There are a few little things wrong with that scenario:

First (see the article below), we already have troops on the ground in Pakistan and there will be a lot more behind them.

Second, have you ever seen what a fully loaded B52 can do? We're talking a few tactical nuke rockets to clear a path 10 miles down the road. Then, it spits out a few cruse missiles that can be real crowd pleasers. Then, the carpet bombing starts. One B52 could make a hell of a mess of our whole east coast. Send five to Pakistan (which is about the size of Texas) and they will soften them up within a couple hours.

That country has nothing to fight back with except a few of our old Stingers and a lot of AK-47s. We would not want to try to hold it because the people are well adapt at hiding in the mountains and fighting from there.

On the other hand, we do not want to harm all of the people. We would be targeting the government and three or four thousand in the terrorist group. And, unless they scatter, that's easy. It's not "if" we can do it, but "how excessive" we want to get with the weapons.

Our fighter planes have some cute little rockets that will take out the little valleys they like to hide in within a second. Our snipers will devastate their people, who just have AK-47s.

All they have in their favor are the hills.

US special forces 'land in Pakistan'
(09/16/2001) (Agencies)

Newspapers in Pakistan say foreign troops have already arrived in the country.

The Nation reports a special plane carrying over two dozen foreigners landed at the Chakala airbase.

The News quotes an eyewitness as saying he saw a small contingent of US troops landing in Islamabad. There is no official confirmation of the reports.

The paper says, according to unofficial reports, over 50 personnel from the Special Services Group of the US Marines' Green Seals have landed.

It adds they plan to conduct 'target-oriented' operations against Osama bin Laden, prime suspect behind the terrorist strikes in the US.

Diplomatic sources have confirmed the arrival of two American aircraft but refused to give further details, the Press Trust Of India reports.

The Pakistani Army has taken over Karachi airport and has increased its presence at other airports in the area, according to media reports.

It's unclear whether the army takeover is in preparation for a strike against neighbouring Afghanistan.

Pakistan is under intense pressure from both the US and Afghanistan's Taliban regime following Tuesday's terrorist attack.

"Arab terrorists started the war. We shall end it. And, in the process, one message will become strikingly clear to everyone in the world: Americans love their Liberty and are willing to kill anyone who violates it.
Really, there is nothing else they need know."

This really is all that need be said as far as I'm concerned.
Now...let our military people, under the direction of our POTUS & their Commander & Chief do their jobs.

I agree with your analysis. The US has no capability to wage another Gulf War-size operation. There will be no D-Day style amphib invasion of Iran or even through southern Iraq via Kuwait. Invading Pakistan would be even more suicidal. Therefore, the US needs to continue to put maximum pressure on Pakistan and play upon the newly developed military tensions between Pakistan and the Taleban to get the Paks to switch sides against the Taleban. We can also pledge to remove all existing international sanctions against them and perhaps even resume the sale of US arms immediately following their agreement to allow the passage of US ground forces through Pakistan and the use of nearby bases.

We can then get them to either allow the passage of medium scale ground troops and special forces either to use as hit teams to assasinate terrorist leaders, arm and train the 15,000 remaining Northern Alliance forces holed up in the far corner of northeastern Afghanistan or else mount a 100,000 troop invasion necessary to storm Kabul and oust the Taleban. Then we can set up a US friendly government there so that we can coopt the native population in the hunt for Bin Laden, which will most definitively be a long-term undertaking as he moves from cave to cave. The use of tacnukes remain a last resort.
