Pakistan supports the Taliban, who see themselves not as part of a distinctive Afgan state so much as a cornerstone of pan-Islamic alliance. In fact the main opposition group in Afghanistan are fighting to preserve a distinctively Afgan state. As for Pakistan, it's in an arms race with India, where nationalists recently took control through elections. India detonated nuclear devices and Pakistan followed along, but the devices were small and they have no effective delivery vehicles -- ie these were tests to save face and preserve national pride but they weren't part of on ongoing and successful program in the development of a credible nuclear threat. Maybe before you float breezy suggestions about nuclear war you might want to check up on some basic facts.

The Chinese communist media announced that Jiang Zemin and Bush talked on the phone. This news was from the communists. They spun it saying China was ready to join the US and fight terrosim through UN cooperation.

But I think this conversation must have been related to Afghanistan action that is planned.

Also, Bush had better have told Jiang that any more help to Pakistan, Iraq, Iran, Libya and other regimes allied with this form of terrorism would be unacceptable.

China's help for Pakistan's nukes has already come in to play big time given the military operation that will take place in Afghanistan.

China is peripherally allied with this new axis and they must decide whose side they are on now.

This goes for every nation.

The Taliban are "on board" if you're willing to take announcements at face value. On of the foreign ministers said that if the US can provide evidence of Bin Laden's involvment they were proceed to extradite him.

He says he wasn't involved, but he's pleased with the outcome anyways. Depending on what the meaning of "involved" is, he might even be telling the truth. He knows his communications are being monitorered and the Taliban claim that he's not being allowed to operate freely. Operating in loose cells with minimal exchange of information between them is their best bet. It makes it harder to compromise the organization. Maybe Omar provides money and loose direction and cells freelance. Before someone goes balistic, I'm not arguing for diminished responsibility. Just pointing out that, if it's a question about command and control, it would be niave to think it's all originating from a single source.
