Trump asking advisers if Hegseth should stay after midterm losses, sources say

Washington — President Trump has been asking advisers around him and on the phone whether Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth should stay in his job, following Republicans' catastrophic losses Tuesday night, multiple sources familiar with the matter tell CBS News.

Some White House aides have predicted some of the blame for GOP midterm losses will be trained on Adm. Brad Cooper, the head of U.S. Central Command, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Dan Caine, who both played big roles in guidance on the Iran war.

Still, other sources said the president hasn't decided to replace Hegseth. Before the election, Democrats were already trying to impeach Hegseth, and the likelihood of an impeachment effort could increase with Democrats holding strong majorities in both chambers.

Vice President JD Vance is blaming the war for the GOP defeat. "The reason we lost is the war," he said in a lengthy post on X Wednesday morning.

IMO, scrapping old but dedicated minesweepers already in Bahrain in favor of Littoral Combat Ships was a really bad move.

War Secretary.

HR 1 of the next Congress will return every name Trump changed to what it was before, or what the Democrats want it to be; the first of many sticks in Trump's eye.

I’m genuinely surprised Hegseth lasted beyond August 1st.

Seems like a wide variety of interests are all trying to eliminate the "threat".

May God Bless our Secretary of War!

President Trump should keep Hegseth, because he won't get any of his choices through the next Senate. He might as well keep what he has now, because any change in the future won't be for the better.

I think he’s already made up his mind to dump Hegseth. He’s just looking for people to tell him it’s a good idea

Trump is ending Jimmy Carter’s 47 year war just in time to prevent a nuclear holocaust. It would be foolish to treat this as a mistake just because leftist media says so.

In my opinion, the only mistake was not educating the public better.

Good old anonymous “sources familiar with the matter.”

Are these sources in the room with you now?

IMHO, every single member of the cabinet and White House should be evaluated. A loss like this is going to require a big arse shift in strategy. Start with this, no more “yes men.” This guy needs to hear the hard medicine.

Yes, he bumbled into this without considering the politics. He had to explain this to the American People.

DJT botched the war. One could argue if it was a good idea or necessary. I initially though WTF but did agree Iran needed to be dealt with. They should have been dealt with years ago. But after he decided to go to war, he apparently got bored and didn’t want to see it thru. Iran was being crushed.....then suddenly a cease-fire, he lets them up off the mat to regroup & rearm. Then empty threat after empty threat after empty threat. How many time did he threaten Armageddon only to cancel a supposedly scheduled attack at the last hour? Then that MOU nonsense where Trump seemed to be desperate for any ‘deal’. Does he actually believe any agreement with these people would be worth the paper it’s printed on? If so, he’s a fool. Actually he’s made a complete fool of himself. They’ve been laughing at him.
