Sorry this turned out to be so long. I hope that it helps people start to get prepared for whatever life may bring us.

This is a good idea and I would like to do it but I have not eaten a *can* of anything in years. We eat fresh meat and fresh vegetables. I keep a couple of cans of chili for my husband when he must eat something quick but as for myself, no. We used to kill our own beef and had a freezer full but we don't do that any more. Emergencies here on the Gulf Coast usually include the electricity being off for days at a time so meat in the freezer is not a good idea.

Utah Girl,

Do any LDS have a long list of what to have on hand. Sort of a checkoff list?

I am fortunate that there is ample water in nearby springs. Water is the most essential thing.

I have a lot of things on this list although it is good to go over for other things I might have forgotten.

I have ample supplies of beans, rice, salt, flour, sugar and spices. The only thing I hadn't thought of was canned meat. The rice and beans need meat for flavoring.

Everyone should have a .22 rifle and pistol especially since .22 ammo is so cheap and easily stored in large quantities. Also multi vitamins which you can keep fresh by taking them first in first used.

I have an old professor who really has a set up. Large quantities of everything he might need including diesel fuel. Everything he has runs on it including his car.

Outstanding information, if you're ever in the DFW area be sure to stop by the temple in North Dallas.

Ammo is much easier to store than all of that stuff.

Zip Lock bags, especially the stronger freezer bags, make a great emergency water container. You can fill them and stack them anywhere like sand bags. When you want to use it, just snip off a corner and you have a spout, or open the zipper if you want to reuse them.

We have just come across your 2001 information on 72 hour packs and food storage. As a family of 6 it seemed such a daunting task to start to gather the much needed essentials.
Thankyou for the best way I’ve seen to get there!!
We live in England and have had so much rain ( even for us!!!) that some parts of our country looked a lot like New Orleans sadly did not too many months ago. It has brought home to us that as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Later Day Saints, we should do as the Profit says and be prepared for the trials of life.
Thankyou for your help in this and good luck for all of your endeavors.

Good list. I’ve been mulling over preparedness a lot lately. Will you please add me to the ping list?

We might really have to do this if things continue the way they are.

Don’t forget to stock up on ammo too!

Bump into 2009. Every family/individual, regardless of situation, should have at the least 72 hour (3 day) emergency preparedness supplies.

This is a crucial BASIC concept recommended and taught by the American Red Cross and the Dept of Homeland Security, and a given for responsible inhabitants of hurricane zones!

search of "72 hour preparedness" leads to a wealth of information, such as http://members.tripod.com/laugh_lines/activitease/72.htm , http://www.mormonshare.com/relief-society/72-hour-kits.php , and http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2248253/posts .

thanks again, Utah Girl.
