NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Young children exposed to country music score lower on IQ tests than kids raised on rock 'n' roll, declares controversial music professor Dr. Roger Solett - and he bases his startling claim on the results of a study of 1,000 kids!
"Country music makes kids stupid," he said. "It's the mind- warping lyrics." And he cited a few examples drawn from what he called "some of the most popular country songs of the past two decades." On the list:
"I'd Rather Have a Bottle in Front of Me Than a Frontal Lobotomy."
"Get Your Tongue Outta My Mouth 'Cause I'm Kissin' You Goodbye."
"If You Wanna Keep Your Beer Cold, Put It Next to My Ex-wife's Heart."
Dr. Solett is the former director of the prestigious Chopin Symphony and a professor of music. He said he and his research team gave IQ tests to 500 6-year-olds whose parents played country music in the house or car daily.
"They're Billy Ray Cyrus, Faith Hill, Clint Black, Randy Travis, Garth Brooks fans - and their children scored, on average, 10 points lower on standard IQ tests than 500 6-year-olds whose parents are rock 'n' roll junkies," said Dr. Solett.
"Now what's the difference between rock and country? It's just wild people banging on drums and strumming guitars in both cases. Lots of howling. Lots of noise. The only difference between rock and country is that country is stupid - the lyrics, I mean.
" 'I wanna whip your cow . . . I fell on a pile of you and got love all over me . . . Drop-kick me, Jesus, through the goalposts of life' . . . I mean, c'mon, this kinda stuff'll warp your mind."
But Dr. Solett's controversial study, and particularly his views, are not shared by many, if any, of his peers. And a member of his own research team, who asked to remain anonymous, told Weekly World News, "He hates hick music with a passion."

My great uncle was one of the Playboys. We used to have family "hoe downs" in my great grandmother's living room. I was a kid at the time and thought it was just so UNcool. Too bad I did not appreciate it until I was older, and those things did not happen anymore.

And when they resort to Lilith Fair fluff stuff (i.e., most of the chicks), I stick in the George Strait tapeNow don't EVEN start dissing the Chicks!! "The iced tea tastes fine to me Earl!" "Is it dark in that trunk, Earl?"
I laughed my head off watching the Country Music Awards this year when the Chicks sang "Sin Wagon" I thought Vince Gill was gonna fall off the stage he was laughing so hard because the lyrics talked about 'mattress dancin'!

There seems to be a lot of self-proclaimed "high IQ country music fans" on this thread who, by seriously questioning the scientific merits of an article in "The Weekly World News", are actually validating the bogus study.
(Must be Garth fans 8-)

Yep I know alot of chicks who get a kick outta poor ol' Earl. Somethin' Thelma-n'-Louisian about it though, hits me the wrong way... And it weren't the iced tea, it were the beans.

That is such bull s***... i am a senior and i just started getting heavily into the country music style... it turns out that i am doing my best ever...
country music is free, and easy to listen to... and especially modern country music... its not stupid and its not going to make people stupid...
basically what i got out of the essay was that whoever wrote it was obviously a very black man... i mean... yes i admit that a lot of country has no point to it... for example Big & Rich's Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy... it has no point... but its a fun song...
would you rather let your children listen to songs with violence and "bitches", "40s", "cocaine", "weed", and Ebonics? or something that comes from the heart or the mind of someone who actually has talent?
country music doesn't make kids stupid... rap music make kids stupid... its that goddamn rap that is f**king up this country's youth...
one time... sit down and listen to the song "The Angry American" by Toby Kieth... if thats not a good song by one of the best country singers ever... i don't know what is... I have nothing against rock and roll... in fact i was raised on it and still listen to it now...
but country music does not deserve to be made fun of... if you think about it... it was the first original American music style... and country music is the most patriotic music there is...
so whatever you have against country music... u might as well drop it... cause if country music makes you stupid i must have been an extremely smart person before cause i just kicked your stupid point right in the ass

Low IQ people could be attracted to C&W rather than C&W causing low IQ, etc. Smile when you say that, pilgrim.

Never heard that one, but the one I like is his You Never Even
Called Me By My Name, by the late, great Steve Goodman,
with the add-on "perfect" country & western song.

I site as examples, "She's my cherry pie" - Warrant and "Eat the rich" - Aerosmith. I'll give you the cheesy warrant crap but I think you meant the song Eat the Rich by Motorhead. I'm not knocking Motorhead, I love them, but Lemmy's lyrics can be silly:
Come on baby, eat the rich,
Put the bite on the son of a bitch,
Don't mess up, don't you give me no switch
C'mon baby and eat the rich,
C'mon baby and eat the rich
