Forced down by Royal Canadian AF and USAF in WhiteHorse Yukon - east of Alaska, north of me in WA state. Transponder apparently alerted ground to hijack on-going.

Supposing this is real, one wonders if the hijackers will be taken alive. If so, one also wonders if torture is morally justified at a time like this, in hopes of getting information.

Passenger jet diverted to Whitehorse: RCMP

A Korean Air plane, suspected of being hijacked, lands at the Whitehorse Airport just before noon Tuesday Septermber 11, 2001. The plane was escorted to the ground by military jets. - CP

WHITEHORSE (CP) -- A Korean passenger plane was escorted by U.S. military aircraft and forced to land at the airport here after concerns it may have been hijacked.

"It was escorted in such a fashion because there was communications on the plane that would suggest that it could possibly be a hijacked aircaft," said Cpl. Al Lucier, of RCMP in Whitehorse.

Canadian military planes also took part in the escort.

About 10 aircraft were expected to be diverted to the airport Tuesday, part of the efforts to clear the skies over the United States as that country struggled to grapple with several hijackings and terrorist attacks.

Lucier said schools in the area were evacuated, as well as government facilities.

"What we were considering was the possibility of that aircraft coming down somewhere other than the airport," Lucier said.

"The airplane has successfully landed here and has been taken to an area on the tarmac where we can now deal with the situation at hand."

A second Korean aircraft, a cargo plane, landed at the airport just before the 747, but that one didn't prompt concern from officials, Lucier said.

Controlled landing seems to indicate crew regained control from terrorists...

If any are captured alive I have no doubt that these terrorists will never hear their 'miranda' rights.

Torture is never justified for one very important reason: it doesn't work. Torture victims tell their torturers what they WANT to hear (as best as the victim can figure out), not the truth. IF these people are connected (a sizable if), they'd just "confirm" our favorite rumours (Bin Laden) if tortured. Not the kind of "info" we need. We all have to calm down. I see a lot of folks talking about immediate retaliation, retaliation against who? We know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about who the terrorists are or where they're from, striking out blindly at the "terrorist nations" reduces us to their level. Obviously we need to increase our anti-terrorist activities around the world, these organization cannot be suffered to live; but we can't just start bombing the crap out of the mideast.

KAL doesn't fit the M.O. and symbolic statement of using American/United airplanes.

WRONG!

Afghanastan has given asylum to Bin Laden. Maybe he's NOT responsible... who cares? He's capable and willing to do this kind of thing. He NEEDS to be eliminated. PERIOD. Any country that would give safe refuge to people like this NEED TO BE PUNISHED.

Why wait until Bin Laden successfully pulls off a mission? WHY?

FURTHERMORE, Syria and Libya have given financial support to the PDLF who takes responsibility for this... they should be punished, too. Our response must be total and violent. We must show that we can give it out MUCH, MUCH worse then they can. That is a TRUE deterent.
