Brazilians are going to the polls on Sunday in a highly unpredictable runoff in which the leftist president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, is attempting an unprecedented comeback against the far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who won the first-round vote.
Bolsonaro’s surprise victory despite not leading most polls made him the favourite three weeks ago, but since then Lula’s campaign has gained ground, and the two go into the contest virtually tied.
The gap between them was the narrowest ever recorded in a first round, at less than 2% of the vote, and the 80-year-old president has spent much of the runoff campaign focused on turnout – abstention reached a record high in the first round and disproportionately affects his voters – and on stoking fears over what a return to power by a member of the Bolsonaro family could mean.
A congressman for more than 20 years with few bills passed, the 45-year-old Bolsonaro is the eldest son of the former president Jair Bolsonaro, who is under house arrest serving a 27-year sentence for attempting a coup to overturn his 2022 defeat to Lula.
“I think the time has come for real change,” said Bolsonaro after voting on Sunday morning at a school in Rio de Janeiro’s north zone. “Brazil can’t take another four years the way things are ... Everyone’s life has got worse.”
Lula voted in São Bernardo do Campo, the industrial city where his political career began nearly half a century ago, and said he had “never seen anything like” the leftist demonstrations – many emerging organically among young people – that swept the country in support of him during the runoff.

Of course the two candidates are described as left and far right. Anything to smear conservatives as extremist.
leftist vs FAR right
"Virtually tied," according to whom, and why? The leftist media are making room for the steal, trying to save their foothold in South America.
One wonders why Trump hasn't trotted out Delcy Rodríguez to explain how the Cartel del Sol / Smartmatic operation works. It would help him in the mid-terms.
Not to worry. Lula will just have Flávio arrested if he wins.
RE: “far-right” Bolsonaro
They don’t use the word “far” for Lula, but use it for Bolsonaro. Why is that?
Oh, it’s predictable. 🤔
Notice that Lula is just “leftist”, but Bolsinaro is “far right”. No bias there. The media (especially in Europe) never defines anyone as “far left”. We can’t despise the media enough.
The Guardian is scared!
And that is a good thing.
Which leg hurts? your left leg or you’re far right one?
If the son Bolsonaro wins, he gets to swap his dads jail cell and shove commie Lulu, who put him there, in the cell. Payback is a bitch.
When the left lost their USAID funding it made it harder to interfere in elections. We’ll see how it goes with Brazil.
“Conservative Party wins in British Columbia for first time in almost 100 years”
“The Conservative Party of Canada won a majority in the Canadian province of British Columbia, which hasn’t happened in almost 100 years, reports said on Sunday.
The conservatives won 64 of the 93 seats and the New Democrats won 27, according to Reuters.
The last time conservatives won there was 1928.
The party’s candidates vowed to double natural gas production by 2032. “
Forget it, Jake. It’s The Guardian.
The Guardian is repulsive.
Because the enemedia is directed and staffed by degenerate leftist filth.
” far-right Bolsonaro”
The Guardian -a global joke run by deluded leftist children. Somehow, I doubt Bolsonaro is far right at all. I do expect Lula to use his office to steal this just like last time.
Chuckle… “far-right” actually means normal… leftist is of course, communist sphincter boy.
Note the way the two are labelled. This is one subtle form of media bias. It treats the left as “normal” and anything to the right of it as some form of extremism.
Brazil will make it 8 out of 8.
The Guardian is so out of the closet that even avid murdering lying Muslims consider it to be a total pile of Obamastuff.
