Virginia and DC sue to stop Trump’s arch as government looks to start construction

The legal challenges to Donald Trump’s proposed memorial arch are mounting, with the District of Columbia and Virginia suing in federal court on Saturday as the administration says construction could begin as early as next week.

There are now three lawsuits calling for a halt to potential work on a monument that would rise 250ft (76 meters) on a patch of grass off the bridge that spans the Potomac River, connecting the city with the Arlington national cemetery. That would make the arch 100ft taller (30 meters) than the Statue of Liberty is from its base to the top of the torch.

The US district judge Tanya Chutkan is already considering issuing an order to halt the project until the original lawsuit against the Trump administration by three Vietnam war veterans and an architectural historian is resolved. She held a hearing on Friday but did not immediately act, though she said she would move expeditiously.

In the latest lawsuit, two attorneys general, Brian Schwalb of Washington DC and Jay Jones of Virginia, argue that “as soon as defendants break ground on this project, they will inflict irreparable harm on both the District and Virginia. The arch site sits at the center of a major traffic artery between the District and Virginia, in the monumental core of the capital, on an island that straddles the Potomac River. During the three-year period of construction, the arch project will inevitably snarl traffic between the jurisdictions, produce pollution and storm water runoff in the Potomac, interfere with emergency services, and pose numerous other challenges.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Even among conservatives, there are not many fans of the Trump Arch.

I would have preferred if they used their time to stop daylight savings time.

One of the reasons why the Leftist city governments in Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor, MI where Tom Monaghan founded Domino’s Pizza is he wanted to expand the fledgling Ave Maria College into a larger university and law school, including a 250 foot statue of Mary. It was the symbol of their freezing him out (along with their anti-Catholic and anti-Christian in general prejudice. He moved to Florida and flourished with the university and the law school (where Antonin Scalia was once an adjutant staff professor of law).

If Trump’s goal with the Arch is to distract his opponents, well, okay. It’s working.

But if he’s serious about it, count me in the opposition. Gaudy triumphal arches are an empire thing. They are not a republic thing.

Look at all the things we, the people, wanted Congress never passed.

Voter ID as part of Save America.
End changeover of savings time.

Numbers in the 80% and up range for popularity but still no dice.

I might add put the criminals in the Dem Party in prison for their crimes (Brennan, Comey, the Obama crew, the Clinton crew....).

“...two attorneys general, Brian Schwalb of Washington DC and Jay Jones of Virginia...”

Isn’t Jay Jones the guy who wished death to a political opponent as well as his wife and children?

I haven’t read much on it, but I know I heard/read it’s supposed to be a high vantage point for security measures in the area. That may be good?

They could dedicate it in 2045 to commemorate 100 years since the last time America won a war.

And I am fine with that. Though some wrongly see it as hating Trump full course.

I flew out of DCA yesterday. The plane flew pretty close to the Washington Monument.

By the way, I lived in Rosslyn in 1979, when it was a middle-class suburb, with drugstores, markets, coffee shops, etc. before the high-rises arrived. When I returned in 2007, I didn't recognize it.

US President Donald Trump has said his proposed triumphal arch will double as a complex to store military equipment, complete with the ability to deploy snipers and drones.

In a Sunday morning post, Trump said he is updating the plans at the “strong request” of the US military and for “national security purposes”.

The “top grade” military complex and arch will “house, store, and have the rapid ability to use large numbers of drones, plus Snipers, on both the roof and plaza areas, and additionally have and hold large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage”, he said.

No kidding. It’s tinpot dictator stuff that has no place in the USA. The changing justifications for building it have also been amusing, if pathetic.

I can’t believe the FAA isn’t going to have a problem with a near 25 story tall structure in the path to Runway 15 unless DCA closes that runway.
