Gun sale resurgence: Americans saying with wallet, "We feel safer when armed"

Scripps Howard News Service

Keeping up with the changes in the political landscape as America girds for war could give a person whiplash. The old bedrock assumptions about defense and domestic spending, rights to "privacy" and the operation of law enforcement, even opinions on criminal profiling, are changing with lightning speed.

So, too, has there been another, perhaps little-noted shift: our view of guns. I should say the fashionable circle's view of guns. After all, there are some 200 million firearms in the United States, the vast majority of which are legally owned.

Nevertheless, every time there is any kind of an assault with firearms against innocents, we inevitably hear that more gun control is the "answer" because, according to these folks, guns are the root of all crime and mayhem. Usually there's an attempt, often successful, at more gun-control initiatives.

Then came the horror of Sept. 11. What few have ventured to point out is that in this entire calamitous crime, throughout this act of war and terrorism like our country has never seen before, not a single gun was used. So much for seeing guns as the problem, and gun control as the solution.

Americans want to feel safer, and they want to protect their children, which is why this time they are emptying gun stores, fast. Six eastern states, presumably those with populations who feel most vulnerable as a result of the recent attacks and including several, such as New York, that have lead the way in strictly controlling guns, report that gun sales are soaring. And don't you know that more than a few of the purchasers, who would have been aghast at such a thought just a few weeks ago, are sheepishly purchasing them?

No, guns may not exactly protect their carriers against terrorists - then again, they might - but people are voting with their wallets. And they are saying they feel safer with guns than with those who would "protect" them by limiting or ending their ability to get a firearm. We may be witnessing a change from "gun as menace" to "gun as marvel" mentality. Consider the call for sky marshals on airlines, and now the plea from the Airline Pilots Association that pilots be allowed to pack heat during flights. I'm not exactly sure how the pilots would both fend off hijackers with a firearm and fly the plane, but I think the larger point is one of deterrence.

People everywhere, including criminals and even suicidal hijackers, at some level make rational calculations. If the hijackers had thought for a moment that anyone on the plane was at all likely to be armed and ready to use a gun, they almost certainly would not have attempted their deed, simply out of knowledge their plot would fail.

Talk of arming pilots and the extent to which we're putting air marshals on planes may be one reason they will almost certainly not attempt this particular route of terrorism again. They will likely try other avenues to terrorism against which guns may not deter.

But the larger point is that in times of peace and prosperity, society has the luxury of turning down its collectively turned-up nose on those who would protect themselves and their families with firearms. But in time of war, reality and self-preservation surface.

When the smoke clears, we'll notice something else on the new political landscape: that it will be a long, long time before Gun Control Inc. dares to advocate curbs on the Second Amendment again.

Four guns in four cockpits could have saved over 6,000 lives. Just think about it all you gun grabbing politicians.

If you think a pilot with a gun is dangerous, just remember one thing. He is already in control of a 300,000 lb. missile traveling faster than a 45 cal. bullet at muzzle velocity.

I might buy some airline stock if they would carpet the entrance of the terminals, ticket counter areas, loading ramps, and airplanes with pig skin. It would also help if they required all passengers to smear a little hog lard on their foreheads and forearms in order to fly on the planes. Or....., they could just allow the second amendment to work.

I'm going to get flamed for saying this, but I don't like the glock trigger safety setup. ANYTHING that pushes on the trigger will fire it, branch, key, pen, holster, etc.. Beretta 92FS is good. I like something more powerful than a 9mm, so I got a H&K USP Compact .357 SIG. The .357 SIG round is kinda, a 9mm bullet in a .40 case.
Head for the range and rent as many pistols as you can, and try them out to see what you like.

No armed pilot is going to 'fend off' anybody, if they pull out a gun, they will shoot to kill.

Now we have to convince our government and our President to stop dithering around with Handgun Control's "solutions" and allow our pilots to be armed, and maybe a few passengers, too.

Got it down to two either a Glock 17 or Beretta 92, I am leaning towards the Beretta, comments and advice welcomed.

I just bought myself a new Glock 27 yesterday. I had absolutely no intention of acquiring another weapon just yet, but I accompanied my boyfriend to the gun shop, because he had bought a new shotgun and needed to have it transferred from the dealer across the state to the local dealer.

They had exactly one Glock 27 (40 cal.) available, and it's exactly what I've been wanting. I made the mistake of asking to look at it, and as soon as I had my hands on it I knew I couldn't walk out of the store without it.

Here in Florida, if you have CCW there's no waiting period. So I came home with my shiny new Glock in hand. Today we went out to where we have our range set up and blasted away like Cuban revolutionaries. It was great!!!!!

P.S. My previous carry gun was a Beretta .32 Tomcat. The frame has cracked in 3 places and it is even now on its way to Beretta, where hopefully they will just replace the thing.

Must have been a great week for the dealers, indeed. I had only one thing left on my wish list, and picked it up a few days ago, and spent a happy day at the range.

A nice cuddly Colt Combat Commander MKIV in Stainless. Now I gotta buy 45ACP dies, a new turret, and a thousand primers.

We sat back thinking that
the government would, and could protect us, they didn't, and
they can't, we must do it ourselves!!!

Both are fine weapons. No way to go wrong with either. The Beretta has a three-year warranty, while the Glock holds only a one-year. Something to think about. The Beretta also holds the lead in accuracy over the Glock.

There are lots of threads on FR about, what gun should I buy for........ Here's a home defense thread with links to other threads. Or....

"A well-regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." - Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

Congress has provided (Article I - Section. 8, U.S. Constitution) the Militia with a means to arm themselves: CMP (Civilian Markmenship Program).

Luke 22:36 (KJV) --Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

Got sword? (M1 Garand ==>CMP)

.. Beretta 92FS is good.

The one that caught my eye was the 92D

I like something more powerful than a 9mm,

I also considered a .45 but wasn't looking for another career, and I thought I would be able to become more proficent faster with 9mm.

Head for the range and rent as many pistols as you can, and try them out to see what you like.

Wish it was that easy, but I live here in occupied New Jersey and that does not seem possible. Thanks

I just arrived back home from purchasing a Mossberg 590 DA. While going through the
usual rigmarole when purchasing firearms in California, the salesman let out a chuckle and pointed to a number
on my paper work.

He pointed to a number and said, "There are a lot of people buying guns in California
today." As of 5PM, there were close to 1300 shotguns or rifles purchased. He went on to tell me that usually
the number is in the mid hundreds on any given day. will allow me to pick it up.

Can't wait to go shootin'. Of course, I'll have to wait 10 days before the State
will allow me to pick it up.
