A 53-year-old man died in an early morning house fire in southeast Houston today.
The man, whose name has not yet been released [I confirmed that this was, indeed, my FRiend, Herb Meadows, known to all of us on FRee Republic by his screen name, "CHIEF negotiator"] was found by Houston firefighters in a bathroom in the rear of his home in the 8000 block of Glencrest, after the house burned about 1:30 a.m.
Firefighters said the man's wife told them she was watching television in the home's living room when she heard a loud pop and her husband shouting from the back of the home.
The woman tried unsuccessfully to rescue her husband, firefighters said. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation symptoms.
Firefighters said it appeared the man tried to get out of the burning home, but the heavy smoke entered the bathroom, where he collapsed.
Arson investigators are at the scene of the fire this morning looking for its cause.
Have you noticed how many people have recalled that the CHIEF Negotiator was one of the first people they encountered here? What a testament to his influence in making this forum hospitable to the many, many people who have joined this wonderful little piece of Web political enlightenment and chaos over the last four years! CHIEF made Newbies feel at home and part of the crew. Hey ... the first two people I remember contact with here are Billie and the CHIEF. Billie appreciated my compliment of her unflattering graphic of Hillary and the CHIEF nicely explained to me that patience and faith were a virtue, and therefore I had no need to hit the reply button more than once! LOL. What a damned shame he's gone.
Holy Spirit give comfort to family and loved ones.

Hail to the CHIEF!
If I had only known
It was the last walk in the rain
I keep you out for hours in the storm
I would hold your hand
Like a life line to my heart
Underneath the thunder we be warm
If I had only known
It was the last walk in the rain
If I had only known
I'd never hear your voice again
I'd memorize each thing you ever said
And on those lonely nights
I could think of them once more
Keep the words alive inside my head
If I had only known
I'd never hear your voice again
You were the treasure in my hand
You were the one who always stood beside me
So unaware
I'd foolished believe you would always be there
But then there came that day
And I turned my head
And you slipped away
If I had only known
It was my last nite by your side
I pray a miracle to stop the dawn
And when you smiled at me
I would look into your eyes
And make sure you know
My love for you goes on and on
If I had only known
If I had only known
The love I would have shown
If I had only known
REBA
My condolences to his wife, children and grandchildren.
