"Birds And The Bees" education for Daughter, FReeper Help Requested
Posted on 09/09/2001 8:13:51 AM PDT by Buffalo Bob
We are seeking suggestions and/or links to materials to help us educate our 9 yr old daughter on the Birds and the Bees. We raise her with Christian principles and involvement. She is a bright, happy child and we think it's time to begin speaking about this subject to her.
Neither of our parents did this for us, so of course we learned from "the culture". Thank you in advance for any help/ideas/links you can share on this subject.

Wish I had some advice for you, but I don't. All I can say for sure is that you must get a hold on the situation before the public school system does.

I raised 5 daughters. They all have healthy viewpoints regarding sex.
When my older daughter who is now 32 and has a son aged 8, was at the birds and bees point, I bought her a book.
It wasn't technical, it wasn't graphic and it was illustrated for a child. It was also kind of silly.
Well, my daughters always have ribbed and kidded me about that book. But now, it turns out that the book is not only still in print, it is rated one of the two best books of it's kind. The name of the book is " How Babies Are Made".
In fact, when my grandson told my daughter " I know I was in your belly, but how did I get there?" She went researching books and she was shocked and very suprised to find the book she had been teasing me about for years was the one most recommended and the one she ended up buying! (I had this last laugh in this one!)
Also, it is easy on Mom & Dad. Good Luck

They will ask when they want to know, answer without alot of detail, matter of fact and don't get ahead of them. One time my five year old daughter asked about babies being made and how they got from the dad''s belly button to the mom's. I gave her a detailed long explanation. After I got thru, she said"you never told me how they got from the dad's belly button to the mom's." Now I might just say that sounds really nice, it just happens.

Is that the one that talks about the sneeze? LMAO I remember that book!

not sure, it has a picture of two chickens under the covers, I remember that.
My daughter lives across the country from me, so I haven't seen it recently. But it was funny and has remained a family joke!

I dunno, but evidently the process involves oxytocin and possibly voles. Not sure yet.

Answer any question honestly...when sex begins to get mentioned distiguish between what "culture" tells them and what the bible tells them. I've told my 14 and 12 year old that sex is a normal, beautiful gift that God gave a husband and wife, but culture perverts it and makes it ugly. Abuse of any good thing can always make it ugly.

There's a PBS show from the NOVA series called "Miracle of Life".
It's incredible!
If you do a search on the title at
Google, I'm sure you can find places to purchase it.

The one I am thinking of say its kinda like you have to sneeze real bad and can't but then you do and it feels real good. lol I think you would remember that. It was one of the best. Written for a child to understand. I think it went just a little to far with the sneeze thing though. lol

Call 800 information and ask for Free Spirit Publishing. they are a mail order cat. They have a web site I think? Anyway, they have many great books dealing with this issue. Written for adults and children. Good luck... I would start with where babies come from and go from there...

B-Bob, I used a peanut in the shell when I gave this talk to my son decades ago. I alos used the same prop when explainign to the sixth grade class I taught in Fairfax, Virginia. The syllogistic flow goes something like this:
Give the child a peanut still in the shell: explain that a tiny speck of a male and a tiny speck of a female meet to create a new third tiny speck that is the new life; explain that this is sexual reproduction, where male and female combine to form new life; if you wish (depending on the age of the child), explain that the new life is sheltered in a womb, inside the mommy's body; have the child carefully break open the peanut shell, to find the kernal within; separate the halves of the kernel and point out the tiny little peanut plant at one end; the analogy is that the shell is the same as the mommy's tummy, the kernel is the same as the protective, nourishing sac in which the baby grows, and the tiny little peanut plant is the child in earliest form of its individual life in its body; if the child is old enough (not necessarily an age thing), you might want to describe the delivery systems of the male and female that deliver the tiny parts for the union to make the new life.
Something must have clicked because my son and my daughter-in-law have now produced the most beautiful peanut, er, I mean granddaughter you will ever see!
