Senior United Nations officials, expressing regret and disappointment over the withdrawal by the United States and Israel from the World Conference against Racism in Durban, South Africa, have urged countries to continue their search for a successful global plan to fight discrimination.
Secretary-General Kofi Annan was "disappointed at the decision by Israel and the United States to withdraw their delegations from these intense negotiations, which, he is convinced, with continued goodwill, can conclude successfully by the end of this week," said a statement issued yesterday by Mr. Annan's spokesman.
"It is tough going, but he urges all countries to stay the course," the statement said. "The Conference cannot afford other defections."
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, the Conference Secretary-General, said Monday she truly regretted the US decision to leave the Conference. She noted that the texts already adopted during the preparatory process and at the Conference were constructive and that on three groups of difficult issues - claims relating to past injustices, the situation in the Middle East, and recital of grounds of discrimination - "serious informal processes" were under way.
"Countless people around the world have placed high hopes on this Conference," she said. "We owe it to them to work until the very last minute to have at the end of our meeting a ringing endorsement of tolerance and respect for human dignity."
Meanwhile as the Conference debate continued over the weekend, several developing countries told the meeting that the problems facing their nations, including widespread poverty and underdevelopment, stemmed in part from slavery and colonialism. A number of particpants insisted that racial prejudice was responsible for the diminished economic activity in their countries and that such wrongs could only be righted if the oppressing countries clearly acknowledged the past and established compensation schemes.
Other high-ranking government officials touched on several additional issues, such as modern forms of intolerance as xenophobia aimed at migrant workers, the racism of sanctions, the situation between Israel and Palestine, the right to decent employment, the importance of education and the role of the Internet. On Sunday, Mrs. Robinson and the Executive Director of the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), Carol Bellamy, said that young people must have their place in the emerging global alliance against racism and discrimination.
"Starting here in Durban, and continuing in New York later this month, we have a golden opportunity to put children at the centre of the global agenda," Ms. Bellamy said upon receiving the report of the Youth Summit. "We must change the world not only for children, but with children."
The results of the Youth Summit, held on 26 and 27 August in Durban, South Africa, will be sent to the UN special session on children, to be held in New York from 19 to 21 September, the first time ever that the General Assembly will focus exclusively on issues facing children and young people.
There is no "good will" at all at this phoney-baloney conference.
I mean literally, not just in the way that New York Times pieces tend to be.
Where in the world did they get this particular idea????? Who has a "right" to employment!
I just cannot understand how the grandchildren of people who died until in the gas chambers of NAZI Germany and who's supposed rallying cry is "NEVER AGAIN!!" can advocate gun control to include registration and confiscation. Why "Never Again?" because the Israeli's have vowed to never surrender their firearms again....but their American bretheren seem to disagree.
The term "liberal Jew" is an oxymoron. One cannot be truly Jewish, i.e., internalize Jewish values, and yet be a liberal.
I just cannot understand how the grandchildren of people who died until in the gas chambers of NAZI Germany and who's supposed rallying cry is "NEVER AGAIN!!" can advocate gun control to include registration and confiscation.
Slow down, ExSoldier. "Never Again" was the rallying cry of Rabbi Kahane (OBM) founder of the JDL, an Orthodox Jewish Rabbi who was despised by the secular "Jewish" leftist establishment.
Why "Never Again?" because the Israeli's have vowed to never surrender their firearms again....but their American bretheren seem to disagree.
Not quite. "Never Again" referred to the Holocaust as in, Never Again will Jews be so complacent. With all due respect to Rabbi Kahane, this was a foolish assumption.
I went to one of those symposiums ten years ago that hosted a Holocaust Survivor. He told his gripping tale and then came the question and answer session. There sat I front row and centered on the podium. I asked the following questions: #1 "When they came for you initially, why didn't you resist? Why didn't you take up arms? ANSWER: "Oh, the Nazis passed gun control laws YEARS before they put the first one of un on a cattle car to a Death Camp!" #2 "Have you been to Israel lately?" ANSWER: "It is my HOME." #3 And tell me, what is the incidence of personal firearms ownership in Israel?" ANSWER: "EVERYONE is ARMED" then he slams his fist down on the podium and screams: "NEVER AGAIN!" Whereupon I whirled and addressed the 500 or more educators present and told them ALL (without benefit of a microphone) this: "Do you see the nexus? Do you understand the connection between ownership of GUNS and FREEDOM? If you now do not return to your students and tell them this...you not only condone the first Holocaust, you invite the Second!" NOT ONE PERSON WOULD MEET MY EYES.
Suddenly the survivor realized he was in the midst of a bunch of gun haters. At the coffee later, he only wanted to talk guns with me. Anytime somebody else approached he would snarl at them. LOL. He told me I was going to be in trouble...and of course he was right. But once you've been chewed on by a GENERAL like I have; a principal just ain't gonna make the grade, so to speak. I was banned from the symposium for ten years after my principal chewed me out. Last year I was invited back. Guess who was in charge? A delegation from Israel.
I'm still in education (all efforts to the contrary); even thriving (former social studies teacher of the year at the high school where I teach) because I SHOW all sides; meaning I discuss ISSUES rather than ONE SIDE which is THE AGENDA.
War is Peace. Slavery is Freedom. Kofi Annan speaks the Truth.
