POST BOOMERS/PRE X - finally, a thread just for us - Thread 2

Posted on 10/02/2001 10:38:59 AM PDT by WIMom

Last night, there was an anti baby boom thread that started with a rant, and before some disruptor trashed it, some of us who were born at the tail end of the baby boom - from 1956 to 1964 - were having some nice recollections. The things that we seem to have in common are the following:

1. We were too young to serve in Vietnam, but remember the news.

2. As far as we're concerned, the music, television and popular entertainment and heroes of the 60s were and still are a matter for personal taste, and don't represent the shining apex of all civilization, icons to be revered by generations to come - in short, the Beatles were just a band that some might not like, and old Trek was cheesy and not well written.

3. Old boomers came into adulthood at the ideal economic circumstance - we've had to work for ours.

4. Our clothes and music tended to be lighthearted, and we are more conservative/libertarian as a whole than the older boomers.

So post your memories of tunes, movies, shows, fashions, school stuff, etc.

And enjoy yourselves!

This is probably the best thread I have been on in weeks. Just what we needed. Great idea, one (you don't mind if I call you one?)

Okay so I'll pick up where I left off:

'61 class of '79 here.

Monty Python came on the public tv station (after 10:00p.m. because the humor was considered too risque' for prime time). My friends and I absolutely LIVED for it. The next day at school we would repeat/act out every line. Great stuff.

Had several Pink Floyd albums on 8-track: "...And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes------WHIRRRRRR---WHIRRRR--CLICK--CLICK----...I'll see you on the dark side of the moon."

The other day I asked my 14 year old daughter to pick up the phone and 'dial a number' for me. She said, "What do you mean by 'dial'?"

What, ME worry? (Alfred E. Neuman's motto) Do you remember SICK magazine? CRACKED magazine?

I also remember sneaking to listen to my dad's old REDD FOXX and MOMS MABLEY records. Back then that was some very BLUE stuff that they did.

Do you remember having to turn the television on a few minutes ahead of time, to let the 'tubes warm up'?

That first Boston tour was the first concert I ever went to, first time I ever got drunk, first time I ever was around, um, burning substances....

Smoking weed at a Boston concert? If that isn't a pure 70's moment, I don't know what is!

This post is not intended to promote drug use.

Monty Python is great! Did you ever watch the credits on the "Holy Grail" movie? What a hoot!

I'm sorry but Jimmy Buffet is absolutely terrible! In addition to his music being subpar, he is a flaming liberal.

I believe he was on the Gore Florida campaign in 2000 and prior to the November election, he held a concert for Gore.

Here is something from a Buffet web site:
Jimmy to Perform at Democratic Fund Raiser Aug 4th, 2000 - 7:00 am Edt

Variety reports: "The importance of electing Al Gore in this year's election got me to return to concert production one last time," says Miramax Films co-chairman Harvey Weinstein. He's partnered in yet another gala for the Gore campaign.

This one's "The Concert," Sept. 14 at Radio City Music Hall, for the Democratic National Committee. Weinstein's teamed with Jann Wenner and John Sykes to present this concert featuring Jimmy Buffett, Bette Midler, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Lenny Kravitz, Sheryl Crow, Jon Bon Jovi, Macy Gray, Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Timothy B. Schmit who will perform songs by the Eagles -- plus name presenters

Tickets for the event range from $125 to $100. Ticket info is available at Democrats.org: Concert at Radio City Music Hall Honoring Vice President Al Gore or call 212-597-9114.

From the Wall of Sound article "Stars to Fête Al Gore": "I just like participating in democracy," said Buffett in a statement Thursday. "That might sound corny to people, but I think I'm lucky to be included in things like this that might make people's lives better."

..Going to the drive-in in pajamas...

We did this too! About time somebody mentioned it.

..Chatty Cathy..

Another one I was ready to mention! My parents went all over town to find me a black one and they finally did. I was so glad because I just had to have that doll. Because I could only have black dolls I never played "Barbies" until her black friend, Francie, came out around 67-68.

What a timely thread!

I turned 38 yesterday. I thought about the terror sex and the anticipated baby boom the news people are talking about. I was a Cuban Missile Crisis baby. My Dad was at MacDill AFB in Tampa navigating the planes with the "big as cars" nukes on board.

When you look in my baby book there are several large clippings of JFK and John-John. I was a new-born when he was killed.

My kindergarten year we were stationed at Clark AFB in the Phillippines. My Dad was always meeting my Uncles and cousins on their way to Viet Nam. They'd have a drink together at the officer's club. I remember our house being tear gassed in the middle of the night. We think one of our guys had gotten out of hand at the local bar. The MP's subdued him with gas but the breeze carried it to us. We had a 15 year old live-in nanny. She raised us while my Mom had a nervous break down.

I'm sure y'all had the same experiences.

30 years ago we moved to South Carolina and things are tame. I still have my bicentennial Schwinn 10 speed. I remember Kiddles and Crissie dolls, and dressing preppy and drinking beer legally at 18.

I visited the WTC when I participated in an exchange program with Manhassett HS. They knew about grits but boiled peanuts and southern style BBQ were a surprise.

Ooo! This is so much fun!

1964 here (vintage year it was)

So many of my memories have been mentioned. A few others are......

- The Carol Burnett Show
- my Beautiful Chrissy doll who had hair that you pulled from her head
- wax gum (along with the poprocks & wacky packages)
- staying up late to see Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show
- vinyl go-go boots and Lip Smackers
- the first Rocky and Jaws and this this amzing new movie like none other, Star Wars
- Captain Kirk and David Cassidy (sigh)
- not wearing seatbelts and thinking nothing of it
- My first concert: John Denver
- HR Puffinstuff, The Bugaloos and Sigmund the Sea Monster

Oh and does anyone remember the shows Nightstalker and Cliffhangers???

Shadows grow so long before my eyes
And they're moving across the page
Suddenly the day turns into night
Far away from the city
