that were mixtures of animals and eyes and other weird stuff, not willowy consumptives.

One reason could be that one of the workers made a sign saying: "God's House" and put it at the "entrance" of the Tower rubble they were working on, because of the large number of bodies they were finding.

He said, his group was working and when they looked up, they saw the "cross" with a shaft of light shining on it. They were all overcome with it all. He was a pretty tough guy from New Jersey, so it must have been a pretty powerful sight.

Anyway, don't flame me, I'm just saying that this isn't a sign of God, it's a sign of
Architectural Engineering, which I suppose is a minor discipline of God
and Physics.....

No Flames.
I was raised in the fairly austere mainstream Church of Christ tradition...lots of
no-nonsense engineers in our oil-town congregation.
They and I'd probably take the stance that you've proposed.

But if this cross of metal brings people comfort (and some discomfiture to the
ACLU)...it's fine by me!

And if they find a mesh of beams that look like a Star of David or a relic
sacred to other survivors...put it up.

In the Hebrew Scriptures and Writings whenever the children of Israel experienced plague or attack, they saw it as a sign from God that they needed to repent and humble themselves before God. Anything bad that came upon them they took as a warning and a notice from God to put right their relationship with the Holy One of Israel.

But the point of a 'sign from God' or a 'sign of God' is not whether or not it bespeaks blessing or curse, is good or bad -- rather a 'sign from God' is meant to draw God's people right back to God.

I am not talking about dogma or doctrine here, just a general principle -- if it brings people closer to God, draws them back to God, affirms their sense of God in their life -- then it can be regarded as a sign from God.

That's a beautiful explanation. I'm not a Catholic either and I'm happy to learn that. Thank you.

Will make a nice addition to the memorial site, but really, what are the odds that there was a cross-brace beam configuration somewhere in a skyscraper. Pretty high!
I mean, it's not built on independent 1000 foot poles, ya know. They're all tied together by something under tension or the thing would accordian down to start with.

Anyway, don't flame me, I'm just saying that this isn't a sign of God, it's a sign of Architectural Engineering, which I suppose is a minor discipline of God and Physics.....

The sign of G~d is in the people's hearts response, the hope and belief with which they found cross. They were calling and were answered.

It will make a wonderful addition to the memorial site.

Be Well,

Toni
