A 23-year-old student at UC Berkeley was detained by immigration enforcement agents at SFO and transferred to one of the most “inhumane” ICE facilities in the country, her lawyer told SFGATE on Tuesday.
Paula Valentina Albornoz Hernandez, who came to the U.S. from Colombia and applied for asylum to escape gender-based violence, was traveling to Portland, Oregon, when ICE agents detained her without a warrant Friday night, Centro Legal de la Raza lawyer Nikolas De Bremaeker said. Though Hernandez overstayed her visa, she was already issued a work permit, and her asylum application was still pending, he continued.
“It is devastating,” De Bremaeker said. “It shocks the conscience.”
Described by her lawyer as an exceptional student, Hernandez quickly received her GED diploma upon arrival in the U.S., where she earned several awards at San Jose City College before transferring to one of the most competitive programs in the country at UC Berkeley. On Monday, the school’s chancellor’s office issued a campuswide email addressing her detainment and said the university is maintaining contact with Hernandez’s family while mobilizing legal support.
*** Now, Hernandez is being held at California City Detention Facility in the eastern California desert, which De Bremaeker describes as one of the worst ICE facilities in the nation.
“It is horrifying,” he said.
“I’ve been to many of our detention centers in the country, and that one certainly stands out as a dark page in our nation’s history,” he told SFGATE. “It’s a detention center that looks like a concentration camp in every way.”

My conscience remains unshocked
Given how many immigrants and illegals are here from places like her homeland, this really is not the place to go to to “escape gender-based violence”
“applied for asylum to escape gender-based violence”
Columbia’s laws do not allow that. There is functioning law enforcement in the country.
Request denied.
A he-she huh?
No one is above the law .
Oh, boo-hoo....
Get out of my country@
A student at Berserkley but not smart enough to understand that a work permit does not negate the fact she overstayed her visa and is therefore here illegally.
Ship her dernière back to Columbia !!!
I've been to the Dachau and Flossenburg concentration camps in Germany. I saw no similarities to the detention center, although there may be a similarity to the Japanese detention centers during WWII.
Dachau was the most sobering place I've ever visited, a sense of evil pervades the place.
Three FREE hots and a cot. Paula will survive.
As a former immigrant, I voted for this. I was very cognizant of minding my ps and qs for everything immigration related.
GET THEM OUT!
Legal Center of the Race ..
“Though Hernandez overstayed her visa,”
At last a clue to what could have lead to this whole situation!
So, work permit is bigger than visa overstay?
“I’ve been to many of our detention centers in the country, and that one certainly stands out as a dark page in our nation’s history,” he told SFGATE. “It’s a detention center that looks like a concentration camp in every way.”
So this douche nozzle is not only ignorant he also has no qualms about minimizing the real suffering of those who truly were in the concentration camps.
ANYONE KNOW EXACTLY WHERE???
SMART ENOUGH FOR COLLEGE??? BUT “OVERSTAYS HER VISA”??
BOO HOO
