Here's WHY Someone's Spooked!
Anti-Capitalist Convergence: Sept 28 - Oct 1 2001 - D.C. ^ | Sept 8 2001 | "Human Debris"

Posted on 09/08/2001 10:48:32 AM PDT by Senator Pardek

Principles of Unity

(These are as adapted from CLAC and CASA's principles of unity. Two groups that organized for the FTAA protests in Quebec City.)

*We are opposed to capitalism. We fundamentally reject a social and economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and exchange. We reject a system driven by an exploitative logic that sees human beings as human capital, ecosystems as natural resources, and culture as simply a commodity. We reject the idea that the world is only valuable in terms of profit, competition and efficiency.

*We reject the ideology of neo-liberalism, whereby corporations and investors are exempt from all political and social measures that interfere with their so-called "success".

*We are anti-imperialist, opposed to patriarchy, and denounces all forms of exploitation and oppression. We assert a worldview based on the respect of our differences and the autonomy of groups, individuals and peoples. Our objective is to globalize our networks of resistance to corporate rule.

*Respecting a diversity of tactics, we support the use of a variety of creative initiatives, ranging between popular education to direct action.

*We are autonomous, decentralized and non-hierarchical. We encourage the involvement of anyone who accepts this statement of principles. We also encourage the participation of all individuals in working groups, in accord with their respective political affiliations.

*We organize with a regard for security culture, keeping in mind the constant repression and infiltration of political movements by the state. CoNeVeRgEnCe!

I'm spooked, too. Why? Because many here at FR align themselves with these lifeforms.

Like, say, the oppression of subject-verb-object agreement.

A sophomoric creed. They reject, resist, oppose, and denounce, yet offer no viable alternatives, just meaningless platitudes. I am not spooked by morons.

Oh, they have an alternative to capitalism. It's found in the Communist Manifesto.

Because many here at FR align themselves with these lifeforms.

A friend of mine once argued that the political spectrum is best understood not as a straight line, but as an ellipse. Once you reach the very far right fringe you have landed smack next to the very far left fringe.

It's also interesting to note the similarities between (say) the rethoric of Al Sharpton and Pat Buchanan. Both attempt to represent sections of the population which feel angry, disenfranchised and cheated. Populists like them then offer relief by blaming the economic and social standing of their followers on greedy capitalism, imports, corporations, immigrants and whatever else they can come up with.

Calling on of them a left-wing popoulist and the other one a right-wing populist really doesn't make much sense. Other than small differences in their message and the skin-colour of their audiences, the two are the same.

Great points. I've been flamed a number of times for saying this, but here it goes again:

Q. What's the difference between a Populist and a Socialist?
A. A Populist goes to church every once in awhile.

Nice Assessment!

Irrespective the "Message," these "Hyperventilators" think the "Ship of State" is an "Indycar," capable of rapid & seamless (Read: "No 'Train Wreck'") change of direction.

Their "Goals" are Fuzzy, & their "Assumption Models" are flawed.

I believe they are mostly spoiled, ignorant children--& clever demagogues who are taking advantage of same!

Perhaps, only a society as affluent & comfortable as ours (I include Western Europe etc, ) could "Spawn" a movement of such power & Ignorance.

Maybe we should Re-read "The Fall of the Roman Empire,"--we NEED to hear the lessons of the Past!

I have always been confused as to where the Anarchists are. Are they ultra conservatives who take the concept of less government to the point of no government, or ultra liberals who view all corporate, social, governmental, and religious orginizations as evil?

I think they'll be dangerous until about half way through their Junior year. Then they'll have to start thinking about getting a job unless daddy want's to pay for Law School.

Opposition to Capitalism persists until someone accomplishes something or earn enough money to own something. It's a relic of childhood, physical or emotional

It's easy to spew this kind of nonsense when you live in a society that owes its very existence to the things these @ssholes are so strongly opposed to. If they had been around when the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, every North American of European descent would today be living with 100 yards of the place where the ship landed.

The 2d representation offered by the Libertarian Party is not totally accurate, but it's probably an improvement over a straight line. Even many individual policy issues, however, cannot be represented by a straight line. For example, Martin Luther King's "I have a dream" vision of racial equality does not, IMHO, fall between those of the KKK or Jesse Jackson, but instead falls entirely outside that spectrum. Too bad more people (of any race) aren't willing to heed King's vision since it's just about the only vision out there that isn't racist.

This sophomoric creed is THE DEMOCRAT MANTRA!! What do you expect from children who have been raised by the liberals.

Anarchists -- and this is a bit of a generalization, because there are "primitivist" types all the way to "techno-anarchists" -- believe that all concentrations of power are illegitemate unless based upon, and/or accountable to, those affected by that power. Thus current govts are out of the picture. likewise with power based upon property.

Now what to do about this runs the gamut of possibilities, and various people who call themselves "anarchists" will diverge tremendously here. For one of my favorite examples, see Zellig Harris's "the transformation of capitalist society". Its not revolutionary -- he really just makes an argument for where he thinks capitalism is going.

Allow me an attempt to summarize: "Poverty is good. Human misery is the way to go. We are pro-suffering, and are bullish on starvation and disease."

Yes, I agree that they possibly do think they have a better plan, but by vandalising Starbuck's or MacDonalds they also destroy any hope of their movement's gaining any further support. Just a bunch of adolescents throwing a temper tantrum. They will mature, eventually.
