Pete Hegseth is increasingly looking like he may take the fall for Republicans’ midterm losses, despite Donald Trump’s vocal support for his defense secretary, even calling him a champion of war.
The war in Iran, which voters and Trump have named as a key reason for Republicans’ midterm losses, “has been primarily a Department of War-led effort because you chose to take military action to resolve a foreign policy matter”, a former senior Pentagon official told CNN.
“If the president is serious about anyone taking responsibility for it, it’s Pete Hegseth,” one Republican close to the White House added in an interview with CNN. “Pete has been either dishonest or incorrect – neither of which are acceptable – about timelines, goals and objectives since the beginning.”
On Wednesday, JD Vance publicly questioned whether the Iran war was worth it and said it cost Republicans control of Congress.

Which would be a huge promotion.

And we sure have negotiated that threat away, after how many years, haven’t we?
I wouldn’t support this. The Secretary you get will definitely not be MAGA. The team you currently have is the best team you’re gonna have. Everyone else has to go through a Democrat Senate. It will get worse. Stay loyal to those who are loyal to you.
If President Trump was given incorrect information and timelines and was assured the Iran conflict would be wrapped up well before the midterms, is he just supposed to accept that?
I swear people on this site have very short memories. Trump ordered the Department of War to watch the elections and send in a report within a month or so.
Trump didn’t complete the sale of the war to the American people. It isn’t Hegseth’s fault it wasn’t sold. It was Trump’s fault. He should own up to it.
The day after the loss, Trump talks about his ballroom. I wish someone would burn it down. A lot of volunteers spent a bunch of time this election cycle. Big, beautiful ballroom my hind end. At least give us the Epstein list.

I don’t think Trump gave Hegseth free rein to conduct the war and it seemed like Trump took the advice of Vance to listen to Pakistan and order a ceasefire.
But in true Trump fashion he would like to blame someone else and let Hegseth be the fall guy in order to please the Democrats and the media.
