We Need You
United State Coast Guard Auxillary ^ | september 17, 2001 | United State Coast Guard Auxillary

We Need You -- In the wake of the recent attacks on the United States, the Coast Guard Auxiliary will be called upon to provide essential services to the Coast Guard as they focus more heavily on their military missions.  We will need all the help we can get.  You needn't own a boat or even be an experienced boater, since our missions are wide-ranging.  For information about existing Auxiliary missions and the Auxiliary in general, go to our Join the Auxiliary webpage.  You will find there a form through which you can ask that a local Auxiliarist make contact with you to explore the ways in which you can assist Team Coast Guard and, in the process, do something for our country in its hour of need.

I talked to our local coast guard station yesterday. The Auxillary has been activated in Monterey and they are setting up an office in the coast guard station there. You do not need a boat to help. The Auxillary will supply valuable training in communications and other areas in return for volunteering. This training can be helpful in the event of a disaster or maybe even in your everday life. There are Coast Guard Stations and Auxillaries on the coast and inland on our lakes and rivers. If you have already donated blood, or are looking for other ways to help America make it through this dangerous time, here is a tangible thing you can do to help.

Bump! Let folks you know that there is truly a need here. In the San Francisco Bay area, since the Alameda NAS was shut, we viritually have no marine defense system.

Just this year the Coast Guard made the decision to cut back on personnell to free up money to upgrade their aging fleet of vessels. They are the only coastline defense we have on the Pacific between San Diego and Seattle, and they are undermanned, and many times are captaining 30 to 40 year old vessels. They are very much in need of support from the civilian population. If you can help, click on the link to contact the Auxillary.

Good idea... There's the Civil Air Patrol too. And many of you not otherwise qualified to bear arms (due to age or disability) may be able to fill positions in your State Defense forces -- these serve a valuable mission of both providing physical security for the state as well as relieving the National Guard of many of it's normal maintenance duties should Guard units be federalized and sent out of state.

The Auxillary told me they would train folks in communications. They set up radio relays when phones and internet are down. They also can use help in their offices with adminstration and other duties.

Not at all! There are many different things that need doing. Most of the people I know of in the CG AUX and Navy League are at least your age or older.

Many officers on our police forces and fire fighters are Reservists in the military. Give your local station a call to see if you can help fill in.

Thanks for the info- oddly, that's what my Dad belonged to in WWII, being too old for normal service!

Nope, no age limit. Just some time and patriotic spirit is all that's necessary. I don't know about the time, but you certainly do not have any deficit in the patriotic spirit department!
