Kaylub Giamanco woke up and got his kids ready for school that Thursday like it was any other day. The family made breakfast and packed lunches. He and his wife spent a little extra time dressing up their two girls because Oct. 15 was picture day at Silver Rail Elementary.
Giamanco dropped the girls off as usual, then the 36-year-old carpenter headed to a job site northeast of Bend. He had brought a packed lunch in his truck, but when afternoon came around, he decided to go home instead to eat leftover tacos with his wife. He thought about running some errands on the way, but decided against it. He was four blocks from their house when he turned on Brentwood Avenue, the road running along the south side of Silver Rail.
In an exclusive interview with OPB, Giamanco described the series of seemingly insignificant decisions that brought him to that intersection at 12:58 p.m. that day — the same time a 16-year-old carrying a shotgun approached his children’s school. It was the packed lunch he didn’t eat, the masonry shop where he didn’t stop, the bolts he needed but didn’t buy, and the gun he says had just been “collecting dust” in his truck console.

heartwrenching.

Article reeks of leftist bias, but what would you expect from an Oregon paper?
He should not give anymore interviews for a couple of months, if not longer. Those who want to know the story already know it by now. He doesn’t owe anything to the media.
That was a great post and a great story.
Thanks for posting. Good guy with a gun at a crucial time. Hero saving innocent life. Thanks to Kaylub Giamanco.
“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”
Thanks for posting this. And for all your years of contributions here.
TRUE
Giamanco -- “That’s when I started hearing children pleading for their lives...” -- how awful.
"...the teacher rose and sprinted from the classroom in fear." Giamanco looked down at the shooter. "He was scrambling for his weapon. I looked at him and I shot him two more times to make sure that he couldn’t move because I was afraid of him shooting anybody else.” YES! Well done, Mr. Giamanco!
Then the PBS finally kicks in: "Armed civilians stopping mass shooters is exceptionally rare. In 600 cases in the U.S. since 2000, it’s happened only a few dozen times. Experts who study mass shootings told OPB they were unaware if any of those had involved schools."
Dean Weingarten at his Ammoland has lots of stats on defensive shootings and there are many.
Check out the credits at the end of the article.
I think ten people are listed. For this short piece.
“Armed civilians stopping mass shooters is exceptionally rare. In 600 cases in the U.S. since 2000, it’s happened only a few dozen times. Experts who study mass shootings told OPB they were unaware if any of those had involved schools.“
1. I wonder why it is uncommon for an armed citizen to stop a mass shooting, and OPB doesn’t ask that question. Why? Because a majority of mass shootings take place in “gun free zones”. Criminals don’t obey laws.
2. “Experts” were unaware if any of those had involved stool shootings. Yes, that’s an expert… No bias there….
3. “It’s only happened a few dozen times”. And that is how many? 24 times? 36 times? 50 times? And what of those people who were saved? Are they meaningless?
4. I despise liberal/progressive/commie/pearl-clutching gun-grabbers!!!
Well it did this time. Would you have preferred more dead kids?
The hero is someone who sees the problem and solves it.
The Burden of the Western Man.
God bless the carpenter from Bend.
“By then, Giamanco could hear sirens. He went out of the classroom to look for the teacher who’d fled, then laid his gun on the ground and held up his hands as the first officer on the scene appeared, geared in body armor and wielding a rifle. Minutes had passed since he called 911 outside the school.”
He certainly did the right things afterwards. Smart.
The Bigger number perhaps would be when a Firearm is presented that stops the violence and Is Not Documented.
