The "Pacifists" are coming out of the woodwork
campus bulletin boards ^ | 17 Sept 2001 | unknown juvenile twits

Okay, my first question is-- WHO DO THEY THINK THEY'RE KIDDING?! Let me put this into context: this is the text of a flyer that's being posted around the campus where I attend graduate school:

WAR IS TERRORISM

Contact your Congressmen and speak out against unneeded and violent retaliation. The lives of foreign peoples [sic] and US soldiers will not bring back those lost in the recent tragedy in New York.
For more information about US foreign policy and the events that have taken place in the US and abroad, refer to the following websites:
www.indymedia.org
www.zmag.org
www.wtowatch.org
www.globalexchange.org
www.wto.org
www.protest.net
www.slashdot.org
Throughout the 20th Century violence and military might has been used to curb international terrorism. It hasn't worked. We need a new solution for a new century. Let's show that America has learned something from Vietnam, from Libya, from Iraq, from Israel, and Afghanistan.
Above all, don't listen to CNN and the major news networks. They say we are at war. They say that this is the new Pearl Harbor. Inform yourself. Terrorism is not new. Learn from the mistakes of the past.
Keep yourself informed and inform Congress in turn. The only way we can prevent needless violence is through active protest.
[emphasis mine]

I won't even address the appalling sentence structure and composition (and this is one of the better schools... sheesh...)-- that last line gets me. What, d'ya think suicidal religious fanatics are going to pay attention to a few flyers and some nude picketing?! The sheer assininity of kids these days floors me... Didn't bother to check out the links, but I speculate it's more of the same...

So my question to the rest of y'all is, how much anti-war rhetoric have you come across so far?

I agree. Hubby told me tonight on campus there was a retired master sergeant from special forces talking about "giving peace a chance" and we shouldn't retaliate, blah, blah, blah. He couldn't get over that.

Told my hubby I was gonna be ticked if we didn't retaliate and let those jerks get away with this...like Clinton did for 8 years. I am not in a good mood over this and I have no patience right now for these liberal give peace a chance types.

"Yep! The WTO has cancelled everything for the DC protest and all. We're happy out here about that. The protestors started bailing out last week according to our local TV station. "

The original projections of the number of protesters were up to 100,000. But as I said in my previous post there still may be 10-20 thousand to show up. NPR gave a liberal amount of time to one protester who ranted on in a '60's style diatribe about peace and war, killing of innocents (enemy), and sundry other subjects.

patriotism shown here in Vermont

I'm surprised, gun-lovah... I don't mean to bash your state, but y'all got ahelluvalota super-enlightened a$$hole progressive types up there... Check out any institution of higher education and I bet you'll find your dissenters though. These people take for granted what others have spilled their blood for.

Dropping those weighty physics textbooks on 'em from the 5th floor dorm room, huh? ( ;

Naaaaah, some of these kids are so dense they wouldn't know the Wigner-Eckhart theorem if it hit 'em in the head...

Actually I've never lived in the cattlepens, even when I was an undergrad... Too many stupid kids getting in the way of my schedule. I'm one a them free spirits. I like it that I can trash my place as much as I want and nobody comes in at some ungodly hour and screams at me to clean up the beer and pizza sauce off the ceiling.

(That's Priest in Name Only and if you're offended, well you know what you can do.)

Haha, I might be if I were Catholic but I don't give a sh$t... I read about Drinan on some other thread and frankly he's the one who needs something shoved up where the sun don't shine. And not just an enema.

I think that many who might be perceived as "left radical" might be better characterized as "simple and (sorry for the cliche) brainwashed". Many of these kids who go out and embrace leftist causes are driven by peer pressure or by misguided notions about intellectualism. Sorry to keep harping on that, but I've had it up my Republican a$$ about how my conservative ideology is anachronistic, backwards, hopelessly outdated, simple-minded, stupid, and indicative of inbreeding in my family. Etc etc etc. And nobody can give me a straight answer why, for example, it's so much "better" to try to rehabilitate murderers rather than take away their last and ultimate rights. Or why violent retaliation isn't couth when dealing with suicidal religious fanatics who hate our guts, want to destroy us, and don't play by any civilized rules.

Most people buckle when someone calls them a backwoods redneck hick conservative. Me, I'm too stoooopid to back down.

Dont give me that crap Maxwell, you're just too lazy to do it.

Yeah well, you come over here and find all the g--d--- electrical shorts in my energy analyzer apparatus then, and I'll go plaster the campus.

I do think the juxtaposition of that poster with a simple "Support Our Troops" banner would look good though... If you were around here, dude, I'd roust your a$$ out and we'd get a couple cases of Miller Lite and rev up the staple guns...

real pacifists like the Amish who have a deep and abiding and consistently pricipled opposition to violence

Hmmmm... This opens up a can of worms for me. I believe that their doctrines are deeply flawed, and-- very quickly, 'cause I need a nicotine fix like you wouldn't believe-- that they take advantage of the freedoms and liberties that the spilled blood of others affords them, whilst at the same time condemning those very actions that keep their a$$es from being grass...

Back in a sec, puff puff...

I hope the pacifists realize the US is the ONLY place on the planet where they can not only FREELY spew their convoluted phlegm, but they are PROTECTED as well.

If the US falls, which it will not, where will they go to protest!

Their freedoms are at stake as well.

Let's remind these pacifists of the proper role of military or police intervention.

This is a quote from a speech by John Piper (Desiring God Ministries at www.desiringgod.org).

God wills that human justice hold sway among governments, and between citizens and civil authority. He does not prescribe that governments always turn the other cheek. The government “does not bear the sword for nothing.” Police have the God-given right to use force to restrain evil and bring law-breakers to justice. And legitimate states have the God-given right to restrain life-threatening aggression and bring criminals to justice. If these truths are known, this God-ordained exercise of divine prerogative would glorify the justice of God who mercifully ordains that the flood of sin and misery be restrained in the earth.

Also in reference, check out Romans 13:1-4.

You'd have to pull his head out, first. He's had it rammed up there pretty firmly for many a year, now.

"There are three levels to those seeking to disarm us: ...DEEPLY RELIGIOUS, mainly Bhuddist and Catholic.
Let's not forget to sneak in a wack at those bad, bad Catholics."

Nope, it ain't just the Cath'lics with this judgmental streak, dude... Don't forget Falwell. I myself know a number of RR Protestants who're echoing the same sentiments (though not condemning violent retaliation, however...)

If all the blood that was ever spilt in the name of freedom were really for that purpose then the world would be a much better place.

That's right - we're trying to prevent it from happening again. Is that too hard to comprehend?

Instead of crying you should have told Father/deacon that he is not presenting a balanced view of the Catholic doctrine of war. Phone them now, and say you are not pleased.

One man, so angry his voice trembled, talked of losing a friend at the WTC and how could the Catholic church NOT support going after these terrorists?

Especially since we have been in a religious war for the past twenty years. For many baby boomers the Church has become irrelevant anyway.

We should round them up in a field and bomb the bastards.

Oh, that's brave...picking on people who won't fight back.

Good for you HG, make 'em cry. Nothin' wrong with cryin'. Cleans out the eyes.

I guess the reason I haven't come across much pro/anti war talk in religious circles is that basically the only time I do that stuff is Sunday morning service, and that only if I get up on time... [hangs head in shame] Oh well, from what y'all are telling me, I think I might go on honoring the Almighty's day of rest as per usual...
